FAST BIKE FRIDAY – MERIDA BIG TRAIL 400

Merida Big Trail 400

This week for Fast Bike Friday we’re taking a look at the Merida Big Trail 400 hardcore hardtail. Tough trail-focused hardtails with longer-travel suspension forks upfront are very much a staple within UK mountain biking with this simple setup being really popular amongst riders looking for a bike that can handle rowdy, technical trails and aggressive riding. It turns out that this sort of approach to mountain biking is fairly unique to the UK and so, when you begin to look at the bike ranges from mainstream brands that are based elsewhere in the world you’ll find that there aren’t always many options for this sort of hardtail MTB.

The Merida Big Trail 400 is a playful UK-focused trail bike…

Merida Big Trail 400

Despite Merida being one of the biggest bike manufacturers in the world they obviously have their fingers on the pulse when it comes to measuring demand for all genres of bikes. The brand have an ethos that encourages comments and feedback gathered from customers via their retailers and fed back to their national Product Managers. This chain of communication flagged up the UK’s demand for a fun, agile hardtail trail bike and working closely with their UK MTB Product Manager Rey the wish list for such a bike was defined – a trail focused 29er with 140mm fork, 1x transmission, Boost standard bolt thru axles and of course a dropper post; as a result of this process the Merida Big Trail range of bikes was born.

The Big Trail 400 was born out of a demand for a more agile hardcore hardtail…

Merida Big Trail 400

Merida have developed a bike with very modern ‘trail bike’ geometry. With a slack enduro inspired 65.5° head angle the Big Trail 400 features a 140mm travel suspension fork to handle steep, tight, technical trails. The frame geometry features a long-reach top tube combined with a short stem to give plenty of room to move freely about the bike while keeping steering sharp and responsive; the bike also features a super-low stand-over height further adding to your agility on the bike while a long dropper post means that when fully-extended seated pedaling is comfortable and effective; with the dropper activated the saddle is well out of the way to accommodate more aggressive trail riding.

The slack 65.5° head angle combined with a burly 140mm travel fork is ready for steep, technical descents…

Merida Big Trail 400

The Merida Big Trail 400 is made from lightweight but tough AL 6061 aluminium and is manufactured using Merida’s Techno Forming System which produces cleverly profiled frame tubing that flares out at the head tube to enhance overall strength. There is also reinforcement at the junction between the top tube and seat tube and some clever construction at the bottom bracket to be able to pull the large 29er wheel in tightly to allow for super-short chainstays which help to further enhance the playful nature of the Big Trail 400. With contemporary Boost hub spacing and thru-axles the frame is stiff and the junction between frame and wheel is secure.

Merida Big Trail 400

Merida have spec’d a Suntour XCR34 LOR Air suspension fork providing that all-important 140mm of travel to handle those big hits. These aggressive trail forks accommodate a 110x15mm thru-axle which keeps the 29er front wheel secure and in place while enhancing steering precision. The Suntour XCR34 also features a lockout on the fork crown to allow you to quickly lock out your fork when you’re riding back up the hill to take another run down your favourite trail.

Merida Big Trail 400

Frame clearance on the Merida Big Trail 400 is really good, allowing you to fit big, aggressive tread 29” tyres with a maximum width of 2.5”. The bike comes spec’d with capable 29” x 2.4” Kenda Regolith tyres that provide loads of traction on the up hills as well as on the tight, loose downhill turns. This aggressive trail bike rolls fast over obstacles thanks to its 29er wheels; the bigger wheels and burly tyres mean you can plough through harsh terrain and remain in control with the benefit of a larger contact area between tyre and terrain when compared with smaller circumference wheels.

Merida Big Trail 400

Merida have spec’d the Big Trail with powerful Shimano BR-MT200 2 piston hydraulic disc brakes combined with big 180mm rotors to provide a lot of stopping power even when you’re really under pressure negotiating steep, super-tight downhill turns that require you to come to an almost dead stop.

Merida Big Trail 400

The Merida Big Trail 400 hardtail features a Shimano Deore 1x groupset made up of a Shimano Deore M5100 chainset with a 32 tooth chainring combined with a 10 speed Shimano Deore M4100 cassette with a wide user-friendly range of gears ranging from 11 to 46 teeth. A Shimano Deore M4100 shifter connected to a Shimano Deore M5120 Shadow+ 10 speed rear derailleur takes care of gear selection providing crisp, precise gear shifting in all circumstances; the addition of a pair of VP Components VPE-891 flat platform pedals is a nice touch by Merida.

This competitively priced trail bike packs a lot of punch for price and includes a great component spec that’s ready for action straight out of the box. It ticks all the boxes regarding what we’ve come to expect from a UK focused trail bike, namely slack geometry, a big travel suspension fork, simple 1x transmission and a dropper post all for just £1,000.00

PRODUCT LAUNCH! Introducing the Focus Atlas

Focus ATLAS Gravel Bike

Launched today! (13.01.21) The Focus ATLAS Gravel Bike is ‘Made to Lose’….

….Made to lose you say? Seems a strange marketing headline?! However, what initially sounds absurd actually makes a lot of sense when you dig a little deeper. The Focus ATLAS is the bike you reach for when you want to escape the world of appointments and smartphones, of project deadlines, racing-performance stats and feeling you have to compete and win every aspect of your life. The ATLAS Gravel Bike is made to lose, taking your attention away from competition and helping you to feel free from the modern world and all its hassles for as little or as long as you want.

Focus ATLAS Gravel Bike

The ATLAS is Focus’ first out-and-out Gravel Bike and although you could argue they’re a little late to the party their timing means that they come to market with a very capable bike packed full of the sort of features you’d expect to find on a modern bang-up-to-date gravel bike. Focus have also developed the ATLAS to have the type of geometry that has really found favour amongst the Gravel Glitterati in recent years, namely a longer reach achieved with a longer top tube combined with a shorter stem to keep steering sharp and responsive; the ATLAS also features super-short chainstays to keep the bike agile even on tight, technical terrain.

Focus ATLAS Gravel Bike

To keep the ATLAS more affordable to the masses and ensure a tough, reliable chassis that can handle epic multi-day adventures the frame material is alloy with a carbon fibre fork. Both the frame and fork feature multiple bolt-on-bosses so you can run a large amount of bags and accessories on the ATLAS including extra bottle cages, pannier racks and mudguards. Focus even do a pre-equipped version of the ATLAS 6.7 with mudguards rear pannier rack already fitted. There is also cable routing for a dropper post, so if that’s your bag and you want to get the saddle out of the way on the more technically-demanding trails then there’s always that option.

Focus ATLAS Gravel Bike

All of the cables on the bike are routed internally with one notable feature being the C.I.S. cockpit which takes the integration of the cables to the next level, routing the cables from the bar directly into the head tube to ensure seamless shifting and a clean uncluttered cockpit, which leaves plenty of room to run a substantial bar bag.

Focus ATLAS Gravel Bike

Focus have spec’d each of their ATLAS bikes with carefully-selected groupsets from Shimano’s GRX sub-range. These gravel-specific groupsets provide smooth shifting performance on all terrains and in any conditions. Depending on the specific model of ATLAS there are options for a 1X single chainring option or 2x double chainrings. All groupsets feature a wide ratio of gears to enable you to take on tough off-road climbs even on loose, technical terrain. It goes without saying that each groupset also includes Shimano’s excellent hydraulic brakes which provide consistent, powerful braking on any terrain. The GRX brake levers / gear shifters are also brilliantly engineered, with a slightly different pivot point to Shimano’s other road-focused groupsets to allow for more effective braking when you’re riding with your hands positioned on the brake hoods as well as a special matt-finish rubberised texture to the brake levers to enhance your grip even in wet, muddy conditions.

Focus ATLAS Gravel Bike

There are mounting points on the top tube for a small bag.

Focus ATLAS Gravel Bike

The ATLAS 6.8 and 6.9 includes a small top tube bag with the bike.

Focus ATLAS Gravel Bike

Thanks to the generous design of the frame the ATLAS provides space for up to 47 mm wide tyres, opening up a wide range of options regarding the choice of gravel tyres that you can run. Focus have also stated that the ATLAS can be run with 650B wheels and tyres, freeing you up to run even fatter tyres if you find yourself increasingly seeking out ever-more-rowdy gravel riding fun.

Focus ATLAS Gravel Bike

Despite the Super-short chainstays there’s still plenty of clearance to run 47mm wide tyres on 700c wheels.

Focus ATLAS Gravel Bike

We’re excited to see Focus throwing their hat into the ring with an all-new range of Gravel Bikes that tick all the boxes with regards to what we’re looking for from a modern, contemporary gravel bike. Great geometry, loads of gravel-friendly features and fantastic componentry means the Focus ATLAS is an absolute freedom machine capable of blasting though the woods on your one hour session or chugging over endless wilderness on your multi-day adventure, fully laden with all of your bike-packing equipment.

Focus ATLAS Gravel Bike

So what about that ‘Made to Lose’ headline? Well, let’s leave the last words to Focus…

‘The ATLAS is not made for winning races, setting world records, or beating people. It’s made to lose. Lose your mind, lose track of time, to lose yourself. It’s for getting out in nature, having adventures, meeting people, and generally just having a great time.’

The Focus ATLAS range of Gravel Bikes are now live on our website and will be available in-store and online at Wheelbase very soon, watch this space!….

Apidura is made up of a team of creative people who were brought together by a shared mission to find better, more efficient ways to explore the world by bike. This group of cyclists, makers and problem solvers have gone on to create ultralight packing systems which help us all to ride further and explore ever-more remote cycling destinations, helping to support our taste for adventure.

Apidura

All of Apidura’s products are designed to help people discover the world by bike, with this function dictating the design process their team of in-house designers and makers produce protypes which provide solutions for some of the most extreme environments and conditions out there. Apidura’s designers benefit from their own first-hand experience as adventurous cyclists, enabling them to make the most innovative packs available using technical fabrics and hi-tech manufacturing processes. Integrated into their business is the ‘Apidura Innovation Lab’ a place for pushing the boundaries of design, construction and ideas. The Innovation Lab provides a platform for their staff to work collaboratively, sharing ideas and mixing individual’s skills and experiences to create ever-more functional, efficient packs.

Apidura

As well as in-house development and real-world testing by the Apidura team, this forward-thinking brand work closely with a wide range of brand ambassadors from all genres of cycling to gain honest, reliable feedback on new protype products before going into full production. All of Apidura’s packs are precision crafted in China where skilled specialists carry out pattern cutting, sewing and fabric-welding to create the final product ready for the challenges of adventure riding.

Apidura

Apidura also stand out as one of the more thoughtful, outward-looking brands within the bike trade. They proudly state on their website that they are working to reduce waste and packing in the manufacturing and retailing of their products to minimise their environmental impact and they do not advertise on websites, social networks or in print because they believe ‘the world in noisy enough’. Apidura do not work around typical season releases either with the design process and the necessity for a new product to be released taking priority over ‘season collections’ and slick advertising campaigns, which is a refreshing approach where user-friendly function clearly leads the business’ ethos.

BRAND FEATURE – KONA GRAVEL & ADVENTURE BIKES

Kona Rove

Kona have really upped the stakes in the last couple of years with their range of gravel and adventure bikes aimed at riders with ambitions to explore further afield. This season their bike-packing and gravel bike range is more extensive than ever and caters to all of the subtle nuances associated with the growing trend of heading out on mixed-surfaces to explore on your bike. There’s pretty much a specification to suit all tastes; choose from 700c or fatter 650B wheels & tyres, steel frames or alloy frames, 1x or 2x drivetrains, flat bars or straight bars, full mudguards, dropper posts and pannier racks; the choices are almost endless!

This type of bike is fantastically versatile too, with our customers using them for all types of riding, from quick blasts in the woods to long, multi-day adventures with all of their wild-camping luggage onboard. Kona’s gravel and adventure bikes are the perfect tool for such endeavors and include multiple bolt-on bosses on the frames and forks to allow you to carry as much or as little luggage as you want for bike-packing or perhaps just your daily commute with the help of a rack and panniers.

Kona keeps up with the demands of even the most intrepid of bicycle-mounted explorers with their Sutra models being a mash up of the best aspects of modern mountain, road and gravel bikes. The Sutra ULTD is designed for hardcore bike-packers and features revised geometry for more aggressive off-road adventures, with enhanced tyre clearance and multiple luggage mounting options it even includes a dropper seat post to help you move more freely around the bike as you negotiate steep, technical descents. The Sutra Ltd takes a more conventional approach and is aimed at gravel riding and some lightweight bike-packing while Kona’s Sutra unashamedly shouts ‘traditional touring bike’ with a brooks leather saddle, triple chainset, mudguards, pannier rack and bar-end gear shifters.

Dew Plus

Kona’s Dew Plus bike is aimed primarily at the daily commute, but just as their gravel bikes can be used for commuting so too can the Dew be used for mixed-terrain, gravel and adventure riding. FRIDAY FEATURE BRAND – TACX HOME TRAINERS

Tacx Neo 2T Home Trainer

Happy New Year! A whole new year lays in front of us, with the potential to fill it with new personal challenges and targets. There’s even hope on the horizon that we can start to put 2020 behind us as the Coronavirus vaccine starts to roll out into society and race and event organisers begin to adapt how they run professional and amateur competition. Personal experience tells us that while we’re still in the depths of winter the next eight to twelve weeks will fly by and we’ll all soon be starting to take on our own cycling challenges. Whether you’re planning to hit the local crit racing scene with renewed vigour, are taking on an epic ride like the Fred Whitton Challenge in the heart of the Lake District or are simply looking for a way to get a little more enjoyment from your cycling by being a little fitter and more comfortable, taking on longer rides, it’s important to start getting focused on your training now.

We’ve seen a real boom in the popularity of indoor training over the past few years, particularly in 2020 as the impact of Coronavirus and the uncertainty around how and when we were able to ride during the various different lockdowns really impacted our cycling outside. As the technology of smart trainers has improved and the Zwift App has gained global popularity, riding indoors on a static trainer doesn’t fill cyclists with dread the way it used to. The impact of Zwift on the indoor smart trainer market cannot be overstated; this brilliant interactive App brings cyclists from all over the world together to train and compete in a virtual screen-based cycling world.

Let’s face it, here in the UK the weather is going to be against us for the coming weeks and months, then there’s the limited amount of daylight hours as well as the impact of other commitments such as work and family life; all of which impact just how effective you can be during your time-pushed training sessions. Using a smart trainer allows you to structure your training around your other daily responsibilities, it allows you to be more precise in the way that you train and enable you to focus on improving your weak spots in a safe and controlled environment. As you build up to the start of a new season you want to see yourself improving and again smart trainers are particularly helpful here, helping you to accurately record and analyse all of your training data which ends up motivating you more as you begin to see evidence of your fitness improving.

Today our Friday Feature Brand looks in more detail at Tacx smart trainers and some of their key models in the Tacx range. Typically, like any new technology there’s a lot of information to digest when you’re considering buying a smart trainer, including software compatibility, ride feel, power measurement, compatibility with your bike and even simple things like how much noise they produce. Below you will find all of the key information you’ll need to help you decide what is right for you. We wish you the best of luck in achieving your goals during 2021 and remember the well-known saying – ‘winter miles = summer smiles’.

FAST BIKE FRIDAY – CANNONDALE SYSTEMSIX – FAT CREATIONS CUSTOM PAINT JOB

Cannondale Systemsix

For our first Fast Bike Friday of 2021 we’re taking a look at something VERY special! A unique custom build from our road bike department – introducing the Cannondale Systemsix aero road bike complete with a Fat Creations custom paint job!

Cannondale Systemsix

Our customer was looking for something truly unique, with a dream build made up of some of the very best road bike components available combined with a super-aero chassis; the Cannondale Systemsix which is already well-proven on the UCI World Tour fit the bill perfectly.

Cannondale Systemsix

As used by our very own Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli road racing team in the (albeit limited) races that took place in 2020, the team will continue to ride the Systemsix in 2021. We love the feel of this bike which is super-aero, reducing drag and helping you to ride faster for longer. As we all know, small differences in performance can be hard to measure but when your road bike is this aerodynamically efficient you don’t just benefit from enhanced straight-line speed but also gain an advantage in tight sprints, technical descents and even on long climbs.

The Systemsix ticks all of the boxes of what is expected from a modern aero road bike; namely an aerodynamically profiled carbon frame, internal brake & gear cables, neat flat-mount disc brakes and fully-integrated handlebar and stem which features internal cables that run seamlessly into the frame, all helping to make this bike efficient at cutting through the wind.

Cannondale Systemsix

The wear marks on the chainring teeth are a giveaway – this customer has transferred some of their favourite components over to this new custom bike build. The Rotor chainset featuring Rotor Aldhu cranks is combined with Rotor’s INspider spider-integrated power meter. Easy to use and install the INspider gives accurate measurement taking power data from both the left and the right and records power output and cadence amongst other useful data. A solid Rotor outer chainring further ads to the Systemsix’s aerodynamic efficiency.

Cannondale Systemsix

Shimano’s top-tier groupset features on this dream build with the 11-speed Dura Ace Di2 electronic transmission guaranteeing precise, faultless gear changes on every shift. Small details like the K-Edge chain keeper, neatly integrated into the front derailleur mount mean that if our customer was to unship the chain for any reason the chain won’t drop between the chainset and frame, helping to prevent any potential damage to the carbon frame.

Cannondale Systemsix

Stopping duties are handled by Shimano’s excellent flat-mount Dura Ace hydraulic disc brakes providing powerful, easy to modulate braking that is consistent in any weather conditions and on any road surface regardless of whether they’re wet or dry. Thru axles provide a secure junction between wheel and frame, ensuring brake caliper and disc rotor are perfectly aligned.

Cannondale Systemsix

A dream build with an amazing Fat Creations custom paint job and a super-aero frameset needs the ultimate wheelset to finish it off. This Systemsix features a pair of much-sought-after ENVE SES 7.8 Disc carbon fibre wheels to take the aero-efficiency of this custom build off the chart! These wheels have been structurally optimised for use with disc brakes; featuring lightweight and deep-profile carbon rims they dramatically reduce drag and have been designed to accommodate larger volume road tyres, in this case the brilliant Continental Grand Prix 5000.

Cannondale Systemsix

The ultimate wheelset needs to feature the very best hubs available, ENVE have spec’d Chris King hubs which have an undisputed reputation within the industry as high-quality, beautifully machined hubs with smooth sealed bearings that offer almost infinite longevity.

Cannondale Systemsix

If you’re familiar with Chris King hubs you’ll instantly recognise whir of the rear hub’s freewheel. It’s basically an audio-signal to all other cyclists around you, this bike is BLING!

Cannondale Systemsix

This is one HAWT custom build, it’s been great fun building up one of the best aero road bike framesets available  with a selection of the ultimate bicycle components out there. Then there’s that amazing paint job by Fat Creations, with a beautiful fade and colours that will brighten up the dullest of days we love the look of this dream road bike.

FAST (FAT) BIKE FRIDAY – TREK FARLEY 9.6

Trek Farley 9.6 2021

A Fat Bike is for life NOT just for Christmas, or is that puppies? Well, the statement still holds true, but should probably re-worded more specifically to ‘a Fat Bike is for riding everything, not just snow’.

When Fat Bikes first started to permeate into popular cycling culture they were very much billed as bikes that were exclusively for riding on snow or sand, however, what followed was a gradual understanding of the true versatility of the Fat Bike; with riders pushing the boundaries of what was ridable and bike brands refining Fat Bike technology to meet demand. It’s fair to say that spending time on a Fat Bike is a different riding experience, with a slightly different outlook required, but here at our Lake District store we’re fully behind the concept of the Fat Bike, with quite a number of staff owning their own and usually one or two models in store available as rental bikes they’re a really good option for the type of riding conditions encountered here in the Cumbrian fells.

So, to the uninitiated, what are the advantages of riding a Fat Bike? To many people the first sight of a Fat Bike is completely bewildering. The appearance of the super-wide oversized tyres suggest a portly, potentially unwieldly bike that would feel sluggish and hard to handle in most riding conditions, but looks can be VERY deceiving. The large volume, extra-wide tyres provide a really stable platform and give enhanced grip on a wide range of terrain and surfaces. As drivetrain technology has progressed over the years on conventional MTB’s we’ve been able to conquer increasingly steep, technical off-road climbs, with only the grip and surface-area contact of our tyres letting us down until we lose traction or lose balance OR both and have to put a foot down. A Fat Bike’s tyres run with extremely low tyre pressures overcome these issues allowing you to negotiate trails you’d previously deemed un-ridable; similarly coming downhill, you’ll feel that grip is enhanced and control is amplified, particularly on the sort of lose, rocky, marble-runs we have to cope with here in the Lake District Fells.

Part of the reason we keep a Fat Bike available as one of our rental bikes is that they’re great for slightly less confident riders who maybe haven’t previously ridden really demanding, technical and rocky terrain. The low tyre pressures, wide footprint and enhanced cushioning that they provide all help to make for a more predictable ride. In a lot of cases the evolution of the Fat Bike has included a move up from 26 inch wheels to 27.5 inch wheels (a feature of the Trek Farley) and this helps the rolling capacity of the bikes, a larger wheel meaning they will roll over obstacles more easily and will hold their speed more than the 26 inch wheels of other Fat Bikes.

We’ve also seen a rise in popularity for using this type of mountain bike as an adventure bike or ‘bike-packing’ bike. Fully loaded up it’s not unusual to see riders taking their Fat Bikes out onto the trails for multi-day adventures; with the capacity to carry a load and the stability provided by large, wide low pressure tyres as well as a massive spread of low gears a Fat Bike is a great option. The worries of unfamiliar terrain and unknown routes are negated by running such a versatile, user-friendly bike; it’s been likened to Pony Trekking on wheels! OK, so that’s enough of an overview on the benefits of riding a Fat Bike and the sort of riding possibilities they give you as a mountain biker; now let’s take a closer look at the full carbon Trek Farley 9.6 Fat Bike…

The stunning Trek Farley 9.6 full carbon Fat Bike…

Trek Farley 9.6 2021

The Farley 9.6 is Trek’s high-end 27.5” wheeled Fat Bike made from super-light OCLV carbon fibre and features their Stranglehold sliding dropouts to allow you to fine-tune tyre clearance and the wheelbase of the bike – run it long for enhanced stability or shorter for more nimble handling. A rigid carbon fibre Bontrager Haru fork keeps things simple and lightweight up-front and a remote dropper seat post means you can quickly get the saddle out of the way when thins get steep and rowdy.

Super-light OCLV carbon chassis means this thing is light and nimble…

The paint finish on the Farley 9.6 is something to behold! With a subtle, semi-translucent gloss aqua-green finish that reveals some of the carbon fibre weave as you look across the frame and it catches the light. Bang on trend as always Trek have indulged us with a smattering of oil-slick details including on the head-badge of the frame.

It’s the same story up-front with a matching tyre sitting comfortably within the wide-stance Haru carbon fork…

Super-wide 27.5×4.50”Bontrager Barbegazi Team Issue, Tubeless Ready tyres with Inner Strength sidewalls and an aramid bead feature a widely-spaced square-profile tread pattern that provides loads of grip while being efficient at mud-shedding…

The Bontrager Barbegazi Team Issue tyres can be run at extremely low pressures for superb traction…

Trek Farley 9.6 2021

As mentioned earlier, Trek have spec’d 27.5 inch wheels rather than 26 inch wheels sometimes found on other brands of Fat Bike. The rational for this is simple, the larger wheels will roll faster over obstacles at the same time as providing enhanced grip thanks to their slightly larger surface area being in contact with the ground. The Farley’s wheelset features a pair of striking oil-slick-finish, sealed bearing thru-axle hubs with six-bolt disc rotor mounts; the rear hub includes a Rapid Drive 108 freehub body which, as the names suggests, has 108 points of engagement giving nearly instant acceleration with no delay when you step on the pedals.

To keep things light and fast rolling the hubs have been built onto SUNRingle Mulefut 80 SL 32-hole cut-out rims which feature a super-wide low profile rim. As you’ll see from the pictures, Fat Bike rims are cleverly machined to remove any excess material, thus saving weight while ensuring the structural integrity of the rim is not compromised; a tough waterproof rim tape can be seen slightly protruding through the machined out portions, keeping everything air-tight.

Trek Farley 9.6 2021

Trek have spec’d the Farley 9.6 with a carefully selected range of components with a brilliantly simple and functional SRAM GX Eagle 12 speed groupset. A single 30T chainring upfront combined with a huge range of 12 gears on the rear cassette with the smallest cog being 10 teeth and the largest being 52 teeth gives you a really broad range of gears that will help you overcome any obstacle in your way. Even if you’re fully laden with bike-packing bags the super-low 30x52T combination will let you conquer steep, lose climbs without too much trouble.

SRAM’s Eagle groupset means a simple setup with one trigger shifter on the right of the handle bars…

Trek Farley 9.6 2021

Stopping duties are handled by SRAM’s Level TL hydraulic disc brakes with large 160mm rotors to enable you to scrub off speed quickly and control your Fatty regardless of the terrain, the weather or the pitch of your descent.

A close-up of the rear brake reveals Trek’s clever rear brake caliper and Stranglehold adjustable dropout configuration. If you’re planning on adjusting the wheelbase of your Farley 9.6 then obviously the rear brake will need to be repositioned too; there’s no issue doing this with the Strangle-Hold, with the rear disc brake caliper attached to a floating mount which can be adjusted fore and aft before being secured with an allen bolt.

Trek’s Stranglehold droput configuration includes an easily-adjustable brake caliper mount…

Trek Farley 9.6 2021

The setup on the Farley’s handlebars looks clean and simple, with SRAM’s 12-Speed Eagle trigger shifter and Level brake levers. Another nice little styling feature is the Bontrager lock-on handle bar grips with and oil-slick detail.

Oil-slick details are bang-on-trend…

Trek Farley 9.6 2021

Massive tyre clearance means, even when you’re taking on muddy, boggy riding conditions there’s still enough room between frame and tyre to prevent mud build-up…

Trek Farley 9.6 2021

So, who is the Trek Farley 9.6 for? Well, the versatility of this bike means that it would suit quite a number rider types with quite different preferences. If you’re looking for a high-end lightweight Fat Bike that’s capable of fast blasts around your local trails and you’re time-pushed but determined to ride in any conditions and on a wide variety of terrain then this carbon fibre Fatty would suit you. Equally, if you’re planning on going a little further afield, with a well-deserved bike-packing trip planned then the fact that this bike can handle most situations and come out of them with you smiling means it’s a great option too. When you can’t guarantee you know exactly what sort of terrain and riding conditions you’ll encounter during your epic ride then the Farley 9.6 will give you added confidence as you embark on your adventures. Oh, and finally, it goes without saying that if it snows A LOT any time soon then you’ll be able to get out and have some real fun, before posting that all-important smug Instagram post.

This versatile full-carbon fat bike is ready for almost anything…

FAST BIKE FRIDAY – FOCUS IZALCO MAX DISC 8.8

Focus Izalco Max Disc 9.6 2021

This week Fast Bike Friday is looking at the 2021 Focus Izalco Max Disc 8.8 carbon aero road bike and straight off it has to be said it looks absolutely stunning! This German designed, race-ready road bike is super-aero and catches the eye thanks to its minimal, clean lines and aerodynamic silhouette which is somewhat enhanced by Focus’ simple but elegant gloss-burgundy paintjob.

No gimmicks, just a simple, clean and elegant design…

Focus Izalco Max Disc 8.8 2021

The Focus Izalco Max frameset goes well beyond eye-pleasing aesthetics though with some serious science and German engineering behind its development. Focus have struck that magic balance between lightweight and aero with all of the frame’s tube profiles designed and refined after many hours in the wind tunnel. The use of Kamm tail profiles have allowed the engineers to create an aero frame while cutting overall weight.

Tube profiling has been refined to give greater aerodynamic performance…

Focus Izalco Max Disc 8.8 2021

The Izalco Max Disc 8.8 is constructed from super-rigid high-modulus carbon fibre which has helped to create a stiff and responsive frame while keeping weight to a minimum, with a claimed weight of 1040 grams for the frame and only 376 grams for the aero fork.

Rigid high-modulus carbon fibre construction means a stiff, responsive chassis…

Sometimes the smallest details make the biggest difference; a good example of this is the Izalco Max’s carbon seat post design. The Focus designers have developed an aero-profiled D-profile post which kills two birds with one stone, firstly it’s aerodynamically profiled and secondly it’s flattened rear profile has been designed to flex a little giving you added comfort in the saddle. A subtle but really effective tweak to the frame’s geometry adds even more comfort and compliance. To maintain the optimum sitting position Focus have pushed the seat tube forwards so that the effective offset is only 2 mm. This means that you can enjoy the comfort of a seat post with 15 mm offset, without having to forgo an efficient, aero racing sitting position.

Don’t be fooled, while the frame may look racey it’s not at the expense of comfort…

Focus Izalco Max Disc 8.8 2021

The Focus Izalco Max Disc 8.8 comes spec’d with Shimano’s excellent Ultegra 11-Speed mechanical groupset which gives you brilliantly functional, crisp and light gear shifting in every gear selection, even in the heat of the moment while racing. Focus have spec’d a 52T/36T chainset up front combined with an 11-30T cassette to give you a versatile spread of gear ratios that will help you climb efficiently but still be able to find that top speed when you’re strung out on the weekly chaingang.

Focus Izalco Max Disc 8.8 2021

Braking is taken care of with Shimano’s Ultegra R8020 hydraulic disc brake calipers and 160mm disc rotors bringing you powerful, predictable well-modulated braking in all weather conditions; gone are the days when a ride in wet weather meant having to second guess whether or not your rim brakes are going to bite and control your speed on tight downhill turns.

Ultegra R8020 disc brakes bring enhanced control to your ride…

Focus Izalco Max Disc 8.8 2021

With a clean-looking internally-routed front brake hose the front flat-mount Ultegra R8020 hydraulic disc brake looks neat; Focus have developed their own thru-axle system – the R.A.T. (Rapid Axle Technology) Quick-Release system which has cleverly combined the security and stiffness of a typical thru-axle with the speed and efficiency of a traditional quick-release system meaning wheel changes can be done in super-quick time.

The R.A.T. (Rapid Axle Technology) Quick-Release system is fast and efficient to use…

Focus Izalco Max Disc 8.8 2021

The spec of this complete bike reflects Focus’ erm, focus(?!) on not cutting corners with the finishing kit of their bikes; a Prologo Scratch saddle with a proven saddle profile further adds to the overall comfort of this bike.

Focus Izalco Max Disc 8.8 2021

The Focus Izalco Max Disc 8.8 aero road bike features Novatec’s R5 carbon wheelset, which is another great asset to this race-ready machine. This wheelset with an aerodynamic 50mm deep rim-profile makes an excellent wheelset for race day; whether you’re competing in your weekly crit or are taking on a hilly day-long challenge this wheelset hits the desired sweet spot between being lightweight and aero so they really can do it all. The Izalco Max is shod with 25mm Vittoria Rubino Graphene 2.0 tyres giving you good grip and minimal rolling resistance, but if you want to go bigger the Izalco Max can easily take 28mm wide tyres for even more comfort on rough road surfaces.

A fantastic carbon Novatec R5 carbon wheelset comes as standard…

Focus Izalco Max Disc 8.8 2021

If you are looking for a versatile, modern road bike that ticks all the boxes, namely – disc brakes, aero-profiled frame, enhanced comfort, high-performance stiffness and responsiveness, internally-routed cables AND a pair of race-ready wheels then the Focus Izalco Max Disc 8.8 may be for you. But just to reinforce the point, this is not a bike you’ll only want to ride on race day, as previously highlighted this aero road bike is also deceptively comfortable and is more than ready for all-day epic road rides over the hilliest routes you can find.

Comfort and speed in one versatile package…
