First Look: The All-New Santa Cruz Vala Aluminium

First Look: The All-New Santa Cruz Vala Aluminium – A Value-Driven E-MTB Without Compromise

Santa Cruz has just launched the brand-new Vala Aluminium (AL) – and it’s everything you love about the original carbon Vala, now in a more affordable, alloy-framed package. With the same confident ride feel, Bosch Performance CX power, and tried-and-tested geometry, the Vala AL is designed for riders who demand performance, but appreciate value. Whether you’re just stepping into the e-MTB world or adding another bike to your collection, this is Santa Cruz’s most accessible full-fat e-bike to date – and it’s here to impress.

Built Around the Bosch Performance Line CX Motor

At the heart of every Vala AL is the Bosch Performance Line CX motor – the class-leading drive unit that’s smooth, responsive, and packed with torque. With 600Wh of battery capacity on board, plus the option to extend your range with a 250Wh Powermore range extender, you’ve got the legs for all-day epics or quick laps after work.

Santa Cruz has also included a wireless handlebar remote and clean, multifunctional display that keeps ride data accessible without cluttering the cockpit – simple, effective, and ready for the trail.

Vala AL: Two Builds, Two Colours Same Frame – Which One’s for You?

The Vala AL is available in two kit options: the Deore and the T-Type. Both share the same aluminium MX frame (150mm rear travel / 160mm fork), built to the same strength and stiffness standards as Santa Cruz’s carbon frames. But the spec choices reflect different riding styles, budgets, and component preferences.

Vala AL Deore – £4,899

Trail-tuned and budget-conscious, the Deore build gives you the best of the Vala platform at the most accessible price point.

  • Drivetrain: Shimano Deore 12-speed (10–51T)
  • Suspension: RockShox Psylo Gold RC (160mm) & Deluxe Select shock
  • Brakes: Shimano Deore M6120 with 220mm front / 203mm rear rotors
  • Wheels: WTB ST Tough 30
  • Tyres: Maxxis Assegai EXO+ & Minion DHRII DD
  • Weight: 24.09 kg (53.1 lbs)

Perfect for newer riders, price-conscious adventurers, or those dipping their toes into the e-MTB scene without cutting corners on performance.

Vala AL T-Type – £5,599

Built tougher and specced higher, the T-Type build is for riders who want more from their components and ride harder, further, and faster.

  • Drivetrain: SRAM Eagle T-Type 70 12-speed (10–52T)
  • Suspension: RockShox Zeb Base (160mm) & Super Deluxe Base shock
  • Brakes: SRAM DB8 with 220mm front / 200mm rear rotors
  • Wheels: Reserve 30|HD AL alloy rims
  • Tyres: Maxxis Assegai MaxxGrip EXO+ & Minion DHRII DD
  • Weight: 24.35 kg (53.68 lbs)

Ideal for more experienced e-MTB riders who want a robust build that can tackle rowdy descents and long days in the mountains.

Vala AL Geometry – Composed & Confidence-Inspiring

With a 64° head angle, size-specific reach (433–498mm), and MX wheels (29” front / 27.5” rear), the Vala AL keeps the handling sharp and playful while maximising rollover and traction. The 150mm rear travel is matched with a 160mm fork for the perfect all-mountain balance.

Key geo highlights:

  • BB Height: 342mm
  • Effective seat tube angle: 76.2°–76.9° across sizes
  • Standover (M): 745mm
  • Wheelbase (L): 1271mm

Santa Cruz has eliminated the flip chip complexity in favour of a single, mid-position setup that delivers predictable performance on any terrain – from techy descents to flowy singletrack.

Who’s the Vala AL For?

Santa Cruz didn’t just build this bike for beginners. The Vala AL is for a wide range of riders:

  • Core Converts: Riders with a traditional MTB background, adding an e-bike to the stable.
  • New Friends: First-timers in the Santa Cruz world who want a premium ride without going full carbon.
  • Discerning Buyers: Value-conscious cyclists who want a reliable, high-performance e-MTB from a respected brand.

It’s the same Vala DNA, just more attainable. For some, this will be the gateway to their e-bike journey. For others, a trusty companion to their analog MTB. But no matter your story, the Vala Aluminium makes no compromises.

Why the Vala AL Matters

Santa Cruz has redefined what “entry-level” means in e-MTB. With premium ride quality, industry-leading Bosch power, and a lifetime frame warranty, the Vala Aluminium proves that value doesn’t mean cutting corners—it means getting the most from every ride.

Vala AL: Same soul. Lower cost. Built to last.

Whyte’s All-New Gravel Line-Up – Verro & Tourus 2026

Whyte Bikes have taken a bold step into 2026 with the launch of two brand-new gravel bikes: the Verro and the Tourus. Both models are built around the same proven Whyte design philosophy—performance-first geometry, thoughtful spec, and real-world versatility—but they’re aimed at very different kinds of riders. Whether you’re venturing deep into the backcountry or simply want one bike that can do it all, there’s something here to get excited about.

Whyte Verro 2026 – Adventure Starts Where the Tarmac Ends

If your idea of fun includes taking the road less travelled, tackling rough tracks, or loading up for a few days off-grid, the Whyte Verro Gravel Bike 2026 is built for you. This is Whyte’s most progressive adventure gravel bike to date—combining drop-bar speed with serious off-road ability.

At its core is a rugged hydroformed 6061 T6 aluminium frame with full mounting points on both frame and fork, letting you strap on everything from bikepacking bags to extra bottle cages. A Trans0X dropper post with a bar-mounted Rocker remote gives mountain bike-like control, especially on steeper descents, while 700x50c Maxxis Ravager tyres on wide 30mm rims add loads of grip and cushioning.

SRAM’s Apex 1×12 drivetrain offers a massive gear range (40T x 10-52T) for both steep climbs and fast descents, and oversized 180/160mm rotors on the Apex hydraulic brakes ensure powerful, consistent braking even when fully loaded.

This is a gravel bike with genuine trail capability—perfect for mountain bikers wanting to explore drop-bar life, or adventurers looking to push further, deeper, and rougher.

Whyte Tourus 2026 – One Bike for Work and Weekend

Where the Verro is built to roam, the Whyte Tourus Gravel Bike 2026 is all about versatility. From city streets to gravel tracks, the Tourus delivers smooth performance and practical features that make it a true all-rounder.

The Tourus shares the same durable hydroformed 6061 T6 alloy frame as its sibling, but with a geometry tuned for all-road comfort and control. Mounting points for racks, mudguards, and gear make it perfect for commuters or tourers, and the 700x45c Maxxis Reaver tyres roll fast on tarmac while offering just enough bite for rougher sections.

A Shimano GRX 2×10 drivetrain balances wide-range gearing with smooth, reliable shifting—ideal for carrying loads up hills or keeping pace on the flat. Hydraulic GRX brakes provide dependable stopping power, while the wider 23mm rims offer a planted, composed feel across surfaces.

Whether you’re heading into town, loading up for a weekend tour, or riding gravel for fun, the Tourus is that “just right” bike that fits into your everyday life and beyond.

Final Thoughts

With the Verro and Tourus, Whyte have delivered two distinct takes on what a gravel bike can be. The Verro is for riders chasing adventure and demanding more off-road performance from a drop-bar platform. The Tourus, on the other hand, is a true multi-purpose machine—ideal for daily duty with enough versatility for weekend rides and beyond.

Expect these two to become firm favourites with UK riders looking for tough, reliable, and forward-thinking bikes that don’t just fit into their lifestyles—they expand them.

First Look: Cervélo S5 2026 – The Benchmark Just Got Even Faster

In a sport where milliseconds can make the difference between glory and obscurity, the Cervélo S5 has always been one of the peloton’s most potent weapons. With a race résumé that includes Wout van Aert’s dominant Green Jersey campaign and Simon Yates charging into the maglia rosa, it’s a machine proven at the sharp end of professional racing. For 2026, Cervélo isn’t just refining a classic—they’ve turned up the dial on speed, aerodynamics, and integration. The result? A lighter, faster, and more ferociously aero S5 that looks set to continue its reign at the top of the aero road category.

The Next Evolution of Speed

Cervélo claims the new S5 is over 6 watts faster than its predecessor, with 124 grams shaved off the total system weight. Most of these performance gains come from a complete rethink of the front end—a critical area for aero drag. The updated fork legs and deeper head tube work in harmony with an all-new one-piece handlebar and stem, which evolves the iconic V-stem design and prioritises airflow at every angle. This isn’t just a facelift—it’s a full aerodynamic overhaul, right where it matters most.

The S5 retains its confident handling, poise and stability—traits that have endeared it to riders who want performance without compromise. Whether you’re sprinting at 70kph or carving alpine descents, the new bike maintains that planted feel that made the previous model a go-to for both pros and privateers.

Reserve Wheels Made to Match

A big story for 2026 is the collaboration with Reserve on the new 57|64 Turbulent Aero wheelset. Specifically shaped for the S5’s frame profile, these wheels perfectly align with the asymmetry of the seat tube and hug the frame’s cut-outs for seamless air transition. Designed to be stable even in crosswinds, they not only improve handling but also contribute an additional 3 watts of aero efficiency compared to the previous 52|63 setup—all without a weight penalty.

Aero-Obsessed, Rider-Focused

The new HB19 cockpit follows Cervélo’s “Plus-Four” concept—where the bar is 4cm narrower at the hoods than in the drops. It’s a subtle tweak, but it helps riders adopt a more aerodynamic position while maintaining control for sprints and descents. And despite the increased surface area from deeper fork and head tube profiles, the total system weight drops, thanks to clever carbon layup optimisation and lightweight hardware.

The S5’s geometry remains race-focused with aggressive reach and stack numbers, and its performance credentials are complemented by a selection of top-tier builds. Whether you prefer Shimano Dura-Ace Di2, Ultegra Di2, or SRAM’s Red, Force or Rival AXS, each version comes kitted with a power meter and premium finishing kit, including Selle Italia’s NOVUS BOOST EVO saddles and Vittoria Corsa Pro TLR tyres as standard.

Final Thoughts

The Cervélo S5 2026 isn’t a bike for the faint-hearted. It’s purpose-built for speed addicts, watt-counters, and anyone who wants to line up knowing they’re on the fastest setup the rules will allow. Lighter, faster and more aerodynamic than ever before, the S5 continues to set the benchmark that other aero bikes will be judged against.

If pure speed is your goal, this is your bike. Welcome to the front of the bunch.

Cervélo Áspero-5: The Fastest Gravel Race Bike Just Landed at Wheelbase

Gravel racing just changed pace — and the new 2026 Cervélo Áspero-5 is leading the charge.

Over the last few years, gravel riding in the UK has exploded in popularity — and it’s easy to see why. Blending the speed of road cycling with the freedom of off-road adventure, gravel gives riders the chance to explore scenic bridleways, forest tracks, and rural backroads, away from traffic and tarmac. Events like the Dirty Reiver and The Gralloch have cemented gravel racing as one of the UK’s fastest-growing cycling disciplines.

For many riders, gravel is the perfect middle ground: fast enough for group rides and events, rugged enough for year-round adventures. With the UK’s diverse terrain, from rolling hills to coastal paths and wild moorland, there’s no shortage of places to ride. That’s where the Cervélo Áspero-5 comes in — designed specifically for the demands of modern gravel racing, with aerodynamic advantages, off-road geometry, and race-ready features that give you the edge when the terrain gets tough.

The all new Áspero-5 has been designed for serious riders who want road-bike speed on rough terrain, the Áspero-5 is 37 Watts faster than the previous generation and leaves the competition in its dust. Lighter, sleeker and more efficient, it’s a true performance machine — and now available at Wheelbase.co.uk with Cycle to Work, 0% Finance options from V12 and PayPal Credit.

Engineered for Speed. Built for Gravel.

The Áspero-5 has been fine-tuned for maximum aerodynamic advantage without sacrificing the rugged capabilities needed for tough gravel courses. With a frame 66 grams lighter than its predecessor and a cockpit that alone saves nearly 6 Watts, Cervélo has set a new benchmark in gravel performance. Every detail — from the shaped frame tubing to the hidden storage solutions — contributes to one simple goal: going faster, everywhere.

A key feature is the new aero handlebar and stem combo, offering better customisation and 5.7W of extra speed over previous models. Add in the industry-first downtube storage, tyre clearance up to 45mm, and optimised geometry for mixed-width tyres (e.g. 40mm front, 44mm rear), and you’ve got a race-ready setup that thrives on technical trails and smooth fire roads alike.

Precision Geometry for Balanced Control

Speed is nothing without stability — and Cervélo has dialled in the Áspero-5’s geometry to deliver both. With six sizes available (48–61), the bike offers a carefully tuned combination of reach, stack, and angles that ensures confidence and performance on all terrain.

Whether you’re a smaller rider looking for nimble handling or a taller racer chasing maximum stability, the Áspero-5’s geometry keeps you centred and in control – no matter how rough the route ahead.

Whyte Secta Hardtail Mountain Bike – Built for the Lake District’s Toughest Trails

If you’re searching for a trail-ready hardtail that thrives in real-world conditions like those found in the Lake District, the Whyte Secta is purpose-built to deliver. With progressive geometry, intelligently curated components, and 20 years of trail expertise behind its design, the Secta is the perfect partner for riders ready to explore everything from forest singletrack to steep Lakeland descents.

Ready for a Range of Trails

The Whyte Secta isn’t just a budget-friendly entry into trail riding – it’s a versatile, well-specced machine that’s ready for everything from fast-flowing XC loops around Grizedale to the rockier, more technical descents of Whinlatter and Helvellyn. Whether you’re heading out on a full-day epic or sessioning your favourite singletrack lines, Secta delivers a capable, exhilarating ride.

Its aluminium chassis, refined across 13 elements (nine of which are brand-new), has been developed from the ground up using Whyte’s latest geometry thinking – resulting in a modern hardtail that’s balanced, agile, and composed on even the gnarliest Lakeland trails.

Swift, Efficient and Confidence-Inspiring

When you’re pedalling up sharp climbs or traversing technical rocky sections common to the Lakes, the Secta’s direct power transfer gives you efficient propulsion. Its lighter weight compared to a full-suspension bike means faster acceleration, making it ideal for riders who want to cover more ground, quickly and confidently.

Whyte have poured all their hardtail know-how into the Secta, crafting a bike that delivers confidence-inspiring handling, swift responsiveness, and trail-ready toughness without the fuss.

Quality, Simplicity and Reliability

Let’s be honest – Lake District weather isn’t always kind. That’s why the Secta has been designed to keep maintenance low and performance high, even after a muddy weekend in the fells. Fewer moving parts than a full-sus bike, combined with weather-sealed internal cable routing, a threaded bottom bracket, and external chainstay routing, mean it’s as easy to look after as it is to ride.

And while it’s competitively priced, this is no basic build. You get a fully-featured aluminium frame, well-specced components, and clever touches like SRAM UDH compatibility and tool/bottle mounts – all of which add real-world value to your ride.

Balanced for Every Ride

The Total Geometry concept at the heart of the Secta gives it uniquely balanced handling: confident on the downs, comfortable on long climbs, and playful through technical terrain.

63.5° head angle, 35mm stem, and 44mm offset fork deliver stable, reactive steering.

Size-specific seat angles (from 75.5° to 77°) enhance climbing efficiency and rider comfort.

A sub-300mm ride height keeps the centre of gravity low for nimble, responsive handling.

Matched with a 130mm fork that hits the suspension sweet spot, you get the perfect blend of stability and trail pop.

Well-Specced for Adventure

Everything about the Secta is designed for real-world trail use:

29” wheels and 2.5” Maxxis tyres provide speed, traction and cushion across mixed terrain.

Shimano 1X drivetrain delivers smooth, reliable shifting.

Hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm rotors offer confident braking even on long, steep descents.

Long-stroke dropper post compatibility and 300mm seat tube insertion give full control on sketchy terrain.

Bottle cage and tool storage mounts lower the centre of gravity while keeping essentials close at hand.

The Perfect Hardtail for Lake District Trails

From Windermere to Whinlatter, the Whyte Secta thrives in the rugged beauty of the Lake District. It’s an MTB that feels just as at home weaving through woodland switchbacks as it does powering up rocky bridleways. Whether you’re progressing your trail skills or after a no-nonsense hardtail that won’t hold you back, the Secta is a smart, performance-driven choice.

Whyte Secta – Ride further, faster, and with more confidence on every Lake District adventure.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli Unveils 2025 Squad: A New Era Begins

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli Unveils 2025 Squad: A New Era Begins

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli Team Launch Video 2025

The excitement is palpable as Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli officially unveils its 2025 team lineup, setting the stage for another thrilling season of racing. With a dynamic blend of returning riders and fresh talent, the team is geared up for success on the UK and international racing scene.

A Stronger, Faster Team for 2025

After an impressive 2024 season, Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli has opted for stability.  Team Manager Stu Reid has prioritised continuity, retaining a core group of experienced riders and making just four new signings. With a focus on endurance, speed, and teamwork, the 2025 iteration of the team is ready to push the limits.

With only two departures, the team heads into 2025 with a balanced mix of proven performers and fresh talent.

The seven retained riders from last season include a list of proven domestic race winners and protagonists: Tom Martin, Thomas Armstrong, Tim Shoreman, Jacob Smith, Lee Rosie, Aaron King, and David Lines.

Tom Martin remains a crucial part of the squad. The Rás Tailteann stage winner brings aggression and tactical nous, capable of seizing opportunities in breakaways when others hesitate. Alongside him, Thomas Armstrong has been a consistent performer in National A races, securing top-ten finishes at the Lancaster Grand Prix and the Beaumont Trophy, proving himself as a dependable rider in the biggest domestic one-day events.

If there’s one rider in the squad capable of winning any race on the British domestic calendar, it’s Tim Shoreman. A powerful all-rounder with a fast finish, he has already demonstrated his ability to mix it with the best, winning the Colne Grand Prix in 2023, finishing second in the East Cleveland Classic in 2024 and winning the final stage of the Rás last year.

So Who’s New?

James McKay is a big signing for 2025.  The former Saint Piran rider was one of the most consistent performers in the National Road Series last year, picking up multiple top ten finishes, including second at the Lancaster Grand Prix and third at the East Cleveland Classic.

Mitchell McLoughlin, joining from the All Human – VeloRevolution Cycling Team, brings experience from both road and track racing. As a para-tandem pilot for the Irish Paralympic track team, he has spent much of the last Olympic cycle focusing on the velodrome. However, he has a strong road background and will be a key figure for Wheelbase in the National Circuit Series.

Dexter Leeming-Sykes joins the team after a stint racing in France at Team U Charente-Maritime. His most notable result in the UK came at the 2023 Rapha Lincoln Grand Prix, where he finished seventh on debut – a clear indication of his talent.

Max Bufton, steps up from the junior ranks. Having raced for Tofauti Everyone Active, he was recommended to Reid by Welsh Cycling’s Rob Atkinson. The team is eager to support his transition into senior racing.

The team will be managed by experienced D.S Stu Reid
