Cannondale Six Carbon 105 - 2010 Bike of the Year! Well deserved.

In one of the cycling industries major annual tests Cycling Plus magazine have named the Cannondale Six Carbon 105 as their Bike Of The Year for 2010. £1,799.

In a road bike shoot-out of 50 models every single bike was ridden by every member of the Cycling Plus’s 11-strong test team over varying terrain. The testers ranged from sponsored team racers to sportive riders and commuters and their views were then collated, with the aim of trimming the original list down to a top 10, then a top five and finally an overall winner!

The riders headed go out in groups, swapped bikes, then ride the same route on new bikes in order to compare them over the same steep climbs and sharp descents. The testers would then consult each other - which was the fastest, the most comfortable, had the best kit, the best wheels, was the lightest, the most stylish…etc. etc..

After many miles, and nearly as much arguing, they finally came to a decision as to which bike they thought would please most Cycling Plus readers - the UK’s most read road bike monthly magazine.

And the winner is? The 2010 Cannondale Six Carbon 105 £1,799 - a well deserved winner in our opinion.

Bike of the Year Test Winner: Cannondale Six Carbon 105

Verdict: “A sublime blend of speed and comfort - a great all-rounder”

Review extracts:

“Superb, nimble… beautifully balanced, handles confidently. You could race this or do a sportive on it.”

“It’s hard to ignore the fact that is offers a sublime ride quality at £700 less than its rivals.”

“Every single rider on the test only had praise for the Cannondale. Mightly impressive frame that combines a superbly damped and compliant ride with all the performance you could want.”

2010 Bike of the Year - Cannondale Six Carbon 105!

Cannondale marketing manager and Team WHEELBASE.co.uk ride Mike Cotty said: “After weeks of waiting, to hear that the Six had been elected Bike Of The Year was just incredible … Although there is little difference aesthetically between the 2009 and 2010 frame, our engineers worked hard to refine the materials and carbon layup schedule to reduce the weight by over 100g.

“That’s not an easy task when you also want to try to improve stiffness and comfort all at the same time. The road is the ultimate test bed and fortunately the sum of these improvements has been confirmed by Cycling Plus and their elite test team. The Six Carbon 105. Bike Of The Year. Sorry, I had to end like that. I’ve been dreaming of saying it for weeks!”

The Cicle Classic is now well established as Britain’s most unique, challenging and spectacular Elite single day cycle road race. Continental based riders compare it to the renowned “Paris - Roubaix”, but with hills reminiscent of the “Ronde van Vlaanderen”.

In just five years the race has gone from just another new domestic race within the Premier Calendar of British Cycling events, to an international race, targeted and coveted by competitors from throughout Europe and beyond, as the race that they all want to win.

Bikes of Paris-Roubaix 2010 - Pinarello KOBH 60.1 + Cervelo R3 + Synaspe

Paris-Roubaix or it’s more affectingly known as ‘Hell on the North’ proceeds spectacular racing - a 259km blast over the cobbled ‘Pave’ of Northern France.

The course is not only one of the most demanding on the Pro calendar for riders but also for equipment and each team has developed and refined their set up to cope with this brute of a route.

Double bar tape, 27c double walled tyres, traditionally laced wheels, taped up hands and jacked up cars are the order for every team but there a few teams that go one stage further and select bicycle frame specifically designed for both comfort and speed.

Pinarello KOBH 60.1 - Team Sky ProCycling

2010 Paris-Roubaix: Ridden to a third place by Juan Antonio Flecha

Click here to view the WHEELBASE Pinarello range

The KOBH 60.1 differs from the Dogma and all other Pinarello bikes with a new geometry developed expressly for the classic races of northern Europe. Dubbed CenturyRide, it is designed to provide more shock absorption and comfort thus delaying rider fatigue over long and rough courses.
The KOBH 60.1 achieves this without compromising its lateral stiffness which remains on par with that of the Dogma 60.1. This is accomplished by relaxing the seat and head tube angles, lengthening the head tube and increasing the fork rake. Wheel clearance has even been increased to accept 28mm tires.
The result is not only a bike that is optimal for races such as Paris-Roubaix but also one that offers increased comfort for riders seeking a more relaxed position on the bike.
Team Sky will have the new KOBH 60.1 bikes in action this weekend at the Paris-Roubaix while the bike will be offered to the public in two different versions, one that will accept any component groupset and a specific model with internal routing for the Shimano Di2 groupset. In Paris-Roubaix Team Sky used the multi-shifter benefits of Shimano Di2 and opted to mount a shift button on the top of the flat bar so gears can be selected while flying across the cobbles.

The mainstay of Cervelo’s Roubaix equipment is the R3 frameset. As always, Cervélo provides its riders with stock frames featuring standard geometry and carbon lay-ups identical to what the consumer can buy at its retailers. The only exception for Paris-Roubaix is the 1cm-longer chainstays to allow for more mud clearance.

“Since the R-series was introduced, Cervélo has reached the podium of Paris-Roubaix every year, including three victories for the R3″ Gerard Vroomen, Co-founder of Cervélo.

Granted the R3 has not got the areo look and massive downtube decal of the S3 but the R3 frameset is much smoother and more compliant and more suitable for the cobbled roads of Roubiax and also the majorty of ‘Weekend Warrior’ road cyclists. We currently have a 54cm RS demo bike is stock - come an experience the ride for yourself.

Inseparable - that was the result of the Cycling Development North West’s 78 mile road race around the tough Cumbrian roads near the market town of Kirkby  Lonsdale on Sunday. The rider/manager of Sigma Sport Specialized RT, Matt Stephens and Team Raleigh’s Mike Cuming crossed the line locked together after a hard fought battle according to CDNW’S judge, John Mallinson.

After an initial breakaway by Alistair Rutherford (Science in Sport) on the third lap, he was soon joined by Laurie Brooking who is a second year Junior with Team HerbaLife/WHEELBASE.co.uk. Also joining the lone leader were Tom Last and Matt Stephens (Sigma Sport Specialized Cycling Team), Ashley Finn (Cyclepremier - Metaltek) and Mike Cuming, (Team Raleigh). The group worked well together on what was a fine Spring morning where the course was overlooked by the Howgills and The Lakes in some fine countryside.

With three laps to go, it was time for some of the other riders, frustrated at not making the break, to reveal their cards on the main climb on the Kendal to Kirkby Lonsdale Road. Using this tough hill as a spring board to launch themselves out of the group, Malcolm Elliott (Motorpoint-Marshalls Pasta RT), Tom Barras (Team Raleigh), Dillon Byrne (HerbaLife/WHEELBASE.co.uk), Andy Coupe (Team Wallis CHH) and Kit Gilham and James Williamson, (Sigma Sport Specialized Cycling Team) all got clear and bridged the gap.

After hearing the bell, Matt Stephens made his move and seemingly effortlessly, the vastly experienced rider rode away from the group with only Cumming capable of responding. In the dramatic sprint for the line, it was neck and neck as the pair came in to view, matching each other up the steepest part of the climb only to then have to battle on for the line where the photo finish camera was unable to decide the winner.

During that last lap, Stephens and Cuming had eked out a lead of 1′57″ over the bunch where Tom Last, Stephen’s team mate who had just returned from Ireland where he had ridden the Tour of The North, sprinted in for third place from what was left of the original break.

Category 3/4
The support race was as equally well contested as the Elite one. Mike Marshall from Yorkshire Velo made no bones about what he wanted from the race. On the first lap, he soloed away from the group and it took a set of chasing riders three laps to catch him, including long stints on the front from WHEELBASE.co.uk rider Steve Clark. Mark Hammersley (Wheelguru Cycling Club), Jack Bowyer (Team Wallis CHH), Scott Morley (Lune RCC), and Lee Baldwin (Buxton CC/Sett Valley Cycles) set off in pursuit and after some strong riding by Marshall he was eventually reeled in. The final sprint up the finishing hill was a mirror image of the main race with Hammersley just beating Harry Grey (Birkenhead North End) to the line.

Steve Clark, WHEELBASE.co.uk has a great race but misses out on the final break to come home in 4th in the 3rd and 4th Cats.

Team Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk travelled to the P&O Irish Sea Tour of The North over the Easter weekend and came away delighted with their work.

PROLOGUE
Stage 1 was a short 1 mile time trial from the gates of The Stormont, up the impressive driveway, turning left at the roundabout within the grounds to finish in front of the historic building. The weather was heavy rain on a late April evening but that did not curb the enthusiasm within the team as Jack Pullar,Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk rode his way to 9th place out of a field of 110 riders, 6″ down on the winning time.

STAGE 2
After the initial prologue in the grounds of The Stomont, Jack Pullar started Stage 2 of The Tour of The North in 9th position. The day started well and only got better. The weather was much drier, though as the race headed south from Dundonald towards the Mourne Mountains it looked as though it could rain at any time.
Upon the approach to the first King of The Mountains Category 1 climb after 20 miles the speed picked up noticeably and then it RAINED. The climb of Slieve Croob, a long sinewy climb on roughly tarmac roads saw 3 of the Team Herbalife Wheelbase in the first 15, well positioned for the inevitable split.
The lead group later split in to a group of 15 with all 5 riders represented. This later came back together and when it split again in to a lead of 13 both Dillon Byrne, Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk and Jack Pullar, Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk were there finishing 11th and 12th respectively.
Richard Bott, Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk was in the following group of 6 and Andrew Hawdon, Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk and Stuart Henry, Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk were in the next.
The result of this meant that Jack went in to the White Jersey signifying the best U 23 rider on general classification.

STAGE 3
On the way north to Limavady the team saw the remnants of the heavy snow falls left on the hills. The race route had been diverted from the original course due to 4′ of snow still being present at the side of the roads and icy conditions still prevailing.
As such it followed a 20 mile course completed 4 times with one Category 1 climb and one Category 2 climb ascended each lap making for 1000metres of ascent.
The racing was hard and fast. Several groups, each time containing many of the favourites formed, only to be brought back. Stuart Henry and Dillon Byrne, Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk managed to get themselves into what was looking like a winning break only for it to be brought back by the bunch after gaining a sizeable lead on the last lap.
Byrne’s valiant effort throughout the day saw him move up in to 12th place on G.C. and 5th in the White Jersey competition. Richard Bott, Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk and Andrew Hawdon, Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk road a strong team game which saw the team rise up to 4th in the Team G.C.

STAGE 4
The final stage was always going to be a race from the gun. Recognising this Dillon set off with the first break, only for it to be caught shortly afterwards. Phillip Lavey, (Cycling Ulster), Dean Windsor, (Rapha Condor) and Martyn Irvine, (Planet X) and rode away with the first two never to be seen again that day. The trio established a maximum of 3′ along the north eastern coastline as the route followed the sea road. Stuart Henry’s puncture on Shane’s Hill demonstrated his calmness in adversity as he did not panic and methodically made his way through the cars to re-establish himself within the peloton. Later Stuart played a great team role as domestic tirelessly working to replenish spent water bottles for his team mates.

The final climb of the day up Glenariff saw Irvine being caught by the group as he peeled out of the lead 3. Any hopes of his Yellow Jersey disappeared as it was left to Windsor and Lavery to fight it out for the stage. If they stayed away Lavery would take the overall and whilst he competed for the stage win, Windsor took the final stage.

In the sprint for the line from the group Jack Pullar, Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk claimed 5th place, Andrew Hawdon, Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk despite being baulked by a non-sprinter got 6th and Richard Bott, Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk secured 9th, Dillon Byrne, Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk 11th and Stuart Henry, Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk 16th to allow the team to hold on to their 4th place in the Team G.C. HerbaLife/WHEELBASE.co.uk Rider - involved serious accident

During stage 2 of the Easter Four Day stage race in the north east over the Easter period, Team Herbalife/Wheelbase.co.uk rider Damian Smith was involved in a serious accident.

It is believed that he was descending a hill when a rider crashed in front of him and in attempting to take evasive action he lost control and suffered serious injuries.

He was taken to Newcastle General Hospital where his condition is described as critical but stable and he is showing steady signs of recovery.

The HerbaLife/WHEELBASE.co.uk team and WHEELBASE cycle store are in shock about the accident and pray for his swift and full recovery. Damian is the most experienced rider on the team and a close friend of the shop.

Our thoughts are with Damian, his partner and family at this tough time.
