Burgtec Oval Thick Thin Chainring – SRAM 3-Bolt
If the idea of gaining free mechanical advantage sounds appealing, this oval chainring is exactly what you’re looking for. After extensive research and countless prototypes with different levels of ovality, Burgtec found the sweet spot: 115% from top centre. This optimised shape reduces the dead spot in your pedal stroke while maintaining the same silent, flawless chain retention as their round rings.
By shortening the weak zones at the top and bottom of the power curve, the oval profile gets you back into the power phase sooner – and that’s where the magic happens. You gain increased gearing on the downstroke and faster crank speed to drive the pedals back into the power phase continually. Since around 80% of your power comes from the downward motion, this design effectively gives you more usable power for the same effort. Bigger gear in the power phase, smaller gear in the dead spot. Win-win.
Oval Sizing Explained
All Burgtec oval rings run + / – 2 teeth:
- 30T feels like 32T in the power phase and 28T in the dead spot
- 32T feels like 34T in the power phase and 30T in the dead spot
Burgtec recommends choosing the same tooth count as your current round ring for the best experience.
