PARIS ROUBAIX WITH CERVELO AND JUMBO-VISMA

Our Ilkley store manager Bernie is back from an amazing weekend at Paris Roubaix! Bernie was invited by Cervelo to join the Jumbo-Visma support team and gain intimate access behind the scenes and on the road at the Queen of the Classics, Paris Roubaix.

On arriving at the Hell of the North, Bernie was granted access to the team’s pre-race preparation, commenting: ‘We were able to meet the support team at the riders hotel before the start of the race and gain an insight into the preparation that goes into the hardest single day race of the year.‘ Bernie then got to ride with one of the helpers in the team van, where they assisted with spare wheels and bottles through 3 pave sectors.

On seeing the race action up close, Bernie said: ‘The pave was much worse up close than you would ever imagine compared with watching on the TV – the speed the leaders came past was insane. Such a shame Wout punctured just after his attack, the team and back up crew were gutted after the finish but that’s bike racing, you need a bit of luck on your side to win the Paris Roubaix.

    Bernie was also given the opportunity to delve into the technology being utilised at the hardest one-day race on the cycling calendar;

Bikes: All Jumbo-Visma riders were on the latest Cervelo Soloist aero bike
    Tyres: 30mm Vittoria Corsa Pro
Pressure: 64psi in rear 62psi in the front
New inflation system? A couple of riders were using the tyre inflation system but not Wout, Christophe or Dylan.
Gearing: Sram x1 with 54 chainring with 10/28 cassette.

Overall, an incredible weekend of cycling action – huge thanks to Cervelo and Team Jumbo-Visma for the hospitality and insight.

    Eagle & Child Santa Ride

So where to start with this one, the beginning is usually a good start and not to mention it is the most wonderful ride of the year! Many will agree.

So what is the Santa ride may you ask! Well, it’s an annual charity ride from the Eagle and Child Inn situated in Staveley, a cycling friendly pub come bed and breakfast which welcomes muddy tyres, boots and paws! Serving hearty food and also local ales.

So what does the Santa ride involve I hear you ask. Well, there does seem to be a dress code and it that is made up of either a Santa costume or anything associated with Christmas, there was around 50 plus Santas and I lost count of how many reindeer were riding bikes! Talented reindeer to say the least!

The ride starts from the eagle and child, pedalling north towards Kentmere. The weather couldn’t of been better. A cool clear night with a full moon illuminating the fells beyond. Absolutely bliss.

The ride climbs up Hall Lane, a B road that inevitably turns into a bridleway half way up. This is a steep pull and one that got santas legs well and truly warmed up by the time we reached the gate to head across part of the Fell called green quarter. Here you pass through a couple of becks, for those of you that are not familiar with the Cumbrian or northern dialect a beck is described the common term for a brook in northern areas, beck often refers, in literature, to a brook with a stony bed or following a rugged course, typical of such areas.

After slipping and sliding down the fell it was back to the road for the mile or so to Kentmere village hall for half way refreshments. I have failed to mention up till this point that this ride was for a 6:30pm start off so it was all done on the dark and everyone lit up like Christmas trees. Refuelled and ready for the second leg is was done to Kentmere Hall to the climb up the descent that all us Wheelbasers love flying down usually.

From the top it’s a smooth flowing ride to the top of our other favourite descent of another local ride of 3 rivers this ride gets its name from crossing 3 rivers, park beck, black beck and Nuttera beck.

Now, I’m usually one for keeping in the reigns but I know this descent relatively well so I thought there’s generally no alternative but to just send it and have some fun however with its being a grassy trail for the first third of the funny there was plenty of sideways action, plenty to keep you busy on the bars. The remainder is a shale track which flows super fast and is plenty of fun even in the dark!

Once the fun was over it was a short road ride back to the pub for refreshments and a well deserved pint or two!

    FINN’S PODIUM AT LANCASTER GP

Huge congratulations to Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli rider Finn Crockett who put in a stellar ride to take third place at the Lancaster GP at the weekend.

The first round of the men’s national road series took in eleven laps of a hilly circuit to the south-east of Lancaster, finishing in Williamson Park in the city centre. The early pace was set by UCI Continental teams Canyon DHB Sungod and Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling, making it extremely difficult for a definitive break to establish itself. By lap seven a handful of riders got away from a reduced main bunch in what would be the race-winning move.

Finn Crockett makes the selection as the winning break goes clear.

Despite repeatedly attacking each other on the final climb, the four escapees came into the final kilometre together to battle it out on the finishing drag up to the Ashton Memorial in Williamson Park. Josh Whitehead (Team PB Performance) proved strongest to sprint for the win with Jacob Scott (Canyon DHB Sungod) coming home in second and our own Finn Crockett taking the final spot on the podium. Finn’s third place comes off the back of an impressive run of results at the Tour Series, showing he’s in good form and looking strong ahead of next week’s Ryedale Grand Prix.

There was also an impressive ride from another one of our young riders, Logan Maclean, as he continues his remarkable comeback from a life-threatening road accident last year. Logan rode well in the bunch and looked strong in the first National prem of the season, boding well ahead of a block of big races over the coming weeks.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli rider Logan Maclean well placed in the main bunch.

Another notable and exceptional ride was from local hero and former Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli rider Ben Granger (Zappi Racing), who came in ahead of a reduced peloton to take fifth place on the day on a course he knows very well.

Ben Granger (centre-left) showed he’s in good form with a strong finish.

Next up for the riders is the Ryedale Grand Prix in Ampleforth, North Yorkshire which takes place next week.

A helpful guide to Kids Bikes

    Kids Bikes Buying Guide

Everyone remembers their first bike – that first ride and that feeling of freedom. From early-years balance bikes to trail-ready mountain bikes, kids’ bikes are all about building confidence and having fun.

Equipped with child friendly components, wheels and size specific frames, there are bikes for kids of all ages – from toddlers through to teenage riders.

Unlike adult bikes, where sizing is determined by seat tube length, kids bikes are sized by their wheel size. The table below will act as a general guide for sizing based on a child’s age and height and will determine which size is most suitable.

    Kids Bike Size Guide

Rider Height Age Suggested Wheel Size
    86 – 102cm 2-4 years Balance Bikes and 12”
    99 – 117cm 3-6 years 14” and 16”
    114 – 132cm 5-8 years 20”
    127 – 150cm 7-10 years 24”
    146 – 170cm 10+ 26 and 27.5”

Balance Bikes and 12″ Wheels (Age 2 – 4 years)

    Kids Balance Bikes

Suitable for riders up to 4 years old, balance bikes are the gateway to life on two wheels for the youngest riders. Balance bikes don’t come with pedals or gears and are propelled and stopped with the rider’s feet, reducing the number of things a child needs to think about when they take to two wheels. Taking away the complications of a drivetrain system allows the toddler to focus solely on learning how to balance and steer the bike.

Equipped with 10 or 12″ wheels, a balance bike such as the Trek Kickster or Specialized Hotwalk will be the perfect platform for a toddler to get to grips with moving around on two wheels.

    14 and 16″ Wheels (Age 3 – 6 years)

    Kids 16" Wheel Bikes

After mastering the balance bike and aged between 3 to 6 years old it’s now time for your child to make the step up to a first pedal bike. At this stage kids’ bikes begin to resemble adult’s bike with the introduction of gears, pedals and brakes. The gearing on these bikes tends to feature a single speed setup for simplicity and ease of use. The majority of bikes for children of this age are designed as multi purpose bikes with features allowing for riding on tarmac as well as light off-road use such as bridleways and canal paths.

The Cube Cubie 160 and Frog 48 come spec’d with 16″ wheels and are available in an array of eye-catching colours with a host of child-friendly features.

    20″ Wheels (Age 5 – 8 years)

    Kids 20" Wheel Bikes

Welcome to the world of gears and the potential to explore further on two wheels. Kids’ 20″ wheeled bikes open up new avenues for a child to explore with confidence inspiring frames and features that tailor bikes to a more specific style of riding. Bikes will come equipped with features such as front suspension for more comfort and the ability to ride off-road trails. A wider range of gears will give the rider more scope to tackle varied terrain both on and off-road.

For the aspiring mountain biker there’s the Cannondale Kids Trail 20 or Trek Roscoe 20, both built around high quality frames that will last and equipped with reliable components and wide tyres for taking on easy forest trails.

    24″ Wheels (Age 7 – 10 years)

The final step before a child becomes a teenager and starts the transition towards adult bikes. Bikes equipped with larger 24″ wheels take on many trickle down features from a manufacturers range of adult bikes and become more specific to the different types of riding. Off-road bikes will feature front suspension, wider, treaded tyres and favourable gearing for tackling gnarly terrain. Whereas bikes that focus on paved riding and bridleways resemble adult hybrid bikes with narrower tyres and a rigid front fork.

Available in two colour options, the Cannondale Kids Quick 24 is perfect for building confidence on cycle paths and bridleways. For young mountain bikers there’s the Cube Acid 240 Disc, equipped with disc brakes and wide-ranging gears this is a great option for building skills on the trails.

    26″ & 27.5″ Wheels (Age 10 years and above)

    Kids 26" Wheel Bikes

As children become young teenagers their options open up even more and bikes become more specialised. A 24″ bike offers much of the same tech, features and benefits of an adult bike but built around a slightly smaller wheel size. The gear system will be similarly optimised for either road or off-road riding and frame geometry will be filtered down for smaller riders. Road bikes of this size feature drop handlebars and a wide range of gears and 24″ mountain bikes will be equipped with front and sometimes rear suspension along with gears ready for steep inclines and technical descents.

A 24″ wheel road bike such as the Frog Road 67 is perfect for the budding roadie and features child-specific handlebars and shorter cranks with a spin-friendly 34T chainring. For youngsters looking to do some serious off-road riding there’s the Whyte 405, a scaled-down version of Whyte’s trail adult mountain bikes, which will inspired confidence  and build skills on forest trails and singletrack.

    Whyte G-170C RS – MBUK BOTY 2020

Presenting MBUK’s Enduro Bike of the Year for 2020 – the Whyte G-170C RS

The G-170C RS took the crown ahead of 9 of the other best enduro bikes on the market, coming out on top as it ‘consistently delivered a confident ride but always managed to keep things fun and lively.’

The RS uses the same highly developed frame as the Works bike, as used by the International EWS race team. The 29er wheels contribute to this bike being one of the fastest Whyte has ever produced.

This bike is ready for anything you want to throw at it, from hard-core trail riding to EWS Enduro racing. With its open front triangle design it is possible to fit various options of rear shock including coil shocks and still carry a full size water bottle. The G-170 platform is designed around the Whyte’s performance-enhancing Optimised Trail Offset geometry which also features the most compact seat-tubes possible on all sizes – meaning riders can choose the size with the reach they prefer, and simply adjust the seat-post to fit.
