Team Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk travelled to the P&O Irish Sea Tour of The North over the Easter weekend and came away delighted with their work.
PROLOGUE
Stage 1 was a short 1 mile time trial from the gates of The Stormont, up the impressive driveway, turning left at the roundabout within the grounds to finish in front of the historic building. The weather was heavy rain on a late April evening but that did not curb the enthusiasm within the team as Jack Pullar,Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk rode his way to 9th place out of a field of 110 riders, 6″ down on the winning time.

STAGE 2
After the initial prologue in the grounds of The Stomont, Jack Pullar started Stage 2 of The Tour of The North in 9th position. The day started well and only got better. The weather was much drier, though as the race headed south from Dundonald towards the Mourne Mountains it looked as though it could rain at any time.
Upon the approach to the first King of The Mountains Category 1 climb after 20 miles the speed picked up noticeably and then it RAINED. The climb of Slieve Croob, a long sinewy climb on roughly tarmac roads saw 3 of the Team Herbalife Wheelbase in the first 15, well positioned for the inevitable split.
The lead group later split in to a group of 15 with all 5 riders represented. This later came back together and when it split again in to a lead of 13 both Dillon Byrne, Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk and Jack Pullar, Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk were there finishing 11th and 12th respectively.
Richard Bott, Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk was in the following group of 6 and Andrew Hawdon, Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk and Stuart Henry, Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk were in the next.
The result of this meant that Jack went in to the White Jersey signifying the best U 23 rider on general classification.

STAGE 3
On the way north to Limavady the team saw the remnants of the heavy snow falls left on the hills. The race route had been diverted from the original course due to 4′ of snow still being present at the side of the roads and icy conditions still prevailing.
As such it followed a 20 mile course completed 4 times with one Category 1 climb and one Category 2 climb ascended each lap making for 1000metres of ascent.
The racing was hard and fast. Several groups, each time containing many of the favourites formed, only to be brought back. Stuart Henry and Dillon Byrne, Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk managed to get themselves into what was looking like a winning break only for it to be brought back by the bunch after gaining a sizeable lead on the last lap.
Byrne’s valiant effort throughout the day saw him move up in to 12th place on G.C. and 5th in the White Jersey competition. Richard Bott, Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk and Andrew Hawdon, Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk road a strong team game which saw the team rise up to 4th in the Team G.C.

STAGE 4
The final stage was always going to be a race from the gun. Recognising this Dillon set off with the first break, only for it to be caught shortly afterwards. Phillip Lavey, (Cycling Ulster), Dean Windsor, (Rapha Condor) and Martyn Irvine, (Planet X) and rode away with the first two never to be seen again that day. The trio established a maximum of 3′ along the north eastern coastline as the route followed the sea road. Stuart Henry’s puncture on Shane’s Hill demonstrated his calmness in adversity as he did not panic and methodically made his way through the cars to re-establish himself within the peloton. Later Stuart played a great team role as domestic tirelessly working to replenish spent water bottles for his team mates.

The final climb of the day up Glenariff saw Irvine being caught by the group as he peeled out of the lead 3. Any hopes of his Yellow Jersey disappeared as it was left to Windsor and Lavery to fight it out for the stage. If they stayed away Lavery would take the overall and whilst he competed for the stage win, Windsor took the final stage.

Andrew Hawdon, HerbaLife/WHEELBASE.co.uk
In the sprint for the line from the group Jack Pullar, Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk claimed 5th place, Andrew Hawdon, Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk despite being baulked by a non-sprinter got 6th and Richard Bott, Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk secured 9th, Dillon Byrne, Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk 11th and Stuart Henry, Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk 16th to allow the team to hold on to their 4th place in the Team G.C. Dillon Byrne, Herbalife/WHEELBASE.co.uk managing 12th in the overall
