Bar-to-Bar Racing in the Big City

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

London Nocturne 2026

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli made the long trip south to the big city as elite road racing returned to the Square Mile for the London Nocturne. A full day of racing saw the technical circuit lined with large groups of spectators consisting of long-time fans of the sport and curious passers-by as cycling had its moment to shine on the busy streets of central London. With multiple competitions taking place throughout the day, including a Brompton race, a city bike race and even a penny farthing race the crowds continued to grow leading up to the elite men’s race which kicked off at 9pm as the sun began to set.

This stand-alone event was well positioned in the racing calendar just ahead of the busy British Cycling National Circuit Series and would be a good opportunity for the Wheelbase team to dust off their crit racing skills. A packed field of super-talented riders, which included international pros, national champions and former Olympians, would put our small team of three riders to the test on the mean streets of London.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli’s Tom Armstrong, the current Rapha Super-League leader and 2025 National Circuit Series overall winner came into the race with high ambitions on a technical course which would suit his wily style of racing and superb bike handling skills. The team’s star sprinter Tim Shoreman would position himself at the head of the race alongside teammate Aaron King to be ready mark breakaways and be on the front for a bunch sprint if that was how the race played out.

The action kicked off immediately with National Crit Champion Cameron Mason launching the first attack from the bunch. The technical nature of the city centre circuit meant that breakaway groups would be hard to catch once they’d escaped the pack and very quickly a small group formed. Over the following laps the race lead swapped multiple times as small groups of never more than four or five riders broke away and attempted to establish a stable gap to the chasing peloton.

As the race continued to string out a four-strong lead group finally formed and would ultimately contest the sprint for the win while Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli’s Tom Armstrong and Tim Shoreman battled hard to stay at the head of the chase group ready to contest the sprint for the remaining places. Elsewhere Aaron King’s race was affected by a loose shoe cleat which was a frustrating outcome for him on the night after showing good form early in the race. With the gap continuing to stretch out Tom Armstrong made one last attempt to pull the bunch across to the break but with the leaders now holding a minute’s advantage it was time for Armstrong to recalibrate and start to consider his overall lead in the Rapha Super-League.

With a magical mix of clever positioning, sublime bike handling and well-timed accelerations Tom was able to cross the line in 7th place consolidating his overall position in the Rapha Super-League with a 21point lead. The London Nocturne was a fantastic event with huge crowds and entertaining racing throughout the day and into the evening. The Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli team show great form going into the busy crit season and are ready to race again at the first round of the British Cycling National Circuit Series at the Colne Grand Prix in Lancashire on Tuesday the 16th of June, back in the north, on a more familiar circuit. We’re excited to see how they perform!

Missed the first round? No worries, you’ve got five more evenings of adventure to enjoy!

Open to all

Lanequest is a simple idea with endless possibilities: a two‑hour cycle‑orienteering challenge on quiet country lanes, bridleways and backroads. You choose your route, collect as many checkpoints as you can, and race the clock to get back before time runs out.

It’s low‑pressure, sociable and genuinely great fun — the kind of event where you’ll see families, seasoned riders, e‑bikers, club members and first‑timers all heading out together.

  • Six Tuesday evenings across June and July
  • Start anytime between 5.30pm and 7pm
  • Best four results count, so you don’t need to make every round
  • Suitable for all ages, all abilities and all bikes (including electric)

Whether you’re chasing points or just exploring new lanes with friends, Lanequest is built for everyone.

It’s Time To RAS Hard!

RAS TAILTEANN 2026

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli heads to Ireland with high hopes.

RAS TAILTEANN 2026

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli are back in action in Ireland at the Ras Tailteann between 20th-24th May.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli are sending a small but super-strong team of riders to the famous Ras Tailteann stage race in Ireland. The squad boasts a high level of collective experience which will serve them well during this demanding multi-stage race which plays out on some of Ireland’s most challenging roads. The talented squad features past Ras Tailteann stage winners, most notably Tim Shoreman who sprinted to win two stages of the 2025 edition along with experienced stage racers in the form of the two Toms who have both raced for continental teams in Europe.

RAS TAILTEANN 2026

Tom Armstrong, Mitchell McLaughlin, Aaron King, Tom Martin and Tim Shoreman bring strength and experience to the squad for Ras Tailteann.

Turning the clock back further to the 2024 edition of the Ras it’s worth noting that Shoreman took the overall Green Points jersey in another showing of strength and consistency which was backed up by some excellent teamwork throughout the race. Can he recapture that sort of consistency in 2026? Time will tell.

Ras Tailteann 2026

The tight-knit Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli team can be relied upon to work selflessly for one another during the five day race.

With team riders on good form and following two recent podium spots for Tom Armstrong at the Cicle Cassic and the Lincoln GP confidence is high as the lads board the ferry over to Ireland. Stu Reid will be behind the wheel of the Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli team car again, sharing his tactical nous in what promises to be a stage race packed full of drama thanks to a challenging parcours, unpredictable weather and a peloton packed full of national and international racing talent.

Follow the team’s fortunes on Instagram @wheelbase_cabtech_castelli and @wheelbase.co.uk

The 71st edition of Rás Tailteann will take place from May 20th to May 24th, 2026. See full details HERE

Stage 1: Portlaoise, Co Laois to Kilmallock, Co Limerick

(Distance: 161.6 KM)

Wednesday, May 20th, 2026

The race will get underway in Portlaoise before making its way to the historic Limerick town of Kilmallock which also hosted the Stage 1 finish in 2024 and produced a fantastic turnout of spectators.

The opening half of the stage will take place on mostly flat roads through the countryside of Laois and Tipperary. The race then tackles its first climbs of Rás Tailteann 2026, dipping into the Silvermines at Dolla. A further climb at Old Pallas on the run-in to Kilmallock is sure to shake things up.

A fast final 20 kilometres could allow things to come back together — or provide an opportunity for a decisive move.

Stage 2: Rathmore, Co Kerry to Banteer, Co Cork

(Distance: 182.9 KM)

Thursday, May 21st, 2026

Following a transfer to County Kerry, Stage 2 will start in Rathmore, close to the home of Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club, who have made great strides since their foundation.

A long and demanding day awaits, featuring six categorised climbs. A Category 3 climb before Kilgarvan opens the action, followed by a run into Kenmare and onward into West Cork.

The race will then take in the famous Tunnel Road / Caha Pass, before descending into Glengarriff. A further Category 3 climb follows before the long ascent to Gougane Gap.

Two additional Category 3 climbs on the approach to Banteer complete the day.

Stage 3: Mitchelstown, Co Cork to Enniscorthy, Co Wexford

(Distance: 155.6 KM)

Friday, May 22nd, 2026

Stage 3 departs from Mitchelstown and, while shorter and less mountainous on paper, history has shown that these are often the days that can turn the general classification upside down.

The route features mostly flat roads on a twisting and technical circuit, with just two Category 3 climbs along the way. However, the final challenge comes in the closing kilometre, with an uphill finish into Enniscorthy. Seconds gained or lost here could prove vital, and it is safe to say the final 3KM rule will not apply on this stage.

Stage 4: Carlow Town, Co Carlow to Baltinglass, Co Wicklow

(Distance: 141.6 KM)

Saturday, May 23rd, 2026

Rás Tailteann returns to Wicklow for the first time in eight years. Much of this route was last used during the 2018 edition.

A huge and difficult day awaits, with eight categorised climbs, including the two Category 1 ascents of Drumgoff / Shay Elliott Memorial and the Wicklow Gap.

A very fast final 20 kilometres on the N81 into Baltinglass may allow some regrouping after the mountain but it is likely to be a heavily reduced peloton contesting the stage win. Baltinglass previously hosted a memorable stage finish with Eddie Dunbar taking victory there in 2016. The Wicklow Mountains have always delivered epic Rás stages and all eyes will be on this one.

Stage 5: Carlow Town, Co Carlow to Dunboyne, Co Meath

(Distance: 142.4 KM)

Sunday, May 24th, 2026

(Including three laps of finishing circuit)

The grand finale starts in Carlow with a ceremonial roll-out before heading across mostly flat roads through Carlow and Kildare. The only classified climb is the Category 3 Hill of Allen, before the race heads towards Dunboyne.

Wheelbase Fred Whitton Challenge 2026

The Struggle climb ramps up the challenge of this year’s Fred!

Fred Whitton Challenge 2026

Sunday 10th of May saw over 2,000 road cyclists take on the grueling Fred Whitton Challenge sponsored by Wheelbase. Riders were treated to blue skies and cool temperatures giving them the perfect conditions for a big day out on the bike, with the ‘The Fred’ spanning 106 miles for this unique edition rather than the usual 112 miles because a route change due to the closure of Kirkstone Pass. Anyone who was fooled into a false sense of security because of the slightly reduced distance would have a rude awakening as the route was adjusted to take on the infamous climb of The Struggle. Rising out of Ambleside with gradients up to 24% this grueling climb came only 3 miles into the ride and was a timely reminder to all of the riders that they were in for a very demanding day.

FRED WHITTON CHALLENGE 2026

The Fred Whitton Challenge continues to grow in popularity every year with a record 6,000 entries for the 2026 edition. Of the 2,500 places available organisers reported that 1,900 participants were first timers which is testament to how much the Fred has become a bucket list event on the Sportive calendar. With national and international riders traveling far and wide to be at the start line and with a mix of abilities across the field every rider who successfully completed the event would go home with their own stories of a very personal challenge.

FRED WHITTON CHALLENGE 2026

Taking on the iconic climbs of The Struggle, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter, Hardknott, Wrynose and Blea Tarn the fastest riders on the day would complete the route in under 6 hours with Josh Hall coming in with the fastest time of the day in 5hrs 23mins 14secs. For most though the Wheelbase Fred Whitton Challenge would be an all-day epic with some finishing times exceeding 11hrs.

FRED WHITTON CHALLENGE 2026

Why is this iconic cycling challenge called ‘The Fred’? The ride exists because of Fred Whitton from the /Lakes Road Club. His untimely death inspired others to take on this extraordinary route in his memory. Today the event raises a considerable amount of money for selected charities, with an average of just over £100,000 going to MacMillan Nurses every year. Over the last few years, the Fred Whitton Challenge has donated £608,000 to the two Air Ambulances in Cumbria, The Mountain Rescue and various youth cycling projects.

Wheelbase is proud to lend their support to the Fred Whitton Challenge and would to thank all the volunteers who work so hard every year to make it run so smoothly.

FRED WHITTON CHALLENGE 2026

Congratulations to our Wheelbase supported riders who got round in some impressive times:

Kevin Moore 5hrs 55mins 29secs 1/564 Ages 50-59

CUBE AMS HYBRID ONE44 C:68 – PRODUCT LAUNCH

Introducing the all-new AMS Hybrid One44 C:68 e-mountain bike! Yes, CUBE are back with an exciting range of four new lightweight e-MTB’s featuring the hottest e-bike motor available right now – the compact, lightweight and powerful Bosch Performance SX.

Introducing the all-new CUBE AMS Hybrid One44 C:68 e-mountain bike!

The AMS Hybrid One44 C:68 boasts an ultra-sleek silhouette that has you second-guessing as to whether it’s an e-bike at all, with the four bikes in the range all featuring a superlight frame constructed from CUBE’s premium C:68X® carbon fibre for a weight of just 2100g. Factor in that compact new Bosch SX motor system delivering a stunning 55Nm maximum torque combined with 600w of maximum power and you’ve got a super-light e-MTB that climbs, descends and handles just like a non-e-mountain bike but with all the power and efficiency of a modern e-MTB.

The AMS Hybrid One44 C:68 features the hottest e-bike motor available right now – the Bosch Performance SX.

Meeting the design brief of the ultralight Bosch-powered AMS Hybrid One44 C:68 full-suspension bike wasn’t easy. To hit that sweet spot the designers and engineers at CUBE chose their most advanced C:68X® carbon material for maximum strength and stiffness at the lowest weight possible. They neatly incorporated the sleek Bosch CompactTube 400 battery into the down tube, positioning it as close to the Bosch SX motor as possible for a low centre of gravity, helping improve bike handling while storing an efficient 400Wh of power to facilitate longer rides.

That ultra-sleek silhouette that has you second-guessing as to whether it’s an e-bike at all!

The Bosch CompactTube 400 internal battery is neatly positioned near the motor in the down tube for a low centre of gravity.

The Bosch Drive Unit Performance SX is compact and powerful producing 55Nm of maximum torque.

Still suffering with range anxiety? No dramas; there’s also an option to run an additional PowerMore-ready battery that fits neatly into your bottle cage (sold separately) for an additional 250Wh of range boost. Other notable features include internal cable routing that complements the frame’s sleek silhouette and a lightweight direct mount chain guide that stops your chain from unshipping when riding gets particularly rowdy. With an angle adjustable headset allowing you to fine-tune the AMS Hybrid One44 C:68’s to suit your riding style and the type of terrain you typically encounter it’s a versatile modern trail bike that just happens to have enviable amounts of pedal-assist secretly stowed away within that conventional-looking frame.

You’ll be able to fine-tune the AMS Hybrid One44 C:68’s geometry to suit your own riding style.

There are four models in the small sub-range of AMS Hybrid One44 C:68’s e-MTB’s. Two have been built for speed and efficiency, when you want to cover as much ground as possible and climb gradients that would have had you previously off the bike and pushing. The other two options have been spec’d to handle the increased demands of more rowdy trail riding when you are really pushing the bike to its limits downhill before quickly heading back to the top of your favourite trails thanks to that powerful but compact Bosch Performance SX motor. Check out an overview of each bike below…

CANNONDALE MOTERRA SL – PRODUCT LAUNCH

High on power, low on weight! THIS is the all-new Cannondale Moterra SL e-mountain bike.

Until today, mountain bikers needed to make a tough decision . Choose a full-power, big range e-MTB to conquer any incline and take on epic all-day rides, but accept a heavier overall weight and compromised agility out on the trail. Alternatively choose a lightweight e-MTB for a playful more natural-feeling ride but know that you’re going to have less power and less range, leaving you guessing if you’ll be able to match your full-power ride buddies. That was the quandary, until today! Introducing the all-new Cannondale Moterra SL, the lightest full-power e-mountain bike ever*.

*eMTB with drive unit capable of at least 85Nm of torque and battery capacity of at least 600Wh.

Yes, the designers at Cannondale have been able to create the first 150mm trail bike to pack 85Nm of torque, 600W+ of peak output, and 601Wh of power into an e-mountain bike weighing as little as 19.3kg / 42.5lbs. With the Moterra SL you can finally have your cake and eat it; enjoy a confidence-inspiring full-power ride matched with lightweight agility out on the trails.

It’s important to reinforce the point – this was a TOUGH brief for the Cannondale designers and engineers. There’s a good reason why the market isn’t already flooded with lightweight full-power e-mountain bikes, hitting that sweet spot required Cannondale to work closely with motor manufacturers Shimano to custom tune the lightweight EP801 motor as well as tapping in to their own design and production expertise gained over decades.

Cannondale have blended their superlight carbon technology from the Scalpel XC race bikes with the suspension kinematics and agile trail geometry of rowdy trail bikes like their Habit and Jekyll. They’ve married that frame up with a sensitively custom-tuned Shimano motor and a whole new custom internal battery that packs more watts per kilo than any other e-MTB on the market. The unmatched power-to-weight ratio of the all-new Moterra SL is what makes the ride so much fun!

Moterra SL Fast Facts:

  • DRIVE UNIT: Specially Tuned Shimano EP801
  • BATTERY: Custom High-Energy Density Internal 601Wh
  • RANGE: Up to 70km (43mi)
  • WHEEL / TIRE SIZE: (F) 29×2.5″ / (R) 27.5×2.4″
  • TRAVEL: (F) 160mm, (R) 150mm

We Love it Because…

It’s got ‘Full Boost’ capability:

Some lightweight e-MTB’s on the market have had to compromise their full-power capability. Not so with the Moterra SL thanks to their custom-tuned version of Shimano’s EP801 drive unit – the lightest motor on the market which is able to produce those BIG watts we’re all looking for. With 85Nm of torque and 600+ watts of max output the Moterra SL brings full boost to the lightweight e-mountain bikes for the first time.

The motor ride modes give a more authentic ride experience:

By custom tuning the Shimano EP801 motor Cannondale have been able to create an e-mtb that amplifies your pedaling input in a more natural feeling way, closer replicating an analogue non-e-mountain bike. The four different levels of boost let you choose between maximum efficiency and range, instantaneous power, or a magic blend of both.

It’s more agile and handles like a traditional trail bike:

That magic mix of the lightweight, custom-tuned drive system, carbon frame and modern trail geometry gives a sublime, confidence-inspiring ride quality. With an adjustable head angle that’s slack enough for a DH bike, a long reach and a steep seat angle the Moterra SL rides more like Cannondale’s Habit or Jekyll analogue mountain bikes than what you’d typically expect from an e-MTB.

Key Features:

Shimano EP801 Drive Unit:

Shimano’s premium e-MTB system is lightweight, durable, and powerful. The motor produces 85Nm of torque and 600 watts of max power, with custom-engineered ride modes for rider-friendly versatility.

Custom Cannondale 601Wh Battery:

This compact, custom battery features special cells which store more power per kilo than comparative-sized batteries, packing 601 watt-hours into an internal battery weighing just 3.1kg including the internal wiring harness.

Custom-Tuned Ride Modes:

Cannondale have custom-tuned the Shimano EP801 motor with specially designed assist modes to suit the demands of contemporary trail riding. Choose ECO mode for efficient assistance during all-day adventures, TRAIL mode for mid-power input that matches your friend group on lightweight e-bikes, BOOST mode for shredding trails with full-power e-bikes fans and TURBO mode for straight-up rowdy full-power fun.

Proportional Response

The ‘Proportional Response’ design principal seen on other bikes in the Cannondale range features here on the all-new Moterra SL too. Important aspects such as suspension layout, geometry and even the length of the chain stays are all customised to fit the overall proportion of each bike’s size; this means that regardless of the size of your bike the handling and suspension performance remain the same.

Run the Moterra SL in Mullet or full 29er configuration:

The Moterra’s ‘Flip Chip’ allows you to choose between running your bike as a ‘mullet’ with the 29 inch front/27.5-inch-rear wheel setup, for an agile and playful ride quality, or with 29-inch wheels at both ends, for maximum traction and rolling efficiency. All Moterra SL models come in the mullet configuration as standard.

FlexPivot:

Cannondale’s popular ‘Flexpivot’ rear triangle configuration, seen on many of their full suspension bikes feature on the Moterra SL too. These carbon flex points positioned on the chainstays just in front of the rear axle reduce overall weight, eliminate maintenance and help to facilitate the Moterra’s four-bar suspension design which provides enhanced traction and control on the trail.

Adjustable Headset:

The Moterra SL’s adjustable headset cups facilitate a 1.2-degree range of angle adjustment at the headtube. Go slack for increased stability at speed or set it steeper for enhanced agility on technical terrain.
