Rebike Cumbria x Wheelbase Trade-In : A Huge Success!

Last week, thanks to the donations made by our customers during our Trade-In offer, Wheelbase handed over 100 bikes to Rebike Cumbria. The generosity of our customers is greatly appreciated and the campaign was a huge success. The Trade-In bikes will be refurbished and given a new lease of life for their new owners to enjoy for many more years.

Who are Rebike?

Rebike Carlisle, officially known as Rebike Cumbria Community Interest Company (CIC), is a remarkable initiative dedicated to promoting cycling and fostering community engagement in Carlisle and its surrounding areas.

A Hub for Refurbished Bicycles

At the heart of Rebike’s operations is the collection of unwanted or donated bicycles. These bikes undergo thorough servicing and refurbishment, ensuring they are in excellent condition before being offered for resale. This not only promotes environmental sustainability by reducing waste but also makes affordable bicycles accessible to the community. Children’s bikes are available starting from approximately £40, while adult bikes are priced from around £85. The organization maintains a webshop where much of their stock can be viewed, and their physical location is open to visitors from Tuesday to Saturday, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Empowering Through Community Engagement

Beyond bicycle sales, Rebike is deeply committed to making cycling accessible to everyone, regardless of age, experience, gender, or social background. Their community-focused programs include:

  • Free Learn-to-Ride Sessions: Helping individuals gain confidence on two wheels.

  • Complimentary Bike Checks and Repairs: Ensuring cyclists can ride safely without financial burden.

  • Bicycle Loan Programs: Providing free bike loans to those who may not have immediate access to a bicycle.

  • Guided Social Rides: Organizing traffic-free group rides to encourage social interaction and promote healthy lifestyles.

  • Maintenance Workshops: Offering free classes to teach basic bike maintenance skills, empowering cyclists to take care of their own equipment.

A Journey of Growth and Impact

Since its inception, Rebike has undergone significant growth. Starting in a modest 600 sq ft space on Citadel Parade, the organization expanded to a 2000 sq ft unit under the railway arches below Carlisle Station. In 2011, Rebike was incorporated as Rebike Cumbria Ltd, and by 2022, it transitioned into a Community Interest Company (CIC), reflecting its unwavering commitment to community service.

In 2019, the ‘Rebike Community Cycle Hub’ was established by a group of enthusiastic cyclists aiming to assist newcomers in gaining confidence and learning bike maintenance. This hub promotes healthy living and community engagement through various initiatives, including pop-up bicycle workshops, free bike loans, led bike rides, and educational workshops in schools.
