WHYTE E-LYTE E-MOUNTAIN BIKES – IN STOCK NOW!

Whyte E-Lyte E-Mountain Bike

24.01.24 Update: Whyte E-Lyte lightweight e-mountain bikes now available in store and online at Wheelbase…

Whyte Bikes are back in a big way! After grabbing the attention of the cycling industry and wider social media audience earlier this year at Eurobike when they revealed a prototype carbon fibre e-MTB, featuring a brand new compact and lightweight Bosch motor they have now finally launched a small collection of three Whyte E-Lyte e-mountain bikes! One of mountain biking’s worst kept secrets, with bikes hiding in plain sight, can now be poured over in our latest product launch feature as we take a closer look behind one of the hottest, most highly anticipated e-MTB of recent times.

Whyte E-Lyte E-Mountain Bike

Whyte Bikes are back in a big way with the E-Lyte!

At the heart of these capable new Whyte trail bikes is a completely new lightweight, compact motor from Bosch (we take a closer look at the motor further down this feature), which is a significant piece of tech that customers, retailers and bike manufacturers have all been speculating on for some time. As more and more bike brands began to launch their own lightweight e-bike options featuring motors from other manufacturers the expectation grew regarding what Bosch would develop in answer to the trend for smaller, lighter drive systems.

Whyte E-Lyte E-Mountain Bike

Whyte are first to the party with the all-new Bosch Performance SX motor.

Humans, what are we like?! We always want the best of everything don’t we? First off there was the quest for the fastest, most powerful and efficient e-mountain bikes available; powering you over any obstacle in your way while carrying you further into your longest ride without any concern for running out of battery power before the end of your ride. Then we all began talking about compromised ride quality and the gradual move away from natural-feeling trail bikes, with the extra weight of a typical e-MTB taking away some of the bike’s agility out on the trails.

No problem, said the bike brands! In response they began to develop lightweight e-mountain bikes featuring smaller, lighter e-bike drive systems which took up less room, allowing designers play around with frame geometry more freely and decrease overall weight to produce bikes that felt more natural and capable on even the tightest, most technical trails. But there was a problem, smaller lighter batteries meant less range capacity and lighter less powerful motors meant significant mis-matches in power on those mixed e-MTB social rides.

Whyte E-Lyte

There’s 3 models to choose from in the small E-Lyte range.

It seemed there was a choice; pick a lightweight e-MTB and enjoy the thrill of an agile trail bike but accept that battery range and power is compromised, or go ‘full-fat’ with the most powerful and efficient options, resigning yourself to the fact that some of the ride qualities you enjoy on your non-e-bike may not transfer to your motor-assisted option. Until now!…

Yes, Whyte have created an e-mountain bike that’s fast, light, agile AND powerful; with the help of that superlight Bosch Performance SX motor their small range of E-Lytes have magically combined all of the very best ride qualities an ‘acoustic’ non-e-mountain bike with the power and efficiency of those more typical full-fat e-MTB’s. With the lightest E-Lyte 140 Works model weighing in at just 16.4kg (size medium) and featuring 55Nm of torque, 600W of peak power, and a total combined battery capacity of 650Wh the new E-Lyte has the power to keep up with your ‘full-fat e-MTB’ mates and the battery range to take your social rides even further with no concerns.

Whyte E-Lyte E-Mountain Bike

Whyte have created an e-mountain bike that’s fast, light, agile AND powerful!

With a lightweight, tough carbon fibre chassis the E-Lyte boasts the kind of modern, progressive trail geometry that we’ve come to expect from a British bike brand which has cut its teeth on the unforgiving U.K. singletrack trails we all love so much. The E-Lyte’s sophisticated suspension configuration includes Whyte’s ‘Shape.it Link V2’ allowing you to adjust the bike’s geometry to suit your preferred riding style and terrain.

There’s three different models available, with two featuring 150mm of travel upfront and 142mm of travel on the rear. The E-Lyte 140 Works, Whyte’s lightest, most cross-country-focused model features 140mm of travel upfront and 135mm on the rear making it a great option for those of you looking for an even more efficient shorter-travel trail bike capable of taking your rides further into the wilderness on one charge.

We’ve included the full specifications of all three models available at the bottom of this feature. Read on for more information on Bosch’s brilliant new Performance Line SX motor and look out for the all-new Whyte E-Lyte arriving at Wheelbase in December 2023, available to buy online and in store.

A lightweight carbon chassis, compact drive system and sophisticated suspension configuration combine to make up the agile E-Lyte.

The all-new Bosch Performance Line SX Motor:

All three of the Whyte E-Lyte e-mountain bikes feature the brand new lightweight Bosch Performance Line SX Motor, which has been greatly anticipated by industry insiders and customers alike, with all of the big brands queuing up to spec it on their own bikes. This time, however, Whyte were first to the party with this small range of superlight e-MTB’s boasting Bosch’s lightest, most compact motor yet; the SX motor has a peak power output of 600W with 55Nm of torque all neatly packaged into a weight of 2Kg.

The new Performance Line SX motor is paired with Bosch’s new CompactTube 400Wh internal battery, also weighing 2kg for a total drive system weight of just 4kg. All bikes in the range also include the option to fit an additional 250Wh PowerMore range extender (sold separately) that can be carried in the water bottle cage, bringing the total battery capacity to 650Wh and helping negate any potential range anxiety you might have on longer rides.

The new Bosch Performance Line SX motor really could be the ultimate e-bike motor and is certainly going to play a massive part in reshaping our expectations of a modern e-mountain bike. Noticeably compact, this small motor has freed up the Whyte designers to design their perfect trail bike around it, while keeping the centre of gravity nice and low. Bosch have constructed the motor’s housing from Magnesium to lower overall weight and, perhaps even more significantly, they have been able to decrease pedaling resistance by a whopping 50% for a more efficient and natural feel when the motor cuts off as it passes it’s legally permitted speed limit.

Just like Bosch’s other top of the range motors the new SX’s drive system includes the option to adjust settings through the brand’s app, fine tuning the ride to suit you. The Performance Line SX also includes a new ‘Sprint’ mode which is said to enhance your pedaling input more naturally as you increase your cadence and hold your speed closer to the motor’s legal cut-off.

Whyte E-Lyte E-Mountain Bike

Compact, particularly light and featuring 50% less pedal resistance the all-new Bosch Performance Line SX motor boasts a more natural feel.

2024 NATIONAL CYCLO-CROSS CHAMPS – RACE REPORT

The Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli Cyclo-cross team came together for a great showing and collective success at the 2024 British National Cyclo-Cross Championships at Callendar Park, Falkirk in Scotland, with all of our riders placing highly in their respective race categories.

The Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli team were at the sharp end of the men’s Elite race.

On a super-technical course which demanded high levels of skill as well as a well-timed peak in form the team placed 4 riders in the top 20 of the Elite National Championships. In a race which saw international rider Cameron Mason retain his National Champs title our highest-placed rider Callum Laborde took an excellent 10th place overall while finishing 5th in the under 23 sub-category. Joe Smith and Flynn Gregory were not far behind in 12th and 13th overall respectively while seasoned campaigner Giles Drake consolidated another successful season with 19th place.

Callum Laborde took an excellent 10th place in the Elite race.

A strong ride from Joe Smith left him in 12th position at the chequered flag.

Flynn Gregory finished just behind his teammate to take 13th overall in the Elite race as well as 7th in the U23 sub-category.

Giles Drake completed another consistent season, finishing just inside the top 20 at the National Champs.

Ishbel Strathdee raced strongly in the Women’s Elite/U23 category, a field of riders which included multiple international racers and former national champions including Anna Kay who took the win and Nikki Brammeier who was making a return to racing after starting a family. Wheelbase’s Ishbel would go on to secure an excellent 15th place overall in this demanding race.

Ishbel lined up against a very talented field of UK elite women and came away with an excellent 15th place.

Elsewhere, in the Vet40 race our defending National Champion Lewis Craven was unable to repeat his win of last season, but still took an excellent 2nd place in a field stacked with the very best of racing talent from the past 20 or so years of UK racing. Local fan favourite Davie Lines wasn’t far behind finishing in an excellent 5th place in front of a home crowd.

Defending Vet 40 National Champ Lewis Craven in action.

Foot out, flat out. Lewis makes short work of a tricky off-camber section.

Scottish rider Davie Lines got plenty of cheers at his home race.

Lewis Craven finished the Vet40 race in an excellent 2nd place!

Lewis Craven takes the silver medal at the National Cyclo-Cross Championships.

Lewis signing off the ‘Cross season in style. Cheers!

Out Vet50 racer Dave Haygarth took another quality top 20 placing in his race, with 14th place completing a curtailed season which saw him coming late into the fold following a long-term injury. Unfortunately Elsie Haygarth was unable to start her U16 race following a recent bout of illness, but was there in a supportive role in a cycling discipline that boasts a tight network of friends and family.

Dave Haygarth, enjoying the technical nature of the Falkirk course.

Dave would finish in an excellent 14th place in the Vet50 category.

We’d like to thank the Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli team for another great season of racing, tirelessly representing us all over the UK. HUGE thanks to all of our team helpers who work hard behind the scenes to keep the wheels turning in what is unarguably the dirtiest, grittiest, MUDDIEST cycling discipline of them all!

2024 BRITISH NATIONAL CYCLO-CROSS CHAMPIONSHIPS – PREVIEW

Our Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli cyclo-cross team round out another busy season of racing this weekend as they head to the 2024 British National Cyclo-Cross Championships, being held in Scotland for the first time at the scenic Callendar Park in Falkirk.

The National Cyclo-Cross Championships comes to Scotland for the fist time!

The demanding Falkirk race venue successfully staged a round of the National Trophy Cyclo-Cross series last year, with the course proving popular with racers and spectators alike thanks to its technical sections and the super-steep challenge appropriately titled ‘The Wall’. With fast descents and difficult off-camber sections this course will favour technically gifted riders able to steal back time at key points of each lap.

The infamous ‘Wall’ will sap valuable energy from racers on every lap.

We have a long list of Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli riders competing across multiple categories over the two days of racing at Callendar Park. The Elite race on Saturday sees six of our racers competing, with Giles Drake coming into the race with good form following his top 10 placing at the final round of the National Trophy Series last weekend. Our talented Under 23 racers will no-doubt be at the sharp end of the race and Vet 40 racer Lewis Craven will be using the Elite race on Saturday as a final tune-up before he defends his National Vet 40 Championship title in Sunday’s race.

Giles Drake is coming into the National Cyclo-Cross Championships with good late-season form.

Vet 50 racer Dave Haygarth will be in action on Saturday too, hoping for a good result on slightly fresher legs than his competitors, having coming into the Cyclo-Cross season a little late due to injury. On Sunday morning Dave will swap his skinsuit and race shoes for waterproofs and wellies as he pits for his hard-racing daughter Elsie Haygarth, who is looking to take advantage of her technical riding skills on this tricky course as she competes in the Under 16 category.

Dave Haygarth enjoyed racing at Callendar Park last season and is looking forward to taking on the technical course again.

Elsie Haygarth will race against a stacked field of racing talent in the Under 16 category on Sunday.

Sunday afternoon sees our current Vet National Champion and former World Champion Lewis Craven line up against a stacked field of racing-talent to defend his National Champs jersey which he won last year at our ‘Local National Cyclo-Cross Championships’ just down the road from Wheelbase HQ at the popular Westmorland venue.

Lewis Craven became National Vet 40 Champion in last year’s race; can he defend the jersey in 2024?

The technical Falkirk course will favour Lewis Craven’s technical riding skills; we hope to see him on the podium again this year!

Lewis will be joined by teammate and local legend Davie Lines, who will receive some of the biggest cheers of the weekend, being one of the most recognisable faces in Scottish Cyclo-Cross and Road Racing.

Local hero Davie Lines will be in action on one of his favourite Cyclo-Cross courses and is bound to have lots of trackside support.

Why not come and cheer on our fantastic Wheelbase riders in Falkirk and experience the thrill of cyclo-cross racing in a vibrant, family-friendly atmosphere! You can also watch the elite races live from 11:20am on Saturday on the BBC Sport website, BBC Sport app and BBC iPlayer.

WAHOO KICKR MOVE – THE LOWDOWN

wahoo Kickr Move

So you’ve committed to a full winter season of indoor training; you’re keen to use this opportunity to really dial-in your riding and improve your power and cardiovascular system ready for a busy spring of riding and racing on the road. There’s only one problem; your natural riding style in real-world conditions is that of a lightweight climber who’s constantly jumping in and out of the saddle to put the power down and you generally feel uncomfortable and inefficient permanently riding in the saddle when training indoors.

Wahoo have the answer! The new Kickr Move (yes, the clue’s in the title) moves with you thanks to its unique oscillating action, giving you a more natural ‘real world cycling’ feel on the bike and it’s this movement that will really suit the kind of rider we’ve just described.

We give you the lowdown on the Wahoo Kickr Move over on YouTube.

Wahoo Kickr Move

The Kickr Move features an oscillating action for a more natural feeling ride experience.

The Wahoo Kickr Move is here to spice up your indoor training, encouraging you to get out of the saddle as and when you need to.

To achieve this whole new riding experience Wahoo have taken all of the great features from their KICKR V5 and integrated multi dimensions of movement to this all-new wheel-off smart trainer. Featuring the same familiar feel of the KICKR V5, with its instant power transfer thanks to that direct-drive configuration, this new KICKR MOVE amplifies the authentic ride feel further thanks to its for-to-aft and side-to-side movement.

Wahoo Kickr Move

The Kickr Move retains all of the great features of their popular Kickr static trainer and combines them with engineered-in movement for the first time.

Wahoo Kickr Move

A stable platform with plenty of fore and aft movement lets you jump out of the saddle and put the power down just like you would on the road.

If you’re a cyclist who naturally moves in and out of the saddle as you ride, rising to find and hold your rhythm then the KICKR MOVE will suit you and your riding style. This new-found freedom to move brings next-level realism to your workouts and virtual races while also reducing overall fatigue, with the KICKR MOVE’s four-axis movement improving your overall efficiency on the bike, encouraging you to train indoors for longer.

Wahoo Kickr Move

Suddenly a long winter of indoor training doesn’t seem quite so daunting.
