Learn More About Road Race Bikes

Road race bikes are designed to maximise speed and efficiency on tarmac. They typically combine lightweight frames, responsive handling and a more aerodynamic riding position than endurance road bikes.

Modern race bikes generally fall somewhere between lightweight all-rounders and more aerodynamically focused machines. Some prioritise low weight and climbing performance, while others use aerodynamic frame shapes and deeper components to help maintain speed on flatter and rolling roads.

The best choice depends on where you ride, the type of riding you enjoy and how aggressive a riding position you find comfortable.

What is the difference between a race bike and an endurance road bike?

Race bikes generally use a lower, longer riding position and responsive geometry designed to maximise speed, aerodynamics and handling. They’re ideal for racing, fast group rides and riders who want a performance-focused road bike.

Endurance road bikes typically place the rider in a slightly more upright position and prioritise comfort and stability over longer distances. They may also offer greater tyre clearance and gearing suited to long or hilly rides.

If comfort and long-distance riding are your priorities, explore our Endurance Road Bikes.

Should I choose an aero or lightweight race bike?

A lightweight race bike is a great choice for climbing, acceleration and riding routes with frequent changes of pace. An aero race bike uses aerodynamic frame shapes and components to reduce drag and help maintain speed, particularly on flatter and rolling terrain.

The distinction isn’t as clear-cut as it once was, with many modern race bikes combining low weight with aerodynamic features.

If your riding is dominated by steep climbs, weight may be the priority. For fast racing and flatter routes, aerodynamics become increasingly valuable. For mixed UK riding, a modern all-round race bike can offer an excellent balance of both.

How do I choose the right size road race bike?

Start with the manufacturer’s recommended size for your height, but also consider reach, riding position and how aggressive you want your position to be. Race-bike geometry varies between brands and models, so you shouldn’t assume you’ll always need the same frame size.

Every bike product page at WHEELBASE features our SmartFit sizing tool. Simply enter a few measurements and SmartFit will recommend a suitable size for the bike you’re viewing, using sizing and geometry data provided by the brand.

It’s a great place to start if you’re unsure which frame size to choose, and our team is also available if you’d like further advice.

What tyre width is best for a road race bike?

Most modern road race bikes are designed around wider tyres than previous generations, with approximately 28mm now a popular starting point for fast road riding.

Wider tyres can improve comfort and grip while still offering excellent rolling efficiency, particularly on typical UK road surfaces. Depending on the bike, wheels and available frame clearance, some riders may prefer 30mm or wider tyres for additional comfort and confidence.

Always check the manufacturer’s maximum tyre clearance before changing tyre size.

Are race bikes comfortable for longer rides?

They can be, provided the bike fits you correctly and you’re comfortable with its more performance-focused riding position.

Race bikes generally position the rider lower and more stretched out than endurance bikes. This can improve aerodynamics but may be less comfortable for riders who prefer a relaxed position.

Tyre choice, tyre pressure, saddle setup and bike fit can all make a significant difference to comfort. If long-distance comfort is more important to you than an aggressive race position, an Endurance Road Bike may be the better option.

What gearing should I choose for a race bike?

The right gearing depends on your fitness, terrain and riding style. Modern road race bikes offer a wide range of gearing options, making it possible to combine fast top-end gearing with ratios suitable for steep climbs.

A larger chainring can suit strong riders and flatter, faster riding, while a wider-range cassette or more compact setup can make climbing easier.

Don’t assume that harder gearing automatically makes a bike faster. Having ratios that allow you to maintain an efficient cadence across the roads you actually ride is more important.

Do I need electronic shifting on a race bike?

No, but electronic shifting is increasingly common on performance road race bikes.

Systems such as Shimano Di2 and SRAM AXS provide fast, precise shifting with very little lever effort and can be particularly useful when changing gear under load. Electronic systems also provide a clean cockpit and additional setup options.

Modern mechanical groupsets can still offer excellent shifting performance and may provide better value if electronic shifting isn’t important to you.
