The Brand Behind the Bikes
Since its founding in 1972 by engineer-visionary Ike Tseng, Merida set out with a bold mission: to overturn the negative perception of Taiwanese-built bikes and demonstrate what could be achieved with precision, innovation and sheer determination. What began as a modest factory making BMX and ten-speed road bikes for the US market quickly evolved—Merida were among the earliest manufacturers to produce mountain bikes for the same market in the 1980s.
In 1988, Merida took a defining leap: transitioning from original-equipment manufacturing for other brands to launching its own tiny range—marking the birth of the Merida brand we know today. The name itself—Me-Ri-Da—combines Chinese characters conveying beauty, convenience and fluid movement—embodying the founder’s vision of helping riders reach their destination with elegance and efficiency.
Innovation has been at the brand’s core from the start. In the mid-1990s, Merida introduced aluminium TIG-welding (the MATTS system), produced its first-generation e-bike, deployed robot welders for superior build consistency, and became Taiwan’s first ISO-certified bike manufacturer.
Fast forward to recent years: Merida remains future-forward. They were early adopters of disc brakes for road bikes, pioneered award-winning e-mountain bikes like the eONE-SIXTY, and updated production lines to support advanced e-bike manufacturing. Today, Merida maintains a highly integrated R&D model—combining Taiwanese factories with German design excellence—and continues fine-tuning equipment used by pro teams, including their long-standing partnership with Bahrain Victorious.
Moreover, Merida sits at the heart of Taiwan’s renowned bicycle industry ecosystem—an innovation hub where specialist suppliers, committed to high-tech manufacturing, collaborate to elevate product quality globally.
