A Lesson in sprinting - Chicci and a Cannondale Super Six!

Francesco Chicchi, Liquigas took stage four of the Tour of Qatar in an massive effort from the back of the bunch at full sprinting speed aboard his Cannondale Super Six Hi-Mod - watch the bottom left corner!

Eurosport coverage - Stage 5: Tour of Qatar

The Italian sprinter, despite not having a lead-out train, capitalised on the chaotic finale to emerge from the wheels of a two-man Omega Lotto train to snatch the win at the end of the 146km stage from The Pearl to Al Khor Corniche.

The crosswinds, which were expected to wreak havoc on today’s stage never materialised, meaning another big bunch gallop into Al Khor.

No one team was able to take control of the front of the race, despite attempts from Garmin, Saxo Bank, Milram and Cervélo to do so.

Chicchi is increasingly asserting himself at Liquigas, emerging from the shadow of his more established team-mate, Daniele Bennati. The unpredictability played into the hands of the Italian who used the Dutchman Theo Bos’ wheel to launch himself at the line.

Cervélo’s Heinrich Haussler was edged into second for the second time in succession, still trying to make amends for the team’s one-minute penalty in the opening team time trial.

Vaconsoleil’s Wouter Mol finished safely in the pack to retain the leader’s jersey, whilst Taylor Phinney produced another impressive result to finish seventh for the second consecutive day in Qatar.

Chicci dedicated his win to Franco Ballerini, the Italian national team director and former Paris-Roubaix winner who died on Sunday as a result of injuries sustained in a rally car crash.

The 2010 National Cyclo-Cross championships took place at the event’s spiritual home, Sutton Park in the West Midlands on Sunday 7/2. 99 Riders lined at 2.15pm for the start of the Senior Mens race, among them 5 riders from local Team WHEELBASE.co.uk/Cannondale eager to defend their title as 2008 and 2009 National Team Champions.

The race got off to a blistering start up a greasy tarmac climb before hitting a well-designed technical off-road course for one hour of high intensity action. After a full season contesting the National Trophy CycloCross rounds Staveley resident Rob Jebb, WHEELBASE.co.uk/Cannondale was poled at the front of the grid and battled on the first few laps with Dave Collins from Hope Racing with the two riders heading shoulder-to-shoulder into a tight section of singletrack, and with no rider wanting to give up ground they both collided with a nasty crash.

Jebb lay back in thirtieth position after the crash and managed to complete the remaining half of the course on a mangled bike before he could switch machines in the pits. On to a fresh bike Jebb put the hammer and dug deep with a massive effort to ride himself back to eleven position.

Lewis Craven, WHEELBASE.co.uk/Cannondale was uncertain about riding the Nationals as he was recovering from injury but decided to don his skin suit for the team. From the second line of the grid Craven had a great start coming around the first lap in eight placed but unfortunately his lack of fitness showed from two weeks not on the bike and after 20 minutes of racing he did not look comfortable and slipped back to seventieth, well down on his usual high standard.

Burneside rider Stuart Reid, WHEELBASE.co.uk/CANNONDALE was having a great ride starting back on the ninth row of the grid and rode himself up on to the wheel of Craven and helped the stricken team rider through his pain. Craven and Reid out sprinted their bunch to finish seventh and eightieth respectively.

The combined positions of Jebb, Craven and Reid were unfortunately not enough to retain their two year dominance of National CycloCross Team Championship and had to pass the accolade to Lancashire based Hope Racing, winning with a slender margin of just 5 points.

New TEAM WHEELBASE.co.uk/Cannondale riders Mike Cotty and brother James Cotty showed great potential for the future of the team, with Mike riding flat out and with impressive technical skill to come home in 24th on this first attempt on the National circuit. James Cotty also had a stirling ride holding off the pursuing bunch of lead riders to come home in 58th, one lap down.

TEAM WHEELBASE.co.uk/Cannondale now have a two month lull in racing before the all new 10 strong HerbaLife/WHEELBASE.co.uk team roll out on the National road racing circuit this year after attending two Spring training camps in Spain.

Rob Jebb will spend the Spring/Summer 2010 focussing on furthering his illustrious running career.

Team HerbaLife/WHEELBASE.co.uk will officially launch on the 28 February 2010. More information at www.TEAMHERBALIFEWHEELBASE.co.uRESULTS
