NATIONAL CYCLO-CROSS CHAMPIONSHIPS – RACE REPORT

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Wheelbase are celebrating the hugely successful National Cyclo-Cross Championships which took place over the weekend of 14th/15th January at the popular Westmorland County Showground venue just down the road from Wheelbase HQ in the South Lake District.

National Cyclo-Cross Championships

Big crowds cheered on the racers as they took the mud of Westmorland County Showground.

As event sponsors Wheelbase could not be happier with how the event went; with our own team rider Dave Haygarth and his band of loyal volunteers at the helm the whole weekend of action-packed racing went off without a hitch, despite some epic winter weather in the week leading up to the event and during racing on the Saturday. Happily the sun made a much-welcomed appearance for Sunday’s races, encouraging huge crowds to converge at the most technical parts of the course to witness the U.K.s very best Cyclo-Cross racers compete in some of the toughest racing of the season.

National Cyclo-Cross Championships

International racer Cameron Mason came back to the U.K. to win the National Cyclo-Cross Champions Jersey.

Needless to say, three weeks of almost continuous rain in the lead up to the Championships had a massive impact to the racing conditions, with heavily saturated ground turning into thick mud almost instantly. Just like a water-logged edition of the Glastonbury Festival, albeit without the June temperatures, the competitors, spectators, event organisers and vendors all embraced the conditions and there was a great atmosphere throughout the weekend. As the Wheelbase Bar continued to serve tasty Lakes Brew Co. beers, our resident DJ pumped out some classic Eurotrash Techno tunes and the Belgian Frites stall served up frites & mayo for an authentic Belgian Cyclo-Cross vibe making the National Champs a brilliant end-of-season party.

National Cyclo-Cross Championships

Some spectators really embraced the muddy conditions.

Most of the racing-action on Saturday took place under black clouds with intermittent heavy showers and high winds bringing temperatures down. Savvy racers were using the large bodies of standing water in the lower portion of the fields to their advantage, washing off some of the thicker mud from their bikes as they blasted thorough them. Needless to say the hard-working pit-crews were kept busy, making sure that their riders received a clean bike on every lap in what quickly became a battle against the elements.

National Cyclo-Cross Championships

The mud on course became very sticky and slippery.

While Saturday’s wet weather made spectating a bit of a challenge, the racers benefitted from a course that was more rideable thanks to their ability to cut through the wetter mud and gain more grip in the process. Sunday’s weather flipped the script with settled sunny weather making spectating a joy and encouraging huge crowds for the final two big races of the weekend. Conversely the warmer weather meant that the mud from the day before began to dry out becoming even more sticky and slippery, making racing and bike-handling that more difficult. These conditions resulted in a fair amount of running per lap and rewarded racers who were able to stay as calm, focused and in control as possible. Because of this the large field of competitors quickly became spread out throughout the course meaning that there was always lots of action going on for the large crowds of spectators who continued to shout encouragement and ring their customary cow-bells.

National Cyclocross Championships

Wheelbase were proud sponsors of the National Cyclo-Cross Championships.

Our own Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli Cyclo-Cross team where in action across multiple races over the weekend, with some great results in their respective categories. We were keen to be well-represented in what was being described as our ‘home race’ and being title sponsors of the event it was important that our riders were at the sharp end of the racing.

National Cyclo-Cross Championships

The Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli team were out in force at our ‘Home Championships’

National Cyclo-Cross Championships

Our team had some difficult course conditions to overcome.

Dave Haygarth should be applauded for his efforts, as he not only worked non-stop throughout the week leading up to and then during the event helping ensure the smooth running of the National Champs he still found time to line up and race! Racing in the Vet 50 category Dave rode strongly in what were some of the most challenging conditions of the whole weekend. After racing a full season of National-level and League Cyclo-Cross races Dave was in his element in the mud, using his finely-honed bike-handling skills to take an excellent 17th place.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Not content with simply organising the Champs, Dave Haygarth was racing too, taking on the Vet 50 race.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Dave used his great bike-handling skills to eventually finish in 17th place.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

If he didn’t enjoy himself, course designer Dave Haygarth would only have himself to blame.

Elsewhere, in the U16 Girls category Dave’s daughter Elsie found herself racing in between icy deluges as the cold, wet weather continued throughout the day. With both knees still heavily taped up to support some niggles that have affected her towards the later half of the Cyclo-Cross season Elsie would once again do battle with fellow racers in an age category which is stacked with racing talent and reflects the ever-increasing popularity of this off-road cycling discipline. With some fantastic support from friends and family, both in the pits and behind the course tapes Elsie rode a solid race to eventually finish in 20th place; it’s great to see Elsie continuing to develop as a racer and this full season of competition will stand her in good stead for future seasons as she moves through the age categories.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Elsie Haygarth has had a solid Cyclo-Cross season and signed off in style at the National Championships.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Elsie made short work of the Wheelbase hurdles.

Saturday also saw one of the most important races for us here at Wheelbase; with the Westmorland venue right on our doorstep and a fair few of our team riders based here in the North West of England there were some great opportunities for our local racers to shine at their ‘home race’. Non more so than Lewis Craven who has been with the Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli team for years and has rewarded us with some fantastic results during that time. Lewis has previously held the National Vet 40 title as well as more recently the coveted Vet 40 World Champions jersey; in fact it seems strange to see Lewis in a standard Wheelbase team jersey!

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Would Lewis be swapping his standard Wheelbase jersey for a National Champs jersey?

The National Cyclo-Cross Vet 40 Championship race was an opportunity for Lewis to regain the iconic dark blue National Champs jersey at the end of a season that has seen some really close-fought battles with his racing contemporaries. Throughout the season-long National Trophy Series Craven has consistently been at the sharp end of racing, placing on the podium multiple times but always seeming to miss out on the win. Westmorland presented Lewis with the last chance to take that elusive win at the most important race of the year and in front of a VERY supportive home crowd.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Lewis is captured by our videographer Dave MacFarlane during the race.

The week going into the Championships left Lewis dealing with a heavy cold and time off the bike; far from ideal Lewis showed his experience of competing at this level, remaining calm in the build up and just seeing what he could do on the day. We imagine he would have been secretly rubbing his hands together on the morning of the race though as the sort of difficult conditions that the competitors were dealing with were exactly where Lewis excels.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

The difficult course conditions were much to Lewis Craven’s liking.

With sublime bike-handling skills and an ability to ride smoothly while carrying momentum through the most technical parts of the course Lewis was able to ride efficiently and dose his efforts, delivering the power to accelerate away from his fellow competitors as the race progressed. Rather than an all-out attack Lewis relied on his skill and consistency to slowly gain a gap and then hold it until a very emotional finish which saw his teammates and supporters celebrating this incredibly popular win. One of the most friendly, popular and professional riders on the circuit Lewis was immediately name-checking his sponsors during post-race interviews while we all offered our congratulations. Wheelbase are thrilled to see Lewis back in the National Cyclo-Cross Championship jersey, with this second Champs victory being all the sweeter after a difficult build up to the race.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castello

The relief was palpable; after a difficult build-up to the race Lewis was still able to take the win.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

This win meant that Lewis Craven would be back in the Vet 40 National Champs jersey for another season.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

A week of illness before the race meant Lewis was totally exhausted at the finish line.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Lewis Craven is the Vet 40 National Cyclo-Cross Champion!

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli was also brilliantly represented by Davie Lines in the same Vet 40 Race. Equally talented on and off-road Davie lined up at the Nationals following some stellar results this season which included a fantastic 2nd place and a well-deserved Silver Medal at the UCU World Master Cyclo-Cross Championships earlier in the season. At Westmorland Davie rode another solid race, displaying similar bike-handling abilities to Lewis and making most of the difficult conditions to take a brilliant 7th place for Wheelbase.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Davie Lines signed off another successful ‘cross season with 7th place in the Vet 40 race.

Fast forward to Sunday and spectators & racers were greeted with clear blue skies, some much-welcomed sunshine and a rapidly drying course, however, such was the amount of rain and damage to the course the previous day there was no way that racing conditions were going to be dry and fast regardless of the late appearance from the Sun. With the mud becoming more sticky and some of the steep banks becoming so churned up that they were unrideable in places the final senior Elite race of the Championships was going to be slow-going with plenty of running. Line-choice, superior bike-handling AND a speedy and competent pit-crew were going to make all the difference between racing success and failure. Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli lined up at the start with Giles Drake, Adam Bent, Flynn Gregory and Rory McGuire all representing us in the biggest race of the weekend.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Adam Bent would take an excellent 10th place in the U23 sub-category.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Rory McGuire made his customary fast start in the Seniors race.

Standing at the side of the course, within a packed crowd of enthusiastic spectators we got to witness THE most competitive ‘cross race of the season in an event which pits the U.K.s best racers against a small number of riders who are typically based overseas and racing at international level; those riders return to the U.K. in the hope of taking the coveted National Championship jersey so that they can show it off during a packed season of World Cup Cyclo-Cross racing. This large spread of racing ability soon left racers strung out all over the course meaning there was plenty of action for spectators as smaller groups of competitors became locked into their own personal battles.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Giles Drake was our highest placed rider taking a brilliant 11th place.

The lads from Wheelbase represented us really well at our ‘Home Champs’ with our seasoned campaigner Giles Drake taking a fantastic 11th place, positioned towards the front of the pack at the sharp end of the race. Likewise our two younger riders Adam Bent and Flynn Gregory who are not that long out of the junior ranks performed really well to take 21st and 39th respectively. With both riders still qualifying for the Under 23 sub-category Adam would secure 10th position and Flynn would take 17th to reflect their racing talent and consistency at the end of a long, hard season. Unfortunately Rory McGuire was a DNF; at time of writing we’re unsure what happened, but we know we’ll see this talented rider back at the front of a race very soon.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Flynn Gregory placed 17th in the U23 sub-category of the senior race.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

A HUGE thanks to Dave Haygarth for all of the hard work behind the scenes.

We would like to publicly thank Dave Haygarth and his long list of helpers for the incredible efforts he put into the National Cyclo-Cross Championships at Westmorland, here in the Lake District. Wheelbase are incredibly proud of all of their hard work behind the scenes; Cyclo-Cross came to Cumbria and we had a party! National Cyclo-Cross Championships

The Race Course

With (50m) of elevation per lap it could be described as about averaging for a ‘cross course. Not hilly, not flat. The ascent / descent comes from a combination of:

  • A few run-ups with no chance of riding
  • One run/ride up depending on skills and weather / ground conditions.
  • Cambered slight descents
  • One set of hurdles, 35cm, 5m spaced
  • One flight of steps, stone
  • Two clean, good surface climbs
  • One flyover, scaffolding bridge
  • One fast, good surface, flowy and easy descent (recovery!)
  • Numerous grass sections that are likely to get very heavy going in January.

The land is well-drained but like anywhere, when it gets wet, it gets sticky. That means that the fine stone on some of the hard-surfaces could get pulled into your bike if it’s muddy.

National Cyclo-Cross Championships

The National Cyclo-Cross Championship course promises to deliver action-packed racing throughout the weekend.

NATIONAL TROPHY CYCLO-CROSS ROUND 6 – RACE REPORT

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

The National Trophy Cyclo-Cross series reached its sixth and final round on the first full weekend of January 2023. After a brief interlude over the Christmas period the season-long competition arrived at the popular Cyclopark venue in Kent for two days of unpredictable cyclo-cross racing in what would turn out to be some of the most difficult riding conditions of the series.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

With cold temperatures and plenty of rain, frigid mud dominated the weekend of racing.

Our crack team of Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli Cyclo-Cross racers came together once again to represent us across multiple race categories over the two days. Our team is mainly based in the North West of England and the long trip down to Kent for both our riders and team staff was not to be underestimated; following almost a full month of continuous rain over the majority of the UK they knew they were in for a hard weekend, racing in the muddiest conditions possible. What they didn’t necessarily bargain for was a big drop in temperature, particularly on the Sunday, this would prove to be one of the most significant factors influencing how our racers performed at Round 6 of the National Trophy.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Conditions were a real test of both rider AND bike with pit crews kept busy cleaning bikes on every lap.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli’s Dave Haygarth deserves a special round of applause from everyone here at Wheelbase HQ. As you may know, we’re about to host the final big cyclo-cross race of the year – the National Cyclo-Cross Championships at the Westmorland County Showground in Cumbria. Just down the road from our flagship store in the South Lakes the preparation of the race venue and all of the complex planning of the event behind the scenes has been overseen by Dave and his team of volunteers; with just a week to go until the big event Dave and his daughter Elsie Haygarth still found the energy to load up the van full of bikes and make the long trip down south to race the final round of the Trophy.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Dave Haygarth and his daughter Elsie made the long trip south to Kent for another fun-filled weekend of ‘cross racing.

Dave and Elsie committed to racing every round of the National Trophy Cyclo-Cross series; Saturday would see Dave and Elsie racing in the Vet 50 and Under 16 Girls category respectively, here’s Dave’s account of their races…

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Elsie in action at the Gravesend Cyclopark, racing in the U16 Girls category.

Looking back on the six rounds of the National Trophy series, we have probably had the best six courses imaginable; they all varied so much but each and every one tested rider’s skills in different ways. The final round at the Cyclopark in Gravesend, Kent didn’t disappoint and rounded out the series perfectly.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Dave Haygarth alongside UK cycling legend Nick Craig.

A superb course design meant that there were very few moments where you could take your eye off the ball; the use of this course as a training area for local riders over the last few weeks also meant that several parts of the course were well ridden-in beforehand. Well-established ruts and polished corners made for a really demanding parcours and when the dry and windy conditions turned to rain only 20 minutes before my Vet 50 race things got even more interesting.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

The technical nature of the course was much to Dave’s liking.

With an ongoing knee injury that I’m still trying to work around by reducing my training as well as getting plenty of physiotherapy, I wasn’t too confident about the course in the run-up to my race. This slight apprehension wasn’t eased when I began to see the new and imposing flight of stairs consisting of 47 steps appearing all over my social media feed! To be honest, I’d seriously considered not even making the 250 mile journey, but the love of the sport always takes grip and we went there planning to make the most of it.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

47 Steps! Made Dave’s day a little harder, but the knee held out.

This was the first race of the National Trophy series that I managed to qualify for the front row of the grid, but with a screaming headwind at the start straight a fumbled attempt to clip cleanly into my pedals proved quite fortuitous as I immediately slipped back to 15th position behind the charging riders and out of the wind. Then, just before the course turned onto the rough and rutted mud I was able to come out of the wind and push straight up to 2nd place, which was fantastic for the ego.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Relying on years of ‘cross riding experience Dave Haygarth rode intelligently throughout the race.

My race from there was incredibly clean, given the unpredictable nature of the course. Riders around me, slipped, slid, and generally struggled, pushing the course tapes, and often falling, so I feel like I got away with a trouble-free start and as the faster riders gradually came around me, I managed to settle into sixth or seventh place to fight with Army CC rider Simon Hale.

This is the way it remained for the last part of the race until the final lap when my legs started to fade on some of the bigger banks, forcing me to let a couple of other riders pass me. I eventually crossed the line in 9th place and was really chuffed with another top-10 finish on a course that I was super-enjoyable during every second of racing.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

A fine 9th place made the long journey even more worthwhile.

Elsie’s U16 girls race took place in the early afternoon of Saturday and by then the wind had dried the wet mud enough to make it nastily sticky. Just clipping back in the pedals was taxing; shoes clogged with flint, sand and mud became ‘clods of inconvenience’ making he race even more challenging. Also recovering well from knee problems, Elsie was just happy to make the start of this final round. Technical courses are always her favourite and she went into the Gravesend race with the aim of having fun, testing her bike-handling skills and just seeing where that left her at the end of the race.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Elsie slips and slides her way around the Gravesend Cyclopark.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Despite the taped up knees Elsie was able to make short work of the massive flight of 47 steps.

With a fairly decent start, Elsie immediately encountered traffic chaos as the youth girls race had been booted up the steps on the first lap. She dealt with it well and with a position in the early 20s she slowly improved on the steps each lap, eventually managing to consolidate a top 20 position. Elsie was really happy with 19th place with virtually no knee pain, particularly as there was now just a week to go until the National Cyclo-Cross Championship on home turf.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Another top 20 result gave Elsie Haygarth the confidence she needed going into next weekend’s National Championships.

Lewis Craven made a long trip from the North to race the final round of the series in the Vet 40 category. After another successful race season Lewis was back at the sharp end of the race going up against his usual (friendly) adversaries including series leader Tony Fawcett, Hope Factory Racing’s Paul Oldham and current Vet 40 World Champion Adrian Lansley. With both the technical course and the muddy conditions suiting Lewis he was able to take advantage of conditions to sign off this demanding series of ‘cross races with a fine 2nd place.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

When racing conditions are at their most difficult Lewis Craven shines! His Jedi-like bike-handling skills really coming into play.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Lewis’ seeks out the most available traction as he rides up one of the steep banks.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Foot out, flat out. Lewis drifts his way though the slick course.

As the rain continues to fall and the ground gets more and more sodden, circumstances are looking very promising for Lewis, our mud specialist, as we fast approach the National Cyclo-Cross Championships on the 14th & 15th of January. With his form just where is needs to be at this point in the season we’re excited to see what he can do at our ‘home race’.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Rubbin’ is racing. Lewis and World Vet 40 Champ Adrian Lansley both seek out the same line.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

More podium time for Lewis Craven as he takes 2nd place in the Vet 40 category.

A quick scroll through Man Down Media’s excellent photos will tell you everything you need to know about the conditions that our team were up against when racing re-commenced on the Sunday. It’s probably fair to say that the weather was the fiercest competitor of the day, shaping the outcome of many rider’s races. Warm and wet conditions had dominated the previous week’s weather, but now riders were now suddenly faced with a dramatic drop in temperature as the rain intensified just as our Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli lined up for the final race of the weekend, the men’s senior elite race.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Conditions only got worse on Sunday as temperatures dropped and rain turned to hail.

Representing the team at Round 6 were of four our racers. Giles Drake was back in action looking for another good result after a string of consistent National-level races this year, having only missed one round this season due to commitments on the road as he took on the National Hillclimb Championships where he finished in a fantastic 10th place.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Giles was back in action for what turned out to be one of the hardest races of the season.

Joining Giles was our young U23 rider Flynn Gregory who has had another stellar year mixing it with the seniors and placing highly in all rounds and on a wide mix of course and different racing conditions. For most of 2022 Adam Bent was focused on road racing on the continent where he again tasted success; back in the UK for a shorter ‘cross season than he’s been used to Adam quickly adapted to this more unpredictable racing discipline and has shown himself at the sharp end of the race.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Flynn Gregory has had an impressive season with consistent results and a high placing overall in the U23 sub-category.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Adam has had a shorter season after a long road season on the continent but has slotted straight back into the sharp end of ‘cross racing.

It was good to see Tyla Loftus back on the other side of the tape; after a long season of tirelessly working in the pits, helping to keep our racers riding in some of the most difficult conditions of the year it was his chance to compete against a packed field of racing talent. Tyla works hard behind the scenes at Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli, helping to recruit some of our best riders over recent years and he continues play an important role in the running of the team right throughout the year.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

It was time for Tyla to be on the other side of the tape, leaving pitting duties behind to race instead.

When the starter’s gun went off the large field of racers were immediately into the action with mud, spray and slop instantly rendering almost everyone unrecognizable thanks to a thick coating of freezing cold mud. Despite a good start, Giles would quickly begin to suffer in the difficult conditions as the rain turned to hail; from his description after the race it sounds as if he was on the verge of hypothermia…

It quickly became clear that I was underdressed and when the rain and hail came, I got so cold I couldn’t steer the bike, brake or shift gears. Eventually, as my body began to shut down I crashed hard and ultimately DNFd (did not finish). It was really irritating but I have to put it down to just one of those days where conditions changed drastically and rapidly.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

A very rare off day for Giles as he succumbed to the incredibly cold temperatures and difficult racing conditions.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Giles quickly realised he was under-dressed once the unwelcome hail had arrived.

We’re sure Giles will bounce back ready for next weekend’s National Cyclo-Cross Championship at the Westmorland County Showground in Cumbria where he’ll be keen to impress at what can be described as his ‘local National Champs’.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

It was time to consolidate and recover in time for the ‘BIG one’ next weekend – the National Cyclo-Cross Championships in Cumbria!

Flynn Gregory continued his consistent race, taking an excellent 16th place at the end of this attritional race. This brilliant top 20 finish also saw him take 14th place in the season-long Under-23 sub-category. Adam, still making the best of his shortened ‘cross season was just behind Flynn taking a brilliant 18th place while Tyla rounded our Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli representation with a fine 50th place, picking just about the worst race of the year to stage a comeback to competition!

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Flynn was on form again, taking a fine 16th place which positioned him in 14th overall in the season-long U23 competition.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Adam remained composed in the incredibly difficult racing conditions to cross the line in an excellent 18th place.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Tyla chose the most difficult race of the year to stage a racing comeback but handled the mud really well.

As I’ve mentioned numerous times throughout this report, the team now have their eyes firmly focused on the National Cyclo-Cross Championships taking place on the 14th & 15th of January at the Westmorland County Showground in Cumbria. We may never get the chance again to host our very own National Championships! With Dave Haygarth at the helm we’re looking forward to a brilliantly run event and fantastic weekend of Cyclo-Cross action; it promises to be super-fun for competitors and spectators alike – see you there!

UCI WORLD MASTERS CYCLOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIPS – RACE REPORT

UCI World Masters Cyclocross Championships

DAVIE’S DAY….

The first weekend of December saw the welcome return of the UCI World Masters Cyclocross Championships to Trinity Park, Ipswich in East Suffolk; back for its second successive year this busy weekend gave racers aged 35 and over the chance to pit themselves against a field of international competitors for the glory of becoming a World Masters Cyclocross Champion in their respective age category. With racers ranging from 35 to over 75 years of age the event hosted 3 full days of racing on a popular cyclocross race course which included all the typical sort of features that could play their part in shaping the outcome of each race, including a long sandpit, barriers, tight wooded singletrack and a short staircase run-up, but more on that later.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Every race of the Masters World Cyclocross Championships was stacked with racing talent.

Three members of the Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli cyclocross team travelled to Trinity Park; with Dave Haygarth and Lewis Craven based in the North West of England and Davie Lines up in Scotland the lads made the long trip south with the aim of at least representing the team on the podium and possibly taking the win in their respective races. It’s worth pointing out too, that Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli had just enjoyed a full cyclocross season with their very own World Masters Cyclocross Champion, yes, after getting to wear the coveted World Champs Rainbow Jersey for a year Lewis Craven was going into the Vet 45-49 Men’s race as defending champion.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Lewis Craven has spent a full season racing in the coveted World Champs rainbow jersey.

Our seasoned campaigner and cyclocross devotee Dave Haygarth, who plays an important role off the bike as much as he does on it as a busy race organiser (he’s currently working hard behind the scenes on the National Cyclocross Championships which is taking place on our Wheelbase HQ’s doorstep in the new year), was our first rider to line up in the Vet 50 category. The field of this race was stacked with racing talent including former World Masters Champions Nick Craig and Ian Taylor and Dave lined up with high hopes after a solid season of national-level racing so far; sadly it was not to be, we’ll let Dave take up his story…

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Dave Haygarth gave it everything, but a recent knee injury would massively affect his race.

I‘m disappointed to say that after a long trip I did not have the best of days, but that’s racing. I picked up a small knee injury after the Torbay round of the National Trophy Cyclocross Series and worked hard on nurturing it in the last couple of weeks including taking a weekend off racing in the hope I could make a speedy recovery ready for this big event. I knew it was optimistic, and as it turned out as soon as the gun went I could feel it wasn’t right; there was just no way I could get the required power down through my knees.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Negotiating the barriers was difficult given Dave’s injury.

The sand section needed full on gas for 15 seconds and I had about five seconds of full gas before my knee started killing each lap. The short steps were slow and nasty and the other dismount at the hurdles was exceptionally painful because of the knee. Basically my head dropped after about two laps and I was quite happy to let people pass me and just enjoy the occasion. I finished mid-pack and while I was disappointed at the outcome of my race I had to be philosophical given my circumstances and I was still really happy to be part of such a great event.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Normally Dave loves blasting through the sandpit, but in this case he just couldn’t put the power down.

Next up we had defending World Champion Lewis Craven and Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli teammate Davie Lines in the Vet 45-49 category, another field of racers made up of the great and good of the past 30 years of off-road racing in the U.K. and beyond. A quick read-through of the start list revealed some very familiar names who have continuously won races since the early 1990’s indicating that whoever was going to take the win in this race would be a seasoned campaigner with a rich racing history.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

The Vet 45-49 Men’s category was packed with racing talent.

Dry weather conditions meant that the course was almost completely dry and riding very fast, so the racing was rapid and saw small groups quickly forming; Lewis Craven will tell you he prefers more difficult racing conditions, going well in super-muddy races when he can really take advantage of his Jedi-like bike-handling skills. Despite this fact our defending champ was positioned well at the lead of the race and was enjoying the course charging hard with teammate Davie Lines nearby. Just as he started to formulate his next move Lewis got into difficulty with his shoes and clipless pedals setup; a small stone jamming between them and causing him difficulty in getting in and out.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Disaster strikes for Lewis Craven.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

This untimely fall would cost Lewis his race and the defence of his rainbow jersey.

Just at the wrong moment Lewis could not release his foot as he approached the steps at speed and he took a heavy fall directly into the staircase injuring his knee, hip and ribs in what would prove to be a race-ending injury. As he crawled to the trackside and tried to catch his breath he saw the race slip away from him and with that the hopes of defending his rainbow jersey were gone. It was down to Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli’s Davie Lines to take the race by the scruff of the neck now, strategically placing himself behind Paul Oldham who was dictating the pace as a small group began to chase race leader Adrian Lansley who had already escaped off the front.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Davie Lines was at the sharp end of this fast, frenetic race.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Calling on years of road racing experience Davie was already strategising for the sprint.

Davie is a wile rider with years of bike racing experience gained from competing in road, mountain and cyclocross events. Acting as our captain on the road he’s a font of knowledge when it comes to race tactics and his instincts quickly kicked in as the latter half of the race began to play out in front of him. Riding sparingly he dosed his efforts, putting the power down only where he needed to while counting on his excellent bike-handling skills to keep him out of trouble. Adrian Lansley stayed away for the win but in the chase behind for silver and bronze Davie opened up his sprinting legs early to escape the remaining chasers and take an excellent Silver medal in the Vet 45-49 World Masters Cyclocross Championships!

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Dosing his efforts Davie waited to escape the chasing group just before the line.

Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli

Davie Lines took a fantastic silver medal at the Masters Cyclocross World Championships.

Congratulations to Davie on a fantastic result which gave our Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli team a second successive podium placing following Lewis brilliant win in 2021. A huge thank you to our three racers for making the long trip to East Suffolk, thanks also to all of the team helpers working very hard behind the scenes providing support before, during and after the races. Finally we wish Lewis and Dave all the healing vibes they need for speedy recoveries as we move towards the latter half of the cyclocross season.
