Our History

WHEELBASE, home of the UK’s largest cycle store in the Lake District National Park has been at the forefront of the bicycle industry for over 25 years. Living and breathing bikes, the team behind Wheelbase have successfully built up their business across the North of England with long-serving stores in Staveley, Ilkley and Darlington; more recently we have expanded nationally opening flagship stores in Coventry and Stockton-on-Tees. As well as our brick and mortar stores we sell online to customers all over the UK through our wheelbase.co.uk website.

We pride ourselves on being an inclusive and friendly store for everyone who loves cycling, whether that be road cycling, mountain biking, touring, commuting, family riding or e-Bikes. We are a team united by a passion for bikes and we have a wide range of cycling experience and expertise amongst our sales staff, mechanics and mail order team.

Our passion for cycling is invested back into the sport through the sponsorship and support of our road race team Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli which, after 15 years, is now the longest-running British Elite team in the UK.

We hold our annual mountain bike Big Demo Weekend in March, attracting up to 250 riders to our Lake District store for a weekend of guided riding where customers get the chance to ride the latest, greatest mountain bikes and e-MTBs from the world’s best bike brands. Wheelbase are title sponsors and long-term supporters of the Fred Whitton Challenge, the UK’s most gruelling sportive which takes place right on our doorstep in the Lake District Park and includes over 3,000 metres of elevation and takes in some of the Lake District’s most iconic climbs over the 112 mile route.

Here at Wheelbase we pride ourselves on being inclusive retailers who are ready to help EVERYONE get into cycling. With so many options and styles of bike available, it’s worth taking your time and talking to an expert to find out which bike is best suited to each of your needs; Wheelbase is here to help equip you for all of your cycling adventures, big or small.
