A departure from tradition

In early 2025, Santa Cruz launched the Vala, a full-powered electric mountain bike built around Bos­ch’s new CX Gen 5 motor. What makes it noteworthy isn’t just the boost—it’s the break from their signature VPP suspension. Instead, the Vala employs a Horst‑link four‑bar design, marking the first non‑VPP long‑travel bike in the lineup.

Why four‑bar?

This shift was necessitated by the new, bulkier Bosch motor and a desire for cleaner kinematics—Santa Cruz engineers needed space and wanted a suspension system that pedalled and braked more neutrally. Enter the four‑bar, which also enables clever features like a flip‑chip for geometry adjustment.
