SCOTT ASPECT eRIDE 950 – PRODUCT FEATURE

 

Our latest product feature takes a look at a fun and fast hardtail eMTB from one of the most recent brands to be available at Wheelbase; a really good mix of bikes have been arriving from top Swiss brand Scott over the last few weeks with everything from aerodynamic carbon road bikes to cutting-edge full suspension mountain bikes with internal shocks (see our Scott Spark RC Team Issue AXS Fast Bike Friday feature here) and now this latest arrival – the Scott Aspect eRIDE 950 e-mountain bike.

The Aspect eRIDE 950 is a great looking, compact and agile hardtail mountain bike designed to excel off-road on singletrack trails, gravel tracks, canal tow-paths or even on your daily commute to and from work when a versatile, rugged and durable eMTB really comes into its own. Scott have spec’d the Aspect eRIDE 950 with a drive system from Bosch, the industry’s most reliable and proven eBike motor manufacturers. This powerful electric pedal-assist eMTB features a removeable integrated 500Wh battery neatly stowed into the downtube which powers a compact, versatile Bosch Gen 3 Active Line Plus motor which can be controlled from the handle bars to customise performance for you and your unique riding circumstances.

As the eBike market matures and each generation of pedal-assist bike is succeeded by another we see more and more design refinements and further integration between the bike’s chassis and the chosen drive system. Scott have designed the Aspect eRIDE 950 to be one complete unit with the Bosch motor and battery being carefully considered when it comes to weight distribution and achieving a fully-balanced bike. With a light but tough alloy frame, large 29er wheels and proven frame geometry taken from their own analogue hardtail mountain bikes Scott have created a fun and agile eMTB which comes alive on the downhill trails and is ready to help you get back up to the top with relative ease.

Scott’s E2 alloy frame provides a balanced chassis that contributes to a great handling eMTB.

 

Other nice details on the versatile Aspect eRIDE 950 include a specific mount fixed on the downtube’s bottle cage which allows for the fitting of an additional Bosh Range Extender battery to bring the total power at your disposal to 1125Wh. For those of you suffering from ‘range anxiety’ this is a great option which will help to open up your riding even further and encourage you to take on all-day epic rides. With this extra battery in place charging is distributed to both batteries with the Bosch Purion display unit indicating the total charge across both batteries. Scott have routed power cables internally in the frame to enable you to mount front and rear lights (not included) drawing power straight from the integrated drive unit battery. If you’re more inclined to pilot such a bike to and from work then the Aspect eRIDE 950 can be fitted with a rear pannier rack and mudguards; Scott produce their own racks and mudguards that are compatible with the bike and are sold separately.

Light and strong the E2 frame is custom butted and features internal cable routing.

 

The Scot Aspect eRIDE 950 is spec’d with Bosch’s powerful Gen 3 Active Line Plus drive system which thanks to its compact design has been seamlessly integrated into the lightweight E2 alloy frame. This small motor provides pedal assistance up to 15mph / 21.14kph providing up to 50Nm of torque drive. The motor is incredibly quiet thanks to its clever construction which includes tough nylon gears and when the motor’s top speed is reached and it cuts out until 15mph is re-established there is barely any noticeable pedal resistance.

Bosch’s Gen 3 Active Line Plus is a quiet yet powerful drive system.

The Bosch Active Line Plus drive system is controlled via Bosch’s Purion Display; this compact on-board computer allows you to tailor your pedal assistance and battery range while you ride as well as providing you with all of the key information required to get the best out of the Scott Aspect eRIDE 950.

Scott have spec’d the rest of the Aspect eRIDe 950 really well with a capable SR Suntour XCM34 coil-sprung fork with 120mm of travel to handle the big hits when you inevitably come into technical off-road sections at speed; there’s a remote lockout included too so if you find yourself spending more time on the road then you’ll be able to completely lockout the fork for more efficiency.

The capable SR Suntour XCM34 Coil fork can handle the extra speed of an eMTB.

When it comes to the bike’s drivetrain there’s a reliable, precise-shifting Shimano mixed groupset consisting of a 9-speed 11-36T cassette combined with an Alivio rear derailleur and a light-action Shimano SL-M2000 trigger shifter. With a 32T chainring upfront matched with that wide-ratio cassette out back you’ll always be able to find the right gear regardless of whether you’re climbing a steep, loose off-road trail or are putting the power down on smooth, flat and fast tarmac. When it comes to braking Shimano BR-MT200 hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm rotors provide plenty of power and modulation to help keep you in control even with the extra speeds gained from that Powerful Bosch motor.

There’s a great mix of Shimano drivetrain components on the Scott Aspect eRIDE 950.

 

The 9-speed Shimano Acera rear derailleur provides crisp, precise gear shifts.

 

The 9-speed rear cassette has a good spread of gears from 11T to 36T.

 

Each gear shift is light and fast via the Shimano SL-M2000 9-speed trigger shifter.

 

Powerful Shimano hydraulic disc brakes provide reliable braking in all scenarios.

 

The Shimano disc brakes only require single-finger braking.

 

A big part of the Aspect eRIDE 950’s versatility is down to those large 29er wheels fitted with wide Kenda tyres. The 29” Syncros wheels roll well over unpredictable off-road terrain, helping you to hold your speed and keep your momentum as you negotiate tight, technical trails. The extra assistance of the Bosch Gen 3 Active Line Plus motor combined with those large diameter wheels also come into their own when you’re riding in urban environments and need to get from A to B in as quick and efficient a way as possible.

With Boost spacing and thru axles the Syncros wheels featuring Shimano hubs provide a secure interface between the frame and wheel.

 

The Syncros X18 rims are nice and wide, giving the Kenda tyres a broader footprint for enhanced grip and control.

 

Kenda Booster 29×2.6″ tyres on the front and rear cope well with the extra forces incurred from an eMTB.
