Hot on the heels of our Big Demo Weekend in the Lake District, yet again it was time for the Wheelbase crew and the best brands in the Mountain Bike world to assemble at Hamsterley Forest, ready for an action packed day of riding the latest and greatest mountain bike technology on the super fun trail of the Hamsterley trail centre. Such was on our side once more and following the good wether at the Big Demo Weekend a fe week previous, we were graced again with dusty trails which made for great riding conditions allowing riders to push some amazing bikes to their limits of traction.

With over 100 riders in attendance and enjoying the dry, fast, flowy riding conditions, the representatives from Cube, Merida, Orbea, Trek, Whyte, Yeti were busy all day setting up each machine for every rider, ensuring the best performance was gained from every ride and enabling riders to spend as much time riding the trails as possible whilst conditions were in their prime.

We’d like to thank all of our customers who attended, our fantastic representatives from each bike brand for supplying us with the world’s best bikes and the hard-working guides for getting everyone around the trails safely and with a huge smile on their faces. The Nuroad C:62 has plenty of tyre clearance allowing you fit fit up to 700mm x 45mm tyres, which mean that traction is maintained whilst braking with all the power generated by the SRAM hydraulic brakes. Lower tyre pressures are also attainable with larger volume tyre, ensuring comfort over the long haul.

All of the rider’s power is transferred to the drivetrain thanks to the light, stiff and strong SRAM Rival aluminium crank arms and their partnering, oversized DUB spindle. The 1x set up is super smooth, without the drag and inefficient compromised chainline of conventional 2x systems.

The Newmen Evolution gravel-specific wheels bring rapid acceleration and unrivalled strength to the party making long road sections and ascents a breeze.

With the internal cable routing of the NuRoad C:62 Cube have reduced clutter and maintenance by running cables through the frame, keeping them out of the way of dust and water contamination or damage from abrasion, as well as cleaning up the bike’s appearance.

The Easton Carbon gravel specific finishing kit is a welcome addition, reducing fatigue in the hands, wrists and shoulders by dampening high frequency vibrations all too familiar to gravel riders.

The ‘Advanced Twin Mold’ frame construction process used by Cube utilises two precisely manufactured forms for theC:62® NuRoad frames. The first form is to ensure an accurate layup. The second, inner form keeps every individual fibre precisely where it needs to be while the frame cures. The result is a significantly lighter, stronger frame, with fibre density tailored to anticipated loadings at specific points. Allowing Cube to also tailor the rider characteristics of each frame individually to it’s designated purpose.

Flawless shifting from a Shimano Ultegra Di2 Groupset

Shifting is flawless, and faster than previous Ultegra Di2 iterations, while operating almost silently thanks to Hyperglide+ tooth profiles, meaning that the chainrings and cassette have an improved connection with the chain, essentially improving shifting under load, across the 34t cassette. Aesthetics are sleek, with the semi-wireless system eliminating wires from shifters to derailleurs.

Powerful braking from Shimano Ultegra hydraulic brakes

Braking is equally impressive, and the redesigned Ultegra calipers provide more clearance between rotor and pad, reducing rubbing and the associates noises frequently heard in wet or gritty conditions. Servo Wave levers, have been redesigned for improved ergonomics, speed up the initial travel so pad and rotor meet sooner, creating a more progressive and modulated feel at the lever.

Wide gearing with a 52/36T chainset and 34t Cassette

Adding in a 12th sprocket ensures progression through the gears is smoother. but the real benefit is the 34t cassette and 52/36t chainset providing all the winching capabilities you need to keep you fresh for the efforts on the flat. Spinners are winners!

Clearance for upto 34mm Tyres

The Caledonia frame now accommodates larger volume tyres, upto 34mm. Allowing you to take advantage of a shorter and broader contact patch with the tarmac. Maximising grip from edge to edge of the tyre when leant over and reducing rolling resistance whilst the tyre is upright, not to mention the associated comfort benefits from a larger tyre which is compounded the distance is increased.

Hottest Bikes of the Lake District Demo Weekend

There were some phenomenal bikes available to demo all weekend at the Lake District Demo Weekend. But there were a few that really caught our eye and some which are already firm favourites with our staff. Check out our ‘Hottest Picks’ of bikes from the weekend…

This bike blew us away whenthe Whyte guys rolled up to Wheelbase HQ with a fleet of E-Lyte 150 Works’s for us to blast over to Ambleside and back on via some tasty Lakeland Tech. Fast, light and powerful, the top of the range E-Lyte 150 Works masterfully blends the very best natural mountain bike handling and ride feel with the power and capability of full power electric mountain bikes (eMTBs). Cube AMS Hybrid One44 C:68X TM 400X 2024

We have all grown to love this bike here at Wheelbase and for good reason. If you’ve ever wanted that little extra boost up a climb without worrying about the weight, the AMS Hybrid ONE44 C:68X TM is the bike you’ve been waiting for. You might guess from its elegantly sculpted frame – made from Cube’s premium C:68X® carbon – that it’s something special, and you’d be right.

Bosch’s new SX drive combines with a 400Wh battery, built-in system controller and bar-mounted Mini Remote to deliver up to 55Nm of additional torque via Sram’s GX Eagle Transmission 1×12 electronic gears. A Fox 36 Performance fork and Float X Performance shock deliver progressive mountain-flattening travel. Newmen Evolution SL A.30 wheels are fitted with Schwalbe Magic Mary and Nobby Nic 2.4in tyres, and held in check with a pair of Magura’s powerful MT7 hydraulic disc brakes. Yeti SB160 29 T3 2024

Next up in the weekend’s pick of Hot Bikes is a staff firm favourite, the Yeti SB160. Upholding a time-tested, race-bred ethos that says nothing should hold a rider back from the sheer joy of untethered speed. The SB160 is built off one of the most successful race platforms in EWS history, the sb160 is race bred and honed to be the fastest bike when charging hard in technical terrrain like that found here in the Lake District.

Forget what you know when it comes to suspension kinematics — according to Yeti the clock doesn’t lie and proves more progressive leverage rates aren’t faster! The SB160’s kinematics have been refined for the longer travel of the SB160’s chassis with increased bottom out control while maintaining a relatively linear progression curve. Why a linear curve? Riders experience more predictable damping characteristics throughout the travel. Predictability whether in a competition setting or riding an epic ridgeline can make the difference in success between the tapes or dropping your mates through the singletrack.

The Yeti factory team wanted even more confidence at pace. To achieve this, they refined geometry with little more reach, rebalanced front and rear centres, and size-specific chainstays and seat tube angles. It’s their most confidence inspiring geometry to date and it’s optimised by frame size, ensuring athletes of all sizes and styles are in a position that prioritises speed and efficiency.

Cannondale Moterra Neo SL 2 2024

We also had the pleasure of our friends at Cannondale bringing along their new Moterra Neo SL, another trail eBike that’s high on power and low on weight. Aimed at providing an engaging, nimble ride experience that will tame the tech and find the flow. However packing 85Nm of torque, 600W+ of peak output, and 601Wh of power into a machine weighing as little as 20.6kg /45.4lbs, when it comes to full-power fun and lightweight agility – the Moterra Neo SL in a class of its own! Quite literally… it has more watts per kilo than any other on the market! The lightweight carbon fibre frame features Cannondale’s weight-saving FlexPivot technology which is key to achieving this.

The Moterra Neo SL has four different levels of boost, easily adjustable on the fly, help you choose between maximum range, monstrous power, or your ideal blend of both. Whether mild or wild, your ride will be whatever you want it to be, no more and no less. It’s not just about power and weight, the Moterra SL’s suspension is specially tuned for the kind of high-speed sessions this bike encourages.

WHnit comes to getting back up to the top of the next epic descent and having the most fun on the way down. We are all in agreeance that the Merida eOne-Sixty 875 is the best bike to do it on!
