CANNONDALE TOPSTONE CARBON 3 650B – PRODUCT FEATURE

Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650B

We’re back with another product feature! This time we’re taking a closer look at the Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650B featuring (as the model name suggests) smaller-diameter 650B wheels with fatter 47mm tyres compared to the rest of the Topstone Carbon range which are spec’d with larger diameter 700c wheels and slightly narrower tyres.

It’s a testament to just how much Cannondale understand the diverse nature of gravel biking and the many riding interpretations within ‘gravel’ that they offer a choice wheel size within the small range of Topstones. In fact Cannondale could legitimately claim to have the most varied choice of gravel bike specifications of any brand.

Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650B

The Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650B is built ready to play…

With all Topstone Carbons featuring Cannondale’s unique Kingpin rear suspension configuration their current range of gravel bikes cater to every style of riding; for example choose the Topstone Carbon 2 Lefty for rowdy riding on the trails thanks to their super-plush 30mm travel Lefty Oliver front suspension fork, the Topstone Carbon 2 L for speedy efficiency and Bikepacking luggage carrying capacity along with the SmartSense lighting system allowing you to continue riding late into the night. Then there’s the Topstone Carbon 3 650B that we’re looking at today which is crying out to be ridden hard and on tight singletrack thanks to those fatter, more capable tyres.

Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650B

Already one of the most versatile gravel bikes out there; the inclusion of 650B wheels with fatter tyres opens up your riding possibilities even more.

This latest generation Topstone Carbon features some really sorted geometry which is almost identical to its predecessor, because it worked! Cannondale have really nailed it when it comes to using the sort of angles that keep you stable at speed, with the bike still being agile and responsive thanks to those short chainstays. Thanks to Cannondale’s OutFront steering the Topstone Carbon 3 650B never feels skittish or nervous on the descents and when you take the bike onto tight, technical singletrack you won’t lose control or feel like the bike is getting away from you.

Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650B

The geometry of the Cannondale Topstone Carbon gives a really confidence-inspiring ride.

Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650B

The slim, flattened out top tube and junction with the seat tube is design to flex for more compliance.

It’s worth noting too that Cannondale have included their Proportional Response principle to the construction of each frame size in the Topstone Carbon range. This size-specific manufacturing technique involves using different carbon layups specific to the size of frame and fork meaning that every size of rider experiences exactly the same ride quality regardless of the size of Topstone Carbon they’re on.

Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650B

Proportional response means that every size of rider experiences exactly the same ride quality.

You’ll probably already be familiar with Cannondale’s iconic Kingpin suspension system from the original Topstone Carbon; it was very much the bike’s unique selling point. When the newest version of the Topstone Carbon launched last year the same rear suspension featured a new low-friction bushing which was more durable than the previous version’s cartridge bearing setup. This simple system which relies on the engineered flex of the carbon fibre rear triangle provides 30mm of travel at the saddle and 10mm at the rear axle; it takes the sting out of rough terrain without adding any extra weight or complexity and is completely maintenance-free.

Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650B

The Topstone Carbon’s unique Kingpin rear suspension configuration provides 30mm of travel at the saddle.

Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650B

There’s an option to fit a small top tube bag to your Topstone Carbon; the perfect solution for long days in the saddle.

Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650B

Want to run a single chainring up front? No problem, the front derailleur hanger is removable.

The Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650B is equipped ready to upgrade to Cannondale’s SmartSense system which entails front & rear lights, rear radar and an integrated PowerPack. This system was originally seen on the most recent-generation Cannondale Synapse endurance road bike when it caused a bit of stir, with customers indifferent to having it fitted as standard at point of purchase. Some models in the Topstone Carbon range do feature the system, however, here the Carbon 3 650B does not include it and instead features a handy cradle where the SmartSense battery would have been located. This cradle accommodates a spare inner tube and multi-tool – a nice storage solution for when you need to be well-equipped on epic gravel rides.

Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650B

The small cradle sitting neatly within the frame’s downtube recess allows you to carry a tube and mini-tool on your frame.

Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650B

The Topstone Carbon 3 650B includes a Cannondale wheel sensor which pairs up with the Cannondale App to measure key metrics.

Cannondale have done everything possible to encourage you to spend longer on your gravel bike. The versatility of the Topstone Carbon 3 650B shows itself in its superior carrying capability; while the bike excels at short, fast blasts around your local woods when you want to load it up and head out on a multi-day adventure there’s a ton of gear and water bottle mount bosses on the frame and fork for all of your Bikepacking luggage.

Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650B

Cannondale want you to spend as much time on your bike as possible and have included multiple bolt-on bosses on the frame and forks.

Within the current range of Topstone Carbon bikes most models are fitted with the larger-diameter 700c wheel size option; a Topstone with this size of wheel can comfortably handle a 45mm wide tyre thanks to the ample clearance between trye and frame/fork. Here though, with the smaller diameter 650B wheelset fitted the, Topstone Carbon 3 can accommodate an even wider 47mm tyre. That’s the defining factor of this particular model, with those smaller 650B wheels and slightly fatter tyres adding more comfort and compliance to your ride while creating an even more playful and agile ride.

Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650B

There’s plenty of tyre clearance even with the chunky 47mm with 650B tyres fitted.

Cannondale have spec’d the Topstone Carbon 3 650B with a nice mix of drivetrain components and finishing kit. Shimano take care of the groupset with a mix of 11-speed gravel-specific GRX 660 and GRX 810 components. The GRX 600 gear shifter and brake units feel great in your hands and have been designed to provide light, crisp gear selections as well as powerful hydraulic braking even when your hands are positioned on the hoods thanks to a clever tweak to the position of the brake lever pivot. The Shimano GRX 810 11-speed rear derailleur moves flawlessly through the block giving you all the gear ratios you’ll need, regardless of whether you’re flying downhill on a smooth tarmac road or are slowly inching your way up a steep, loose gravel climb.

Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650B

An 11-speed Shimano GRX 810 rear derailleur takes cares of gear shifting duties and performs flawlessly.

The Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650B boasts a conventional threaded bottom bracket as opposed to the press-fit option seen on the previous generation Topstone. The return of the threaded bottom bracket is pretty universal across all leading bike brands and the rational is twofold; first off it makes home bike maintenance easier and means speedy bottom bracket changes are a more realistic option – a plus if you’re touring remote areas of the world on your Topstone! Secondly, by moving away from press-fit to a threaded bottom bracket any potential for unwanted noise reverberating through the frame is removed. Cannondale have paired the threaded bottom bracket with an FSA Gossamer Pro Modular AGX+ crankset featuring 46/30T chainrings which, when combined with the 11-34T cassette will give you all the gear ratios you’ll need regardless of whether you’re zipping along on the tarmac or grovelling up a steep gravel climb.

Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650B

An FSA Gossamer Pro Modular AGX+ crankset featuring 46/30T chainrings will give you all the gear ratios you’ll need.

Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650B

Shimano GRX 600 shifters provide instantaneous, light-feeling gear shifts, even in difficult riding conditions.

Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650B

Shimano GRX 600 hydraulic brake calipers provide consistent braking performance, delivering just the right amount of breaking power when you need it.

The Cannondale 3 alloy handlebars feature a nice 16 degree flare at the drops to help give you a wider stance when you’re descending on the drops; it’s amazing how this small change to handlebar configuration can give you a much more confidence-inspiring ride. You feel way more in control on fast, technical descents and are encouraged to wrestle the bike through technical terrain thanks to the extra leverage provided. Cannondale have spec’d the Topstone Carbon 3 650B with a conventional alloy seatpost, however, if you find your riding getting ever more rowdy and you’re pushing the limits of control you may prefer to retro fit a dropper post; the frame can accommodate internal cable routing for a dropper post should you decide to fit one.

Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650B

A pair of gravel-specific Cannondale 3 alloy handlebars with a subtle flair at the drops puts you in a confidence-inspiring position.

All of the latest-generation Cannondale Topstone Carbons include a significant change to their wheel and frame configuration compared to the previous Topstone. Gone is their unique Ai system which required the rear wheel to dished differently to a conventional wheel. This meant that swapping out wheels from one bike to another was more complicated than it needed to be; now all wheels feature standard dishing for easy interchangeability. The other improvement is seen in the mud-shedding clearance capability of the new Topstone thanks to that new dropped drive-side chainstay.

Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650B

Increased tyre clearance and conventional wheel spacing, it’s a win win!

Those 650B wheels which give this bike its model name are more compact and robust than their 700c counterparts and are begging to be ridden hard over technical off-road terrain. Cannondale have spec’d a durable pair of WTB ST i25 TCS 650B rims laced to smooth-rolling Formula hubs featuring hard-wearing cartridge bearings. Shod with 47mm wide Vittoria Terreno Dry 650B tyres this Topstone will zip along on tarmac with the minimal tyre tread rolling along efficiently without any unwanted drag; swing the bike off-road though and there’s just enough grip to keep you in control and riding in confidence when the ground gets loose and unpredictable.

Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650B

Wide volume Vittoria Terreno Dry tyres, roll fast, grip well and add provide enhanced comfort over rough terrain thanks to their larger size.

Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650B

Cannondale nailed the Topstone’s geometry on the previous version, so remains the same for the latest iteration.

As we’ve already highlighted Cannondale have certainly brought an incredibly versatile range of carbon gravel bikes to the market with their Topstone Carbon bikes. Reflecting a good understanding of the subtle differences in the way that riders are using their gravel bikes they’ve ensured there’s an option for every style of riding. The Topstone Carbon 3 650B is a fantastic choice for someone looking for a simple gravel bike that’s built to take on more technical, playful terrain without the need for the sort of front suspension seen on some of the other Topstone models where Cannondale’s Lefty fork is spec’d. The Kingpin rear suspension configuration will do a great job of isolating you from the roughest terrain you can find while those compact 650B wheels and fatter tyres will help keep you in control when things get rowdy and allow you to really throw the bike around. If your gravel riding is firmly focused on fast, fun off-road riding the Topstone Carbon 3 650B is the gravel bike for you!

Cannondale Topstone Carbon 3 650B

Already super-versatile, the inclusion of the alternatively sized 650B wheels adds another dimension to your gravel riding.

PARIS ROUBAIX WITH CERVELO AND JUMBO-VISMA

Our Ilkley store manager Bernie is back from an amazing weekend at Paris Roubaix! Bernie was invited by Cervelo to join the Jumbo-Visma support team and gain intimate access behind the scenes and on the road at the Queen of the Classics, Paris Roubaix.

On arriving at the Hell of the North, Bernie was granted access to the team’s pre-race preparation, commenting: ‘We were able to meet the support team at the riders hotel before the start of the race and gain an insight into the preparation that goes into the hardest single day race of the year.‘ Bernie then got to ride with one of the helpers in the team van, where they assisted with spare wheels and bottles through 3 pave sectors.

On seeing the race action up close, Bernie said: ‘The pave was much worse up close than you would ever imagine compared with watching on the TV – the speed the leaders came past was insane. Such a shame Wout punctured just after his attack, the team and back up crew were gutted after the finish but that’s bike racing, you need a bit of luck on your side to win the Paris Roubaix.

Bernie was also given the opportunity to delve into the technology being utilised at the hardest one-day race on the cycling calendar;

Bikes: All Jumbo-Visma riders were on the latest Cervelo Soloist aero bike
Tyres: 30mm Vittoria Corsa Pro
Pressure: 64psi in rear 62psi in the front
New inflation system? A couple of riders were using the tyre inflation system but not Wout, Christophe or Dylan.
Gearing: Sram x1 with 54 chainring with 10/28 cassette.

Overall, an incredible weekend of cycling action – huge thanks to Cervelo and Team Jumbo-Visma for the hospitality and insight.

CANNONDALE SUPERSIX EVO HI-MOD 2 – PRODUCT FEATURE

Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 2023

Cannondale recently launched their all-new 4th generation SuperSix EVO family of road bikes following a couple of months of speculation which saw multiple spy shots of the new model being ridden by EF Education-EasyPost professional cycling team. During that time there was plenty of speculation regarding the details of the new chassis which suggested a number of significant changes and improvements to the out-going 3rd generation EVO.

We put together a detailed product launch feature when the bikes finally went public, highlighting all of the features that helped make the new SuperSix EVO the ‘lightest fastest road bike available’ according to Cannondale. The all-new Gen 4 SuperSix was well received by almost everyone involved with road cycling, from pro racers, to industry insiders, consumers AND retailers. All of our Wheelbase staff were super-keen to see the new SuperSix EVO bikes in the flesh and happily we didn’t have to wait too long. Shortly after the global launch we received our very first drop of EVO’s and quickly got one built ready to be photographed by our Freelancer James Vincent; so let’s take a detailed look at the Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2…

Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 2023

The 4th generation SuperSix EVO boasts a magic mix of a low overall weight combined with slippery aerodynamics.

The SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 spec’d with an 11-speed Shimano Ultegra Di2 groupset sits high up in the new EVO range, just below the Hi-Mod 1. The range of Cannondale SuperSix EVO road bikes and framesets is split into three different sub-groups, categorised by their frame material and construction technique. At the very top of the tree is the stunning LAB71 SuperSix EVO (more on LAB71 at Wheelbase soon), then below that there’s the SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod bikes and finally the SuperSix EVO Carbon bikes.

Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 2023

This newest iteration of the SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod features plenty of improvements including increased comfort, reduced weight and improved aerodynamics.

The SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod frame seen here on the Hi-Mod 2 shaves over 100 grams from the conventional Carbon frame lower down the range. Cannondale replace multiple layers of intermediate modulus fibres with fewer layers of much stiffer high modulus fibres, this takes overall weight down while retaining all the stiffness and strength required for a responsive, brilliantly-handling race bike. It’s worth pointing out too, that the Hi-Mod carbon material, the construction technique and frame configuration all contribute to enhanced compliance where it’s needed, providing greater comfort during long hours spent in the saddle.

Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2023

The seatstays on the new SuperSix EVO have been dropped lower down the seat tube to increase compliance while improving aerodynamics.

One of the stand-out stats which came out of the recent launch of the new SuperSix EVO was a significant drop in frame weight which has been achieved at the same time as it becoming more aero. Cannondale made the SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 400 grams lighter than the previous version while almost matching their specialist aero road bike, the Cannondale SystemSix in terms of aerodynamic capacity, being within 10 watts of their most slippery aero bike. Each and every tube profile and frame angle on the SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 has been born out of careful analysis and tireless prototyping during the product development stage. Every tube profile on the SuperSix EVO is beautifully sculpted, with truncated aerofoil shaping to help cut through the wind more efficiently.

Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 2023

The tube profiles on the SuperSix EVO are all beautifully sculpted, featuring truncated aerofoil shaping.

The SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2’s super-sleek aerodynamic capabilities are further enhanced by the total integration of the bike’s frame, fork, handlebars, seat post and wheels. Integration has been a bit of a buzzword in road bike design over the last few years, typically referring to a seamless configuration of the bike’s cockpit, including fully concealed internal cables. There’s a real mix of integration solutions out there and a varied success-rate from the industry’s leading bike brands; happily Cannondale have hit the mark with their all-new SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod. Their clever approach to total integration really contributes to the bike’s aero aerodynamic efficiency, engineering the frame, fork, handlebars, wheels and seat post as one holistic system to significantly lower overall drag. Oh, and it looks stunning too, which is no small thing!

Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 2023

The SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 is fully integrated with frame, fork, handlebars, wheels and seat post designed as one holistic system.

If you’re familiar with the previous generation SuperSix EVO you’ll know that integration of the stem, headset and head tube along with the internal cables that ran through them relied upon a separate cavity moulded into the front of the headtube; this could look a little messy depending your choice of stem and/or the amount of headset spacers used and it also meant that there was a natural steering stop, meaning the turning circle could be compromised at slow, almost stationary speed.

Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2023

Cannondale’s Delta steerer tube design allows for seamless integration of the bike’s cables while keeping the frontal area slim and aerodynamic.

Cannondale have now introduced their Delta steerer tube design for the new Gen 4 SuperSix EVO allowing for seamless integration of the bike’s cables from the cockpit down into the frameset with an 1” 1/8th top bearing helping to decrease frontal area. The overall look is a nice, slim cockpit with integrated cables and conventional headtube dimensions AND there’s no steering stop on this configuration so you’ll be able to manoeuvre the bike more safely at slow speeds.

Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 2023

Viewed from the front the Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2’s aero proficiency is clear to see.

Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2023

The all-new integrated cockpit is more aesthetically pleasing and better executed than its predecessor thanks to Cannondale’s new Delta steerer tube design.

While the top of the range SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 1 features a one-piece carbon bar and stem the EVO Hi-Mod 2 we’re focused on here features an alloy Cannondale C1 Conceal stem, which is still a propriety part created specifically to work with the cockpit of the bike. The stem is matched with a Vision Trimax Carbon Aero handlebar; the internal brake hoses are neatly routed from the bar, to the underside of the stem and down into the specially designed headset spacers and headtube for a seamless, fully integrated cockpit. This is a nice setup and gives the advantage of a separate bar and stem allowing you to fine-tune your riding position even more.

Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 2023

The propriety Cannondale C1 Conceal stem and Vision Trimax Carbon Aero bar offer plenty of adjustment allowing you to fine tune your riding position.

Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2023

The SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2’s carbon Vision Trimax handlebar is profiled to cut through the air while being comfortable too.

There are so many nice details to consider on the new SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 1 with each one reflecting Cannondale’s laser-focus on designing and developing the lightest, most aerodynamic road bike possible. In an effort to make the bike even more aerodynamically efficient they created the new ReGrip Aero bottle cages paired and Gripper Aero water bottles; these new bottles and cages create a more streamlined profile in combination with the SuperSix EVO’s frame, improving aerodynamic efficiency thanks in no small part to the Gripper Aero bottle’s flat sides. Don’t panic though, conventional water bottles fit the cages too! So if you’re taking mid-race hand-ups in the feed zone there won’t be any compatibility issues.

The Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 includes a pair of Cannondale Gripper Aero Bottles & ReGrip Aero Cages.

The specially-profiled Gripper Aero Bottles work in combination with the SuperSix EVO frame to provide even more wind-cheating capabilities.

Another change from the previous generation SuperSix EVO is the threaded bottom bracket found on the all-new Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2. The previous Pressfit BB30 bottom bracket configuration (which in some cases could be prone to creaking) has gone, replaced with a conventional BSA 68mm threaded bottom bracket; so you’ll now be able to change your bottom bracket at home without the need for specialist tools or having to take time off the bike while you wait for your bike to be serviced at your local workshop. This is a trend we’re seeing across all leading bike brands on their high-end bikes and it’s certainly a welcome one with us.

Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 2023

This 4th-generation SuperSix boasts a BSA 68mm threaded bottom bracket, replacing the out-going pressfit BB30 bottom bracket.

Previous generation SuperSix EVO’s spec’d with a Shimano Di2 electronic groupset saw the system’s stored in the seatpost. That gen 3 seatpost was cylindrical in profile while the new gen 4 seatpost is a super-slim aerodynamic design meaning there’s no room for the Di2 battery. Cannondale have now located a new separate battery area just in front of the bottom bracket, accessed by removing a small, neat cover; this is another nice feature that makes battery replacement and/or removal much quicker and easier.

Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2023

There’s a new location for the Shimano Di2 battery, underneath the bottom bracket, easily accessed via this discrete plug.

The Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 is spec’d with Shimano’s brilliant Ultegra Di2 12-speed drivetrain. The configuration of the Ultegra Di2 groupset is semi-wireless; what this means in practice is that the shifter units are wireless sending a signal to the front and rear derailleurs which are wired together inside the frame, with both drawing power from the battery stored just in front of the bottom bracket. This set up eliminates the need for any electronic gear wires or traditional gear cables having to be routed through the bar, stem, headset and frame, leaving only the hydraulic brake hoses. This wireless cockpit looks so clean and simple on the SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 and the wired portion of the Shimano Di2 electronic gear system, connected to the internal battery actually means longer run times thanks to a more efficient central source of power.

Cannondale have spec’d the SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 with a cutting-edge Shimano Di2 12-speed electronic groupset.

Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 2023

Shimano’s Ultegra Di2 rear derailleur provides crisp, precise gear selection every time you shift.

Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 2023

The 12-speed wireless Shimano Di2 electronic shifters send a signal to the front and rear derailleurs in an instant for rapid shifting.

Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 2023

Shimano have squeezed 12 cogs into the rear cassette with an 11-30T range providing all the ratios you’ll need.

With racing and performance in mind Cannondale have selected the sort of gear ratios you’d expect to find on a race-ready road bike like the SuperSix EVO. Upfront there’s the great-looking Ultegra chainset featuring 52-36T chainrings combined with a close-ratio 12-speed cassette out back with ratios going from 11 teeth to 30 teeth, giving plenty of useful gear ratios at either end of the block. The 12-speed cassette helps to make the jumps from each available ratio smoother with a less drastic jump between them feeling good when you’re racing and want to stay on top of your gears.

Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 2023

Upfront there’s a great-looking Shimano Ultegra R8200 chainset with 52/36T chainrings.

Shimano spent some considerable time developing the latest version of their Ultegra hydraulic disc brakes. The R8170’s are more compact than their predecessors as well as being lighter and more rigid; while the Ultegra R8170 brakes are equally as powerful as the previous versions and feature just the right amount of lever-pull there’s actually more pad clearance, so you’ll enjoy a quieter ride with no potential for annoying brake rub. Cannondale have spec’d a slightly larger 160mm diameter rotor on the front and a smaller, lighter 140mm rotor on the back to save a little bit of weight without affecting braking performance.

Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 2023

A powerful Shimano Ultegra R8170 hydraulic brake caliper combined with a 160mm rotor upfront will keep in control on fast descents.

Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 2023

On the rear a Shimano Ultegra R8170 hydraulic caliper combined with a slightly smaller 140mm rotor provides reliable braking in all conditions.

Completing the ‘aerodynamic, fully-integrated, one-complete-system’ design approach to the SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 is Cannondale’s new HollowGram 50 R-SL wheelset; these superlight carbon wheels were developed in unison with the new 4th generation SuperSix EVO to provide enhanced aerodynamics. The super-aero HollowGram 50 R-SL wheels feature a 50mm deep, low-drag rim, bladed spokes and DT-Swiss 240 EXP rear hub internals and are built to fly up the hills while efficiently cutting through the air thanks to their undisputable velocity-maintaining aerodynamics.

Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 2023

Cannondale’s own propriety HollowGram 50 R-SL carbon wheelset is designed to work in unison with the SuperSix EVO frameset as one super-aero package.

When the range of 4th generation SuperSix EVO’s launched recently Cannondale were keen to highlight that this newest iteration no longer featured their previous AI Offset (Asymmetric Integration) principle which utilised an offset rear triangle and drivetrain. The offset shifted the rear hub and drivetrain 6mm to the right, with the benefits said to enable short chainstays and a rear wheel which was stiffer and stronger thanks to spoke tension and angles being equal on both sides. The downside of this principle? Wheelsets weren’t immediately interchangeable, with any after-market rear wheel needing to be re-dished before they could fit in the frame. Cannondale have been slowly phasing out their AI principle as each new model of bike is launched and happily for us all this SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 features conventional rear wheel spacing.

Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 2023

The Cannondale HollowGram rear hub features smooth-rolling DT Swiss 240 internals.

Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 2023

The HollowGram 50 R-SL wheels with sealed hubs are superlight as well as aerodynamic.

The new SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 boasts plenty of clearance for wider road tyres; with rims becoming wider, thanks to the now-firmly-established disc brake, rim profiles have changed, growing in width and allowing for wider tyres that increase their contact patch with the tarmac. Pro racers seem to have now settled on 28mm wide tyres as the standard, however the SuperSix EVO can comfortably accommodate a 30mm tyre with 6mm of tyre clearance making this bike even more versatile.

Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 2023

The SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 boasts plenty of tyre clearance, allowing you to fit tyres up to 30mm wide.

In its short life, since it was first raced by the pros in January 2023 the all-new 4th generation SuperSix EVO has quickly established itself as a super-versatile race-winning weapon which is equally capable of flying up the climbs or holding its speed on flatter terrain thanks to all of those brilliant aerodynamic design features.

Our very own road racing team Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli, (now the longest-running elite road racing team in the U.K.) have competed onboard multiple versions of the Cannondale SuperSix throughout the years. The team have really benefitted from a race bike which can handle anything the busy racing calendar can throw at them, such is the versatility and confidence-inspiring nature of the SuperSix. The all-new SuperSix EVO is clearly set to continue that trend with the addition of some significant improvements to performance. It’s a cliché to say it, but with its fully-integrated aero profile, cutting-edge Shimano Ultegra Di2 electronic groupset and superlight aero carbon wheels the Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 really is ‘ready to race right out of the box’.

Cannondale SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 2023

Cannondale’s SuperSix EVO Hi-Mod 2 is functionally brilliant and aesthetically beautiful, boasting all of the qualities we’d expect from a race-ready road bike.

LIGHTWEIGHT E-MOUNTAIN BIKES – EXPLAINED

Lightweight E-Mountain Bikes at Wheelbase

More and more bike brands are now launching lightweight e-mountain bikes; at our recent Wheelbase BIG Demo Weekend we took a detailed look at a selection of special lightweight e-mountain bikes from some of the best brands available at Wheelbase. Each brand has arrived at a different design solution, however they all share something in common; they’re all particularly light and incredibly discrete when it comes to looks (a double take is required to even realise they ARE e-mountain bikes) as well as being incredibly quiet.

Check out our video below where we talk to SCOTT, Orbea and TREK about the current lightweight e-mountain bikes within their respective range of bikes as well as the sort of drive-system and suspension configurations they have chosen to spec…

U.K. mountain biking legend Nick Craig from SCOTT gave us a detailed run-down of the newest lightweight e-mountain bike on the block – the SCOTT Lumen eRide featuring a compact 250W TQ Motor, 360WH internal battery and 130mm of rear suspension travel facilitated by their clever internal shock. Nick had brought his very own Lumen eRide to the BIG Demo weekend and was keen to share his own riding experience of this cutting-edge lightweight e-MTB; he also did a brilliant job of explaining how to customise how the Lumen rides to suit you and your own riding style using the TQ e-bike App.

Scott Lumen E-Ride

Nick Craig has been spending a lot of time riding the Lumen e-Ride and did a great job of explaining how to get the most out of the ride.

Scott Lumen E-Ride

With a compact TQ motor, slim internal battery and a brilliantly engineered internal rear shock the Lumen e-Ride looks so clean and uncluttered.

Scott Lumen e-Ride

The SCOTT Lumen e-Ride provides natural-feeling enhancement to your own pedalling input, allowing you to explore further in confidence.

Scott Lumen Fast Facts:

  • 250W TQ Motor
  • 360WH Internal Battery
  • 130MM Integrated Rear Shock
  • Optional 160WH External Battery (sold separately)

Lee Williams from Orbea talked us through the Orbea Rise lightweight e-MTB and did a great job of explaining their unique Rider Synergy (RS) concept. The design team wanted to deliver a new e-bike riding standard with a more natural feel, developing the RS motor in partnership with Shimano and modifying the EP8 e-MTB motor hardware to respond with more power when the rider pedals harder. Their unique RS firmware significantly changes the behaviour of the EP8 motor with a smoother power band and a more authentic amplification of the rider’s cadence input. We asked Lee what sort of customer the Orbea Rise lightweight e-MTB is best suited to; he suggested it’s for riders who are looking for the ride quality of a non-e-mountain bike, where they’re still able to throw the bike around and enjoy an agile ride while benefitting from a natural-feeling level of assistance.

Orbea Rise

A lightweight e-MTB with a more authentic ride feel, the Orbea Rise gives you just enough power without compromising your ride experience.

Orbea Rise Fast Facts:

  • 250W Shimano EP8-RS Motor
  • 360WH Internal Battery
  • 140MM Rear Shock
  • Optional 252WH External Battery (sold separately)

The Trek Fuel EXe took the e-mountain bike world by storm when it launched; with a classic case of ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ such was the compact nature of the motor and neat integration of the overall drive system. Mark Jaggard from Trek was at our Wheelbase BIG Demo Weekend with a whole fleet of lightweight Fuel EXe’s for customers to ride on our challenging South Lakes trails and they proved incredibly popular over the weekend. Like the Scott Lumen e-Ride the Fuel EXe features a TQ motor and a 360WH internal battery. Because of the super-compact nature of the TQ system the Trek engineers were able to duplicate geometry of their Fuel non-e-bike model, meaning that the ride quality of this agile trail bike is fantastic while benefitting from that extra pedal-assist when you need it.
