Course days and Coaching Ride days
In 2014 we'll be running all courses for one day, in conjunction with WHEELBASE to provide focussed tuition and sessions on a whole range of skills. The following day is a coaching ride day, guided by an expert leader / coach (usually the same one) who will give tips and shoot video but all as part of a more flowing Lake District journey. It's the ideal way to consolidate all that you learned on day 1, a useful skills refresher, or a great stand-alone day if you prefer to mix more ride time into your tuition. On long weekends you can also combine two courses, if you feel ready for more rapid progression.
Core Skills Course (level 1)
This course teaches you the right skills in the right way - ideal for complete novices or those who are currently riding easier trails and want to progress to intermediate level mountain biking terrain. You'll learn about body position for riding on descents and technical climbs, how and when to control your speed, handle corners, pick lines, control direction and vision, and blaze through difficult terrain. The aim is to make you a confident and safe biker, equipped to hit the trails and have some fun.
Trail Skills Course (level 2)
To progress as a mountain biker you need to flow through trails with balance, control and the ability to move yourself and your bike around with confidence. This is where our mountain bike trail skills course comes in - as you learn to manual the front wheel over rocks and roots on descents, wheelie over steps on climbs, and develop your endo, rear wheel lift and start to link these moves together in real trail situations.
If you can stay on for the second day you'll be taken on a ride that lets you practice all of this and more, as you complete a superb loop and return to view your progress on screen at WHEELBASE after grabbing coffee and cake at Wilf's next door, of course!
Mountain Skills Course (level 3)
If you want to handle black graded trails and technical mountain routes with confidence, style and flow - this is the course for you. We look at all aspects of your riding as we tackle rocky descents, bunny hops, pumping for speed and control, advanced line choice, riding step ups and clearing extreme climbs. There are few places in the UK where you can challenge yourself like you can here, under the watchful eyes of some of the best coaches in the country.
The day 2 ride out, if you sign up for it, will be a mountain epic to test you, thrill you and let you enjoy your new skills in real riding situations. As with the course on day 1, the ride will include some video taking so we can review your new skills at the end of the day, and post footage of your progress to our YouTube and Facebook pages.
Private Tuition (any level)
Private coaching can have a huge impact on your biking in a very short space of time. We offer this service throughout the year to small groups and individuals who want to really focus in on their biking skills. Our instructors are the most highly qualified, experienced and widely respected you'll find, and their focussed attention will bring impressive results in a very short space of time. Email direct to email@example.com to plan your private day, or visit the private tuition page.
Our Lake District Trail Centre - WHEELBASE, Staveley
For 2014 we've again teamed up with Wheelbase to run all courses from their store and cycle centre in Staveley, in the south Lake District. With free parking, bike wash, the famous Wilf's Cafe next door and use of the shop video facilities for all of our coaching feedback, this is an ideal location for all of our mountain bike training needs.
The trails in this region are some of the best in The Lakes - the Kentmere Valley, Jenkins Crag, and the rocky descent rated as one of the top 3 in the UK - The Garburn Pass. There's everything from easy trails for novices to flowing singletrack to rocky slabs and loose, technical challenges. Whether we're running coaching sessions or heading out for rides, there's a huge choice on the doorstep.
Video Feedback and Online Review
On many of our courses we now use video to assist with your skills development. This is at the discretion of the instructor, as its use depends on where we are, the weather conditions and the requirements of the group.
If you wish we can load video content onto our YouTube or Facebook pages so that you can review online, get additional feedback or ideas from our full coaching team, and benefit from your course for many months afterwards. You can also load up your own videos for us to give feedback on as you improve after the course - that's all part of the service.
