CANNONDALE SUPERSIX EVO SE & SUPERSIX EVO CX

2022 Cannondale Supersix EVO SE

Dirt just got faster! Introducing the all-new 2022 Cannondale SuperSix EVO SE and 2022 Cannondale SuperSix EVO CX…

Launched today 24.08.21 – Cannondale have revealed their all-new Cannondale SuperSix EVO SE and CX models for 2022. These two new models are aimed squarely at off-road performance and competition with the SuperSix EVO SE designed to excel in fast, long-distance gravel events where speed and aerodynamic efficiency play an important role and the SuperSix EVO CX which has been built to perform brilliantly during the rough and tumble of the very muddiest Cyclocross races.

Both models share the same SuperSix EVO CX frame and fork; fans of the existing Cannondale SuperSix EVO road bike will quickly spot the remarkable similarities between the original road-going chassis and this new off-road-ready chassis and it’s clear to see that Cannondale have taken all of the key benefits from the road bike including aero-profiled tube profiles and compliant dropped seat stays before increasing tyre clearance between tyre and frame/fork to accommodate tyres up to 45mm wide. Back for its fully-updated third edition Lake District Mountain Biking – Essential Trails is the bestselling guide to the riding in the Lake District, taking in some of the very finest mountain bike trails in the UK. Riding in the Lakes is a unique experience, with a vast amount of technical trails packed into a comparatively small geographical area of the UK there’s a riding route to suit everyone. This brilliant book contains over 20 of the best mountain bike rides in the Lake District, with the shortest ride being 12 kilometres and the longest being 60 kilometres there will be a trail to suit you making this bike a useful guide book for mountain bikers of any level.

This book contains a really good mix of rides, from the classic Lake District routes that are on almost everyone’s tick list, including Walna Scar, High Street and Borrowdale to much lesser-known trails. The area is surprisingly diverse when it comes to riding terrain with singletrack over exposed moorland, long climbs with particularly technical sections, wooded valleys and of course some of the rockiest trails you’ll ever encounter in the UK.

About the authors…

Richard Staton started mountain biking back in Bristol in 1991 on a Trek 970 while on a student work placement from Sheffield City Polytechnic. Being based most of the time in Sheffield those early years were spent riding in The Peak District. After graduation he moved to the South Lakes where he stayed in order to feed his addiction. Over three decades later, he’s still here and still riding!

Chris Gore is better known for his rock climbing escapades. It is little known that he has been riding bikes since his first tricycle, starting in London and finally seeing good sense and
finishing in the Lakes (there are no mountains in London). Chris enjoys both road and MTB and throws himself down rocky slopes on a regular basis. Hey, it’s faster than walking!

FAST BIKE FRIDAY – CERVELO ASPERO-5 FORCE E-TAP AXS

Cervelo Aspero-5 Force eTap AXS 2021

This week’s Fast Bike Friday feature casts its eye over the simply stunning, glittery, iridescent Cervelo Aspero-5 Force eTap AXS gravel bike, a premium gravel race bike packed full of cutting-edge technology and performance-focused features. Before we get into the details just take a minute to appreciate that attention-grabbing paintjob with its magical colour-changing properties. Cervelo’s Aspero gravel bike has been around for a couple of seasons now and during that time has quickly gained a reputation as a gravel bike with its sights set firmly on speed, efficiency and performance; back in April this year Cervelo launched a small sub-range of the Aspero – the Aspero-5 featuring a number of significant upgrades from the original Aspero and taking the performance capabilities of this gravel race-bike even further.

Cervelo Aspero-5 Force eTap AXS 2021

The iridescent paintjob on the Cervelo Aspero-5 Force eTap AXS is simply stunning, click the link and see the colour change as we move our camera.

So what do we mean by ‘performance focused’, well, as we’ve highlighted before in previous Fast Bike Friday features while the discipline of gravel biking is relatively new it’s already beginning to diversify into a broader range of sub-genres. In the same way that the term ‘mountain bike’ can be applied to a cross-country bike, a trail bike, an enduro bike or downhill bike which are all distinctly different and excel in different areas so too can the term ‘gravel bike’ be applied to a wide range of bikes that all excel in slightly different areas. From tough utilitarian bike-packing machines, affordable alloy bikes with geometries that are closer to more traditional road bikes, playful burly options with 650b wheels & dropper posts, carbon gravel bikes with cleverly engineered technology designed to isolate you from rough terrain and super-lightweight aero race machines such as the Cervelo Aspero-5 built to perform at the highest levels of gravel bike competition.

The Aspero-5 has been designed specifically to generate speed, with Cervelo describing it as an off-road race bike. As the gravel bike market matures we increasingly see more and more cyclists coming into the discipline from different cycling backgrounds. The Aspero-5 suits committed, competitive roadies coming over to gravel, bringing their higher fitness-levels and performance expectations with them.

Cervelo Aspero-5 Force eTap AXS 2021

Looking beyond that mesmerising paintjob it’s easy to see just how aerodynamic the front-end of the Aspero-5 is.

What are the key differences between the original Aspero and the new Aspero-5? There are two main distinctions between the sub-ranges; firstly the grade of carbon used in the construction of the frame and fork – a lighter, stiffer ‘Aspero-5’ carbon on the higher-spec models compared with Cervelo’s slightly lower-grade ‘Aspero All Carbon’ material used on the standard Aspero. The second difference is more obvious, cast your eyes over the Aspero-5 chassis and you’ll quickly notice a much more integrated cockpit on the Aspero-5 with no exposed cables on the bike and that really neat setup for the handlebars, stem, frame and forks with the junctions between those components appearing to be virtually seamless. The benefits of this setup are the increased aero-efficiency at the sort of speeds you’ll be doing in training and competition as well as an increase in durability and functionality, with the cables shielded from the elements (not such a factor on this wireless drivetrain model, but more on the later); oh and another important consideration? Just how good it looks!

Cervelo Aspero-5 Force eTap AXS 2021

The Aspero-5’s chassis is super-light and stiff in the right places making it ready to perform on race-day.

Cervelo have certainly built some versatility into the Aspero-5 too, engineering in the option of running a standard diameter 700c wheel (which are spec’d with the complete Aspero-5 bikes) and a tyre max width of 45mm or running a smaller diameter 650B wheel size with a max tyre width of 51mm. This flexibility is facilitated by the Aspero-5’s ‘Trailmix’ dropout system in the fork which allows you to fine tune the wheelbase of the bike to suit the two different wheel sizes and their respective contact patches with the ground.

Cervelo Aspero-5 Force eTap AXS 2021

Cervelo have engineered some versatility into the Aspero-5 with their Trailmix fork system allowing you to choose between wheel sizes.

Cervelo understand the importance of engineering in some comfort into the Aspero-5 chassis. This has been achieved with those dropped seatstays, helping to give a small amount of vertical compliance and have combined this with a slightly more forgiving 27.2mm carbon fibre seatpost to keep you comfortable in the saddle, even after hours of mixed-terrain riding. With some sophisticated carbon fibre layup in the manufacturing process Cervelo have been able to add small amounts of flex where it’s needed and contrasted that with super-stiff areas such as the bottom bracket, downtube and head tube to give a responsive feel and instant acceleration under power. That stunning carbon frame and fork with its beautiful paint finish is going to need some protection from off-road riding and the risk of flying debris so there’s some rubberised downtube protection to protect the carbon frame from small rocks and stones flipping up from gravel roads.

Cervelo Aspero-5 Force eTap AXS 2021

Those dropped seatstays give some vertical compliance to the Aspero-5 frame helping you stay comfortable in the saddle, even on all-day epics.

Cervelo Aspero Force eTap AXS 2021

Aero-gravel is a thing – with a fully integrated cockpit and fully concealed cables the Aspero-5 is designed to cut through the air.

We tend to see a mix of preferences from our customers when it comes to the type of drivetrain spec’d on a gravel bike; typically the split seems to be between riders coming into gravel biking from road or mountain biking with mountain bikers enjoying the 1X drivetrain option for its simplicity and functional performance off-road while roadies tend to prefer a 2X drivetrain giving them a slightly larger range of gears which are better suited to rides that are often a mix of fast road sections and more unpredictable off-road terrain. So with this in mind it’s interesting to see this SRAM Force 1X drivetrain spec’d on the performance-orientated Aspero-5 Force eTap AXS model; that said Cervelo have ensured there’s still a very good spread of gear ratios on this 12-speed drivetrain with the lowest 36x36T gear giving you a ratio that can easily handle steep, loose off-road climbs. It’s worth pointing out too that the smallest cog on the rear cassette is a tiny 10T so there’s less chance of you spinning out and running out of meaningful gears on fast road sections.

Cervelo Aspero-5 Force eTap AXS 2021

The SRAM Force eTap AXS wireless groupset excels in difficult off-road riding conditions.

If you’ve not used a bike with SRAM’s wireless transmission before it’s worth highlighting just what a game changer it is. With the cable-free, electronic 12-speed rear derailleur receiving a wireless signal from the digital button on the gear / brake lever on the handlebars every gear change is crisp and precise with no chance of you fluffing a gear change in the heat of the moment during a competitive gravel bike event. Those precise movements of the rear derailleur are driven by a tiny motor within the rear mech, with the derailleur being powered by a small clip-on rechargeable battery that is quick to be fully-charged and lasts up to 60 riding hours on average.

Cervelo Aspero-5 Force eTap AXS 2021

The 12-speed wireless electronic rear derailleur performs flawlessly, providing crisp, precise gear selection even in the heat of off-road competition.

Cervelo Aspero-5 Force eTap AXS 2021

The gear ratios on the Cervelo Aspero-5 Force eTap AXS are modest compared to some other gravel bikes, reflecting its focus on high-speed performance.

With this 1X drivetrain the SRAM Force eTap digital shifters are setup so that the button on the right shifter moves the chain up the cassette and the button on the left shifter moves the chain back down the cassette. This versatile digital drivetrain features its own software and app which allows you to fine tune the functionality of each gear selection and even lets you spec exactly how they work; so if you prefer, you can set the left shifter to change up the cassette and the right shifter to move down the cassette.

Cervelo Aspero-5 Force eTap AXS 2021

The SRAM Force wireless electronic gear shifter is simple to operate and precise-shifting, even with gloved hands.

Rounding out this hi-tech digital wireless groupset is the SRAM Force AXS carbon chainset with a 36T narrow / wide chainring designed to retain the chain safely with no risk of it unshipping over rough terrain when combined with the rear derailleur which features an internal fluid clutch designed to add tension to the chain and prevent it from flapping around on rocky descents. In a further acknowledgement to how Cervelo see the Aspero-5 being used the Force AXS chainset features a built-in power meter which provides power readings that are accurate within +/-1.5% and aren’t affected by climactic conditions, another welcome addition to this bike and a really useful training tool.

Cervelo Aspero-5 Force eTap AXS 2021

The 36T SRAM Force chainset reflects the performance-orientated nature of the Aspero-5 featuring an integrated power meter.

SRAM Force hydraulic disc brakes provide confidence-inspiring, controlled braking in all riding conditions, regardless of whether you’re riding in wet weather on loose, gravel trails or descending long, alpine-style roads with an endless amounts of hairpin turns. These flat-mount brakes callipers sit neatly on the front fork and within the rear triangle, with all brake hoses routed internally through the frame and forks; mid-sized 160mm Paceline disc rotors mean braking-heat is quickly dissipated while weight is kept to a minimum.

Cervelo Aspero-5 Force eTap AXS 2021

Powerful SRAM hydraulic brake calipers provide ample braking even in wet off-road conditions.

Cervelo Aspero-5 Force eTap AXS 2021

Neat flat-mount calipers and 160mm SRAM Paceline rotors keep you in control regardless of the terrain you’re negotiating.

A super-light, stiff and responsive gravel bike is only as fast as its wheels that are fitted; put a heavy pair of wheels with slow-rolling knobby tyres on such a bike and you’ll soon find that the performance potential takes a significant hit. Thankfully there’s no such wheelset on the Aspero-5 Force eTap AXS; Cervelo have spec’d an equally high-performing wheelset to compliment all they achieved in the making of the Aspero-5 with a pair of super-light Reserve 32mm DT370 wheels featuring 32mm deep carbon fibre rims that boast a 24mm internal rim width which really helps to give the tyre sidewalls a nice square profile preventing pinch flats and placing more of the tyre’s tread pattern in contact with the ground for increased traction and control.

Cervelo Aspero-5 Force eTap AXS 2021

The Reserve 32mm carbon wheelset boasts a 24mm inner-rim-width to provide a nice square tyre profile, increasing their capacity off-road.

The Reserve carbon wheels feature a pair of durable sealed-bearing DT Swiss hubs with strong straight-pull spokes built to handle the extra demands of gravel rides and the extra forces incurred at the hub by the hydraulic disc brakes.

Cervelo Aspero-5 Force eTap AXS 2021

DT Swiss DT370 centre-lock hubs are smooth and durable, standing up well to the rigours of riding off-road.

Going back to our point regarding gravel tyres and the need to get that balance right between the amount of grip and the traction a tyre provides compared with just how fast and efficiently it roles, enabling you to hold your speed over long distances, Cervelo have hit the spot again with the Panaracer Gravel King SK tyres spec’d on the Aspero-5. These gravel tyres already have a strong reputation for being tyres that are fast and efficient on the smooth stuff while providing just the right amount of grip off-road when you’re negotiating tight, loose turns and creeping up super-steep gravel climbs. At 38mm these tyres aren’t super-wide and help to keep the overall weight of the bike down, but as we mentioned earlier there’s plenty of scope for other tyres here with the Aspero-5 taking a 700c tyre up to 45mm wide with no clearance issues.

Cervelo Aspero-5 Force eTap AXS 2021

With tubeless-ready carbon rims and Panaracer Gravel King SK tubeless tyres you’ll be able to tune your wheel system to run lower, more grippy tyre pressures.

Cervelo Aspero-5 Force eTap AXS 2021

The tread pattern on the Panaracer Gravel Kings brilliantly blends a fast-rolling centre with a more grippy outer edge.

The Cervelo Aspero-5 Force eTap AXS is right at the top of the premium, high-performance gravel bike tree, designed specifically to take your gravel riding to the next level when it comes to race results and / or demanding training rides spent negotiating endless miles of gravel roads, merciless climbs and super-technical off-road trails. This bike is so high-spec that it will easily eclipse a fair portion of the most sought-after road bikes out there let alone gravel bikes; with its light, stiff aerodynamic frameset, cutting-edge wireless electronic SRAM Force groupset and those fast-rolling, durable Reserve carbon wheels the Aspero-5 shines regardless of the terrain you choose to test it on. Speaking of shine we can’t sign off without acknowledging that stunning paintjob one more time. If you haven’t already, check out the link at the top of this feature to see how the colour constantly changes as we move around the bike!…

Cervelo Aspero-5 Force eTap AXS 2021

FAST BIKE FRIDAY – PINARELLO DOGMA F SRAM RED E-TAP AXS

Pinarello Dogma F Sram Red eTap AXS 2021

This week for our Fast Bike Friday feature we’re taking a detailed look at the all-new Pinarello Dogma F, the successor to their previous top of the range model the Dogma F12. Recently launched, just before the 2021 Tour De France the Dogma F has already scored an amazing Gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics piloted by Richard Carapaz of Ecuador following shortly after his third place podium spot at Le Tour. At first glance the new Dogma F doesn’t look a whole lot different to its predecessor, but drill a little deeper and you’ll discover that there’s some significant refinements on the F12.

Pinarello Dogma F Sram Red eTap AXS 2022

The all-new Pinarello Dogma F with Sram Red eTap AXS 12-speed wireless groupset

Pinarello Dogma F 2022

Richard Carapaz has already piloted the new Dogma F to a Gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics and a 3rd place in the 2021 Tour De France

The new Dogma F is stunning to look; that goes without saying, however every feature of the frame is driven by performance as well as aesthetic. The Pinarello Dogma F Sram Red eTap AXS reflects the Italian brand’s command on creating the ultimate race bike with every aspect from aerodynamics to overall weight, carbon layup, tube thickness and tube profiles refined to give the highest performance outcomes, with Italian craftmanship being Pinarello’s overarching modus operandi.

In the Wheelbase office, during the lead up to the new Dogma being launched we all assumed the it would be named the F14? So why no number this time? According to Pinarello The idea of the eliminating the numerical code which has run for seven generations of bike is that ‘over the years the F alone has come to signify the ultimate road bike in their range with the iconic Dogma F going beyond a superficial numerical classification’. We suspect there may have also been an awkward clash with the world-renowned fighter jet too! So from now on read Dogma F, think ultimate Pinarello road race bike.

What’s the difference between this and the previous generation F12? There are number of key improvements of which the headlines are…

Key Data

265 grams lighter (complete disc frame kit in size 53)
12% stiffer at the bottom bracket
3.2% more aerodynamic (F rim vs F12 rim)
4.8% more aerodynamic (F disc vs F12 disc)
1.3 Watts saved at 40 Km/h / 2.6 Watts SAVED at 50 Km/h

Pinarello Dogma F Sram Red eTap AXS 2022

The numerical system for the Dogma is a thing of the past with the Dogma F now being their top of the range model

Pinarello have always maintained that the Dogma should be able to perform at the highest level when it comes to four key considerations – aerodynamics, low weight, comfort and handling. There’s no separate bike for each specialist distinction as you might see from other high-end bike brands who tend to produce an out-and-out aero road bike, a super-light climbing machine and an endurance-focused road bike designed to be more comfortable over longer distances. This is a shrewd move by Pinarello; whilst it may be the case that some professional road racers can select a very specific type of road bike to suit the terrain and circumstances they are racing it’s not the real world for the majority of us amateur cyclists.

Pinarello Dogma F Sram Red eTap AXS 2022

Made from Torayca T1100G1K Aerospace Carbon the Dogma F’s frame and fork is an Italian masterpiece

Informed by the professional cyclists of Team Ineos the all-new Dogma F has been designed to excel in all areas; it’s a bike that can climb brilliantly, descend confidently and hold its speed efficiently on long flat roads. While you may see their fellow competitors swapping bikes to specifically suit each stage of a Grand Tour the Team Ineos pros only ride the Dogma F regardless of the terrain. The Ineos pro team is famed for its no-nonsense ‘marginal gains’ attention to every detail and that’s enough evidence for us that the Pinarello Dogma F is built to perform to the highest level in every riding and racing scenario.

Pinarello Dogma F Red eTap AXS 2022

Approved by the UCI for elite competition, the new Pinarello Dogma F has already proved itself at the 2021 Tour De France

Pinarello have taken advantage of the UCI’s recent bike design rule changes making the seat tube and seatpost narrower as well as dropping the seatstays lower down the seat tube for even less drag. Endless hours spent in the wind tunnel as well as real world testing have led to a new down tube profile that helps to improve aerodynamics beyond simple straight line efficiency and is even more effective when the bike is fitted with a bottle cage and water bottle.

Pinarello Dogma F Sram Red eTap AXS 2022

With the seatstays positioned lower down the seat tube there’s significantly less drag

As well as those significant improvements there has been a lot of attention directed to the front of the bike. That beautifully integrated cockpit featuring a smooth junction between handlebar, stem and frame with all cables routed internally have improved the aero performance of the Dogma F when pointed directly into the wind. The redesigned fork area is now even more aero efficient, particularly on the disc brake models which now register 7.3% less drag than the rim brake version.

Pinarello state that bike handling is at the very top of their list of design priorities, over and above weight, and that obsessing over the scales in the design studio can be distracting, adversely affecting the most important properties of the bike out on the road. Instead Pinarello’s design approach has led to a high-performance race machine that boasts high levels of comfort and responsiveness. That said, they’ve still managed to shave off some significant weight meaning that the new F is actually 11% lighter than the previous F12. How has this been achieved? With a commitment to innovation and some new cutting-edge production methods including 3D-printing titanium components. The seat post, headset, fork and cockpit have all shed weight with a saving of 265 grams compared to the Dogma F12; going back to their focus on handling over weight, this new lower weight has been achieved at the same time as an increase in stiffness where it’s needed – the bottom bracket is now 12% stiffer AND aerodynamics have been improved too to save those all-important watts.

Pinarello Dogma F Sram Red eTap AXS 2022

The Pinarello Dogma F is lightweight and spritely but not at the expense of confident bike-handling and appropriate levels of rider comfort

As the model name of this particular Dogma F suggests, Pinarello have spec’d the fantastically efficient, cutting-edge SRAM Red Etap AXS wireless groupset. This top-of-the range drivetrain from SRAM suits the Dogma F perfectly with its slick, clutter-free configuration further adding to the Dogma F’s super-aero abilities. The gear shifters on the handlebars contain simple button-batteries that power a unique shifting signal to the front and rear derailleurs; at the drivetrain both the front and rear mechs feature rechargeable batteries that securely clip directly onto the derailleurs.

With a fully powered, wireless gear shift each change is light and positive. That precise gear shift is really confidence inspiring – with its digital consistency encouraging you to change gear more often than you perhaps would with a conventional cable-activated groupset, leading to a more sophisticated use of the gears available, keeping you feeling fresher for longer during epic all-day rides. Operation couldn’t be more simple or intuitive, simply press the right lever to shift down the block and the left lever to move up the block. Press both right and left levers together and the front mech will shift, either from the big ring to the small ring or the small ring to the big ring depending on where your chain is currently sitting. If you want to change how your bike shifts you can customise the settings via the SRAM App to enable you to shift up the block with the right lever and down the block with the left lever. Another brilliant addition to this top-of-the-range groupset is the SRAM Red AXS power meter integrated into the chainset. This power meter measures right and left leg power balance and power readings are accurate within +/-1.5%

The SRAM Red eTap AXS 12-speed shifters are ergonomic and shift well even when you’re wearing thick gloves

When it comes to braking on the Dogma F Sram Red eTap AXS road bike you can rely on SRAM Red powerful but easy to modulate hydraulic disc brakes which keep you in control even in unpredictable, wet weather and poor road surfaces. With flat mounts on the Dogma F frame and fork the brake calipers look neat and uncluttered; thru-axles keep everything secure and in place further adding to the stiffness and positive handling of the bike.

The SRAM Red flat-mount hydraulic brake calipers are powerful but easy to modulate

This particular Dogma F features a pair of super-fast, lightweight and aerodynamic carbon fibre Fulcrum Speed 40 Carbon wheels. These disc-brake specific tubeless-ready wheels feature carbon rims with an innovative profile and a 26.5mm width for enhanced aerodynamics and a wider overall tyre profile for enhanced grip; the twill weave of the carbon fibre texture has been carefully engineered to optimise the elastic responsiveness of the rim to be spritely and responsive under acceleration while also being more compliant and comfortable over long distances. Pinarello have spec’d a pair of lightweight but durable 26mm Pirelli Pzero Race tyres which offer plenty of confidence-inspiring grip; if you prefer something a little wider the Dogma F can handle tyres up to 28mm with ample clearance.

Pinarello Dogma F Sram Red eTap AXS 2022

Carbon aero profile rims have been designed to perform efficiently even when side winds are a factor

With the handle bars, stem and seat post all being integrated components of the Dogma F frameset there’s very little finishing kit left to spec, with the saddle being the only other consideration. Again this is a Pinarello-owned component coming from their ‘MOST’ sub range; the MOST Linx Ultrafast Superflow L saddle features a profile that follows the trend for a shorter-nosed, slightly wider shape and will suit most riders. It also includes lightweight, compliant carbon fibre saddle rails for added comfort.

Pinarello Dogma F Sram Red eTap AXS 2022

The Most Linx saddle features a short, stubby profile that has become popular in the last few years

The all-new Pinarello Dogma F is a beautiful bike to look at which, it’s fair to say, boasts an equal amount of high-performance functionality as it does aesthetic quality. Pinarello could not of got to this point without years of development and the evolution of design and engineering inherited from each and every iteration of the previous Dogma models. Combine that steady growth with a rich racing heritage and successes of teams like Sky and Ineos and you’ve got some of the toughest, most demanding testing directly influencing the final design and construction of the all-new Pinarello Dogma F. The Pinarello Dogma F Sram Red eTap AXS with its cutting-edge wireless groupset and powerful hydraulic brakes, as well as those superlight super-aero Fulcrum carbon wheels represents the absolute pinnacle of road racing bikes today; regardless of whether you plan to race one or simply want to ride your dream bike and take your cycling experience and enjoyment of this beautiful sport to the next level the Dogma F will take you there.

FAST BIKE FRIDAY – CUBE REACTION C:62 ROOKIE

Cube Reaction C:62 Rookie 2021

Check out this very special race bike from Cube! For Fast Bike Friday this week we’re taking a look at something a little different – the Reaction C:62 Rookie is a full-on, race-ready carbon fibre cross country mountain bike that just happens to have been shrunk down to child-friendly proportions. Over the past few years, following on from the successes of cyclists such as Bradley Wiggins and Geraint Thomas at the Tour De France and Olympics cycling has really grown in the UK with a significant increase of enthusiasts in nearly all age groups. Part of this growth has seen a large number of child-focused cycling clubs hosting training sessions and races across all children’s age categories with support from some very hard-working cycling coaches.

Cube Reaction C:62 Rookie 2021

The Cube Reaction C:62 Rookie will help your young racer excel

Nowadays it’s not unusual to see children following a very clear and successful progression route from their early years through to more competitive junior races as they grow and develop their skills and fitness; with safety at the forefront of everyone’s minds it makes sense that during their early years children are encouraged to race off-road in cyclocross and mountain bike events, away from the potential dangers of the road and on courses that are tailored specifically to their own skills levels. So there’s plenty of cycling-mad families out there attending some great events where each member of the family gets their chance to race, including the kids! If your child loves to race off-road then the high-spec Reaction C:62 Rookie is a fantastic option and if you’re savvy you may be able to pass the bike on to siblings and see this bike being raced for a number of years within the family.

Cube Rookie C:62 2021

The super-light C:62 Monocoque Carbon frame and Manitou Markhor TS Air suspension fork makes a race-ready chassis

The Reaction C:62 Rookie is available in two sizes 13.5” and 15”. The two bike size options feature different sized wheels to help match the proportions of the bike with the 13.5” option (pictured here) spec’d with 27.5” wheels and the slightly larger 15” option featuring 29” wheels – the typical standard on full-sized cross country mountain bikes. As the model name suggests the Reaction C:62 Rookie’s frame is crafted from exactly the same premium C:62 carbon as Cube’s adult race bikes and boasts the same features as you’d expect on any World Cup cross country mountain biker’s bike. A high-spec Sram NX Eagle 1×12 groupset gives every possible gear ratio your child could need, enabling them to get over even the steepest, loosest mid-race climbs; there’s a simple single 32T chainring upfront matched with a wide ratio 11-50T cassette out back with the one-by configuration being particularly child-friendly. There’s only one gear shifter to use so there’s less chance of your child fluffing their gear changes in the heat of the moment.

Cube Reaction C:62 Rookie 2021

With a Sram NX Eagle drivetrain and a Manitou suspension fork with a lockout the Reaction C:62 Rookie is built to perform

Cube have spec’d the Reaction C:62 Rookie with a pair of Manitou Markhor suspension forks which have been specially tuned to better suit the lower weight of children so that they behave in exactly the same way that a good adult-sized suspension fork would – supple for small impacts and progressive through their travel to handle big hits without bottoming out. The Reaction C:62 Rookie is so fast and light that it needs a good pair of anchors to slow it down in a hurry; when race courses get technical and your child needs to slow quickly and in control the Magura MT Thirty hydraulic disc brakes have all the power and modulation for controlled braking on unpredictable terrain.

With a light, fast-rolling pair of Answer Atac AM wheels (sized 27.5” on the bike pictured) shod with Schwalbe Racing Ray and Schwalbe Racing Ralph cross-country MTB tyres fitted front and rear respectively. These 2.25” tyres feature tread profiles that strike that magic balance between being fast-rolling on hardpacked surfaces and providing ample grip on loose, loamy surfaces even when they’re negotiating tight, off-camber turns.

OK so some may think the Reaction C:62 Rookie is a little niche, it’s probably fair to say that your child will grow out of the bike fairly quickly, particularly if you’re putting them on the smaller 13.5” option, but as we’ve already highlighted, if you’re a cycling-mad family who have more than one child you’ll be able to utilise the C:62 Rookie as a race bike for more than one sibling, with the bike taking on competitive duties for a good number of years. It goes without saying that this bike will really enhance your child’s riding and enjoyment of mountain biking; with such a light carbon frame, capable suspension fork and a simple, reliable, precise-shifting SRAM groupset all that’s left is for your child to ride in confidence, pushing their skills level and fitness further because they’ll want to be on the bike for longer.

Cube Reaction C:62 Rookie 2021

The Reaction C:62 Rookie is versatile enough for long days mountain biking with family, fast gravel rides and of course for race day!

The Cube Reaction C:62 Rookie is available in-store and online now.

Fox Car Seat Cover

OK, it’s time to face up to it; we’re already in August with September knocking on the door and Autumn in the not too distant future. It won’t be long until the temperatures drop and the rain becomes a more regular riding companion than it has been recently. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclocross competitor taking on another winter-long campaign or a keen mountain biker who isn’t willing to compromise on time spent on the bike, the filthy, muddy riding conditions are inevitably going to be a constant throughout autumn and winter.

Even if you’re well prepared with a towel and change of clothes for after your ride, keeping the interior of your car clean when you jump in after a muddy ride is pretty much impossible. If you’re not well prepared then a trip home in your car wearing muddy kit is pretty much guaranteed to make a mess of your car seat. We’ve got the answer! Our Fox car seat covers are waterproof with adjustable webbing to enable you to fit them to any car or van seat and include the iconic Fox head logo embroidered into the cover so you can show everyone your passion for riding.

PRODUCT FEATURE – GARMIN RALLY POWER METER PEDALS

Garmin Rally Power Meter Pedals

GARMIN RALLY XC100 SINGLE-SENSING POWER METER

Cycling continues to be influenced by digital technology, with everything from wireless transmissions to suspension lockouts, GPS bike computers and of course power meters all rapidly developing when it comes to functionality, user-friendliness and affordability. With more and more gravel biking events taking place around the world and with somewhat of a rebirth when it comes to the popularity of cross country mountain bike racing there is an increasing amount of serious cyclists moving over to the off-road cycling disciplines and it’s this type of cyclist who is bringing their scientific approach to training and competing with them. Garmin have seen this trend develop and in response have launched the Garmin Rally XC100 power meter pedal, designed specifically for measuring power on your off-road bike, regardless of whether you’re riding a gravel or mountain bike.

Rally XC100 Single Sensing Power Meter

As a more diverse group of cyclists move over to the off-road cycling disciplines they bring with them the need for training data by measuring power off-road

Needless to say, riding off-road brings its own challenges when it comes digital componentry being able to handle wet, dirty, gritty conditions along with the inevitable knocks incurred from riding on the very edges of control. Thankfully Garmin Rally XC100 power meter pedals have undergone rigorous testing to ensure that they remain reliable when it comes to data measurement and are durable enough to handle the conditions encountered when riding off-road. With the sensors housed inside the body of the pedal it’s quick and easy to install them on your bike just like any other pedal; swapping them from bike to bike is quick and easy.

Garmin Rally XC100 Single Sensing Power Meter

Garmin Rally XC100 Single-Sensing Power Meter Pedals RRP £619.00

The Garmin Rally XC100 power meter pedal provides reliable readings by precisely measuring your cadence and the forces detected on the left pedal, the power meter then doubles the value to provide a figure for power. Incidentally this single-sensing power meter can be upgraded later to a dual-sensing system and, perhaps more significantly the transferable spindle can be installed in Rally RK road or Rally RS road pedal body kits (each sold separately) to enable you to move from gravel, mountain bike or cyclocross over to road. Although this may be a bit too much of a faff for some it’s nice to see that Garmin have engineered this versatility into there power meter pedal system.

Garmin Rally XC100 Single-Sensing Power Meter

Garmin Rally XC100 Single-Sensing Power Meter Pedals RRP £619.00

Battery life is really efficient for the Rally XC100 power meter with up to 120 hours of life when powered by LR44 batteries. You can pair the Rally XC100 pedals with your Garmin Edge cycling computer and they are also compatible with the Garmin Connect App making data uploads and software updates quick and easy. If you’re training inside on a Tacx smart trainer then you can pair up the pedal to the Tacx Training App; Rally XC100 brings your power data to third-party apps too including all the key players you’d expect – Strava, TrainingPeaks, TrainerRoad and more.

GARMIN RALLY RS100 SINGLE-SENSING POWER METER

As well as developing their power meter technology and applying it to a pedal designed to be used in off-road cycling disciplines Garmin have also produced a road-going version using the same technology. Needless to say the RS100 road pedals boast a similar reputation for being durable, lightweight and precise when it comes to the collection of meaningful power data. Just like the XC100 the RS100 houses the sensors securely within the body of the left pedal, meaning pedal changes from one road bike to another are quick and easy with no requirement to attach separate sensors to your bike as you may have to with rival power meter systems.

Garmin Rally RS100 Single-Sensing Power Meter

The RS100 power meter pedal option has been designed for road bike use and includes the same user-friendly features as the XC100 off-road version

Just as we’ve describe above when looking at the Rally XC100 pedal, the same versatile features apply to the RS100 – the spindle is transferable between pedal bodies so you could potentially swap the power meter portion out into the Rally XC100 pedal body. You can also upgrade the single-sensing power meter into a dual sensing system. The Rally RS100 power meter pedals are compatible with Garmin Edge cycling computers and you can pair them with your Garmin Connect App making data uploads and software updates quick and easy. If you’re training inside on a Tacx smart trainer then you can pair up the pedal to the Tacx Training App; the Rally RS100 brings your power data to third-party apps too including all the key players you’d expect – Strava, TrainingPeaks, TrainerRoad and more.
