Cervélo Caledonia-5: Cycling Weekly’s 5 Star Bike

When the Cervélo Caledonia-5 was released in August, we new it would be a hit. We ensured we had good stock early doors and the sales have been strong. It’s no surprise Cycling Weekly heralded the Cal-5 a 5 star bike this week, we are confident our customers would say the same. 4 months on from the release of the bike, we thought we’d offer some thoughts, having heard the feedback from our customers and tested the bike ourselves.

Cervélo Caledonia-5:

Cycling Weekly’s 5 Star Bike for Every Occasion

When it comes to versatile road bikes, few options capture the imagination quite like the Cervélo Caledonia-5. Engineered to balance speed, comfort, and endurance, this bike is designed to handle everything from high-speed road racing to long-distance gravel adventures. Let’s take a look at what makes this bike a standout choice for riders who want it all.

Design and Aesthetics

The Cervélo Caledonia-5 is a visual masterpiece, featuring sleek lines and an aerodynamic profile. Available in several colorways, the bike manages to look both aggressive and refined. The fully integrated cables and minimalistic branding give it a clean, polished appearance that’s as much about function as it is about form.

The aesthetics are only part of the story. Cervélo has paid meticulous attention to details such as frame geometry and material choice. The Caledonia-5 is constructed using Cervélo’s premium carbon layup, ensuring a balance between stiffness and compliance. The end result? A bike that’s not only beautiful but also built to perform.

Performance

At its core, the Caledonia-5 is a performance-oriented road machine. With a geometry that sits somewhere between an endurance bike and a race bike, it offers a riding position that’s both comfortable and efficient. This makes it ideal for a wide range of use cases, from fast-paced club rides to long days in the saddle.

The bike’s aerodynamic design, combined with its lightweight frame, means it can hold its own in high-speed situations. Meanwhile, the disc brakes and generous tyre clearance (up to 35mm) make it a capable performer on rougher roads or even light gravel trails. This is a bike that doesn’t shy away from a challenge, no matter the terrain.

Features

Some standout features of the Cervélo Caledonia-5 include:

Integrated Cable Routing: All cables are routed internally for a clean look and improved aerodynamics.

Generous Tire Clearance: Accommodates tyres up to 35mm, allowing for a smoother ride on various surfaces.

Hidden Fender Mounts: For those who want to turn the Caledonia-5 into a year-round machine, the hidden mounts make adding mudguards seamless.

Lightweight Carbon Frame: The high-quality carbon layup ensures an excellent stiffness-to-weight ratio.

Comfort and Versatility

One of the most impressive aspects of the Caledonia-5 is how it balances comfort with performance. The frame’s compliance helps absorb road vibrations, making it suitable for long rides without sacrificing speed. The option to fit larger tyres further enhances its versatility, allowing riders to tackle gravel roads or cobblestones with confidence.

The bike also includes mounts for extra storage, such as top tube bags, making it a great option for endurance riders or those embarking on bikepacking adventures. (Apidura Racing Series looks particularly good, in our opinion)

Who Is It For?

The Cervélo Caledonia-5 is for riders who refuse to be pigeonholed. Whether you’re a competitive cyclist looking for a fast and reliable bike or a weekend warrior who enjoys mixing road and gravel, this bike has something to offer. Its versatility and performance make it a solid investment for anyone seeking a “do-it-all” machine.

Final Thoughts

The Cervélo Caledonia-5 is more than just a bike—it’s an invitation to explore. With its blend of performance, comfort, and versatility, it’s a bike that’s ready for any occasion. Whether you’re racing, commuting, or adventuring, the Caledonia-5 rises to the challenge, ensuring every ride is as enjoyable as it is memorable.

If you’re in the market for a high-performance road bike that doesn’t shy away from comfort or versatility, the Cervélo Caledonia-5 deserves a spot at the top of your list.

All New Bosch x All New Merida – 2025 eOne Eighty & eOne Sixty Mountain Bikes

The 2025 Merida eONE-SIXTY SL and eONE-EIGHTY series are both high-performance electric mountain bikes, each designed for enduro and all-mountain trails but with distinct specs and builds to suit different riding preferences.

Ahead of todays launch, Wheelbase were invited out to Girona by Merida to see the latest iterations of the eOne Eighty and eOne Sixty SL. Heres what we learnt;

Merida eONE-Sixty SL 2025

The eONE-SIXTY SL is a powerful and versatile eMTB with a lightweight Bosch performance line CX motor and a lightweight 400Wh removable battery, giving excellent range without adding weight. SL – Super Lightweight.

It features a mixed-wheel setup (29-inch front, 27.5-inch rear) for balanced handling. The frame is built on Merida’s CF4 Carbon offering 160mm of rear suspension travel with a 160mm Rockshox Lyric fork. This model also includes Merida’s adjustable AGILOMETER dropper post to customize fit for stability or agility based on riding style. Ideal for technical trails, the eONE-SIXTY SL includes Maxxis Assegai tires, a choice of Shimano & Sram drivetrains, and four-piston hydraulic brakes, providing a well-rounded setup for intense trail performance. With the base model being on 1kg heavier than the 10k model it’s heavily spec’d across the range.

The range topping eOne-Sixty SL 10K is loaded with the best equipment available; a full fat spec for enduro riding out of the box, not a stripped down spec to reach a weight target. Its progressive geometry offers enduro focused handling with the perfect combination of stability, climbing prowess and manoeuvrability. Add the punchy 55Nm of torque from the Bosch Performance Line SX drive unit and the eOne-Sixty SL offers active riders the perfect balance between human powered handling and eMTB assistance.

If you’re the type of rider who likes to pedal hard and use the assistance for maximum fun on the trail the eOne-Sixty SL is the bike for you. It represents a new breed of e-mountain bike, combining the poise of an unassisted bike with the power of a Bosch SX drive unit to help you ride further and faster.

With a lightweight full carbon frame, 160mm of well balanced travel and a build that blends hard hitting performance with low weight, it blurs the line between conventional and assisted riding.

Assistance is courtesy of the latest compact Bosch Performance Line SX motor with 55Nm and a fully integrated 400 Wh battery, a 250Wh range extender can be purchased separately. Approx overall weight 19.5kg.

Merida eONE-EIGHTY 2025

For riders looking for a robust all-mountain eMTB, the eONE-EIGHTY is equipped with Bosch’s Performance Line CX motor and an 800Wh battery. With this model, you get excellent torque and battery life, especially for longer climbs and rugged descents. The eONE-EIGHTY‘s aluminum frame is also durable and offered in multiple specs. It has 160mm of rear suspension travel and uses components like Shimano Cues or SRAM GX depending on the model level, plus Maxxis tires for rugged terrain. This series is heavier and optimized for maximum power rather than agility, making it ideal for long-range rides in steep and demanding conditions.

The eOne-Eighty 900 leads the way for the eOne Eighty Series. It combines a hard hitting 180mm travel aluminium frame with a powerful Bosch CX drive unit, an 800Wh battery and some top notch kit. The RockShox Zeb Ultimate fork and Vivid Air rear shock are capable of chewing through rock gardens leaving you hungry for more and the proven DT Swiss HX 1700 wheelset will shrug off hits all day long. Running a mullet set up means this bike has the agility to dance as well as destroy; our Agilometer system allows you to choose your size according to your riding style.

The eOne-Eighty is for the heavy hitters, bike park senders and big mountain brawlers. It’s ready to ride the biggest lines and burliest tracks and you can say goodbye to waiting in the uplift queue because it can rip and repeat all day long thanks to a big 800Wh battery and Bosch CX power. It’s Merida’s longest travel e-bike ever, with 180mm of suspension at either end on a robust aluminium frame. Add coil shock compatibility, mullet only setup plus a whole host of other features and getting rowdy is where the eOne-Eighty starts, not finishes.

It’s also Merida’s first e-MTB to use the Bosch Performance Line CX drive unit, offering powerful assistance with 85Nm on tap. There’s a serious amount of range on offer too, thanks to the new 800Wh battery and the option to add a 250Wh Bosch range extender. You can easily remove the battery for off-bike charging or replacement on a really big ride.

It’s rated Category 5 (bike park and downhill approved), so you can get stuck into as many bike park laps or downhill tracks as you like. Approx overall weight 26kg

Trek Madone Interstellar. It’s out of this world.

WORLDS COLLIDE

If you’re passionate about cycling and performance, you’ve likely heard of the Trek Madone—one of the most iconic names in the world of road bikes. As we head into 2025, Trek has once again pushed the boundaries with their Madone Interstellar edition, designed to redefine what’s possible in aero-road cycling.

The 2025 Trek Madone Interstellar isn’t just an upgrade—it’s a reinvention. Combining cutting-edge aerodynamics, space-age materials, and next-gen technology, this bike is built for the rider who seeks the pinnacle of speed, style, and precision.

With a sleek, futuristic design that draws inspiration from the stars, the Interstellar lives up to its name. From its deep space-like paint job to the integrated tech features, the Madone Interstellar promises to be a head-turner on every road.

Advanced Materials: Ultra-Light Yet Incredibly Strong

Trek’s OCLV 800 Series Carbon frame has been reimagined for the Interstellar edition. It’s lighter, stiffer, and stronger, allowing the bike to remain agile while maintaining superior comfort during long rides. The IsoSpeed Decoupler system has also been enhanced to improve vertical compliance without sacrificing speed, allowing riders to enjoy a smoother ride over rough terrain.

Aero-Optimized Components

From the frame to the cockpit, everything about the Madone Interstellar screams aerodynamics. The integrated handlebar and stem system further reduces drag, while the specially designed deep-profile Bontrager Aeolus wheels ensure maximum speed through any wind conditions.

New for 2025, Trek has also incorporated hidden brake calipers to give the bike a cleaner, sleeker appearance while improving airflow over the bike’s surface.

Tech-Infused Performance

The Madone Interstellar takes cycling technology to the next level. Equipped with Trek’s all-new Project One+ system, riders can fully customise their bike’s geometry, components, and design for a truly personalised experience.

Additionally, the bike is fully integrated with wireless shifting via the SRAM Red eTap AXS groupset, offering fast, precise, and seamless shifting without the need for cables. The integrated power meter tracks every watt of your output, ensuring that riders can monitor their performance and make real-time adjustments.

A New Era of Riding Comfort

For 2025, Trek has completely revamped the IsoSpeed system, further separating the seat tube from the top tube to allow for even more compliance. Whether you’re racing or cruising, this innovation ensures a smoother, more comfortable ride even on the toughest roads.

Sustainability Focus

In response to growing concerns about sustainability, the 2025 Madone Interstellar is built with eco-conscious manufacturing techniques. Trek has committed to using more sustainable materials and production methods, reducing waste while still delivering high-performance bikes.

The Future of Speed, Today

Whether you’re a competitive racer or an avid road cyclist, the 2025 Trek Madone Interstellar offers an unparalleled combination of speed, performance, and style. It’s more than just a bike; it’s a glimpse into the future of cycling.

With its stunning design, ultra-advanced technology, and top-tier components, the Madone Interstellar is set to become the new gold standard in aero-road bikes.

So, are you ready to leave Earth behind and explore new limits of speed? The Trek Madone Interstellar 2025 is here, and it’s poised to take you to the stars.

Trek Procaliber Carbon Gen 3 Joins The Start Line For 2025

Procaliber Carbon Gen 3 is rolling to the start line with a new frame that maintains Procaliber’s unique advantage of fatigue-fighting compliance and loses weight by replacing IsoSpeed with IsoBow – the culmination of months of test lab and real-world research to find the right blend of low weight, lateral stiffness, and vertical compliance.

What’s new?

1. IsoBow
2. More travel (120mm)
3. Updated geometry
4. More TYRE CLEARANCE
5. Floating Brake Mount

The smoothest speed on singletrack

The new Procaliber Carbon frame is about 200g lighter than the previous generation, thanks to IsoBow. This carefully engineered frame flex makes new Procaliber simpler and lighter without giving up the benefits of seated compliance. In blind back-to-back testing on the trail, riders couldn’t tell a difference in comfort from the previous generation, and lab testing backed it up. IsoBow gives XC riders the unmatched fatigue-fighting comfort Procaliber is known for, but with a lighter, simpler frame.

More travel for faster rides

Gen 3 Procaliber Carbon comes with a 120mm fork that makes it easier to hold your line through the rough stuff, which saves both mental and physical energy.

More confidence = more speed

Longer reach and a slacker head tube angle make new Procaliber feel more trustworthy on descents. Calmer handling increases your confidence and makes you faster.

Floating Brake Mount

Floating between the stays, the brake mount keeps braking forces from hindering seatstay flex. In other words, not having a brake mount on the seatstay allows it to flex more freely, so you get more control.

Big wheels ready for big tires

New Procaliber uses the fastest-rolling 29˝ wheels on all sizes, and now it can run up to 2.4˝ tires for extra grip and control on rougher trails.

Whether you’re an XC racer, hardtail purist, or flat-bar gravel rider, you’ll love the low weight, high value, and energy-saving compliance of the new Procaliber Carbon.

Enter The Struggle Hill Climb 2024 | Sponsored By Wheelbase

The Struggle Is Real

The UK National Hill Climb Championships is coming to the Lake District on Sunday the 22nd of September, pitting riders against each other on one of the most infamous climbs in the Lakes! The Struggle, local to our Wheelbase Headquarters, strikes fear into the hearts of road cyclists who are familiar with its steep slopes and unforgiving length as it rises out of the picturesque town of Ambleside.

So what can our competitors expect? Here’s a brief summary of the Struggle climb…

The Struggle hill climb ramps straight up from Ambleside, with no chance for competitors to ease in before they immediately hit the 18-20% gradients and the lung-busting effort begins. It’s very easy to go too deep too soon here, breathing so hard that you go into anaerobic threshold and never really recover for the remaining length of the climb.

After negotiating these steep lower slopes, which are hemmed in with dry stone walls, the odd tree and a series of tight bends, the terrain opens out in front of you and the climb becomes a little more forgiving with gradients shallowing to around 8-10%. It’s hard to manage your rhythm here as you encounter a series of false flats with small portions of descent thrown in which have you questioning your pacing strategy for the overall climb.

There’s a reason that this climb has been named ‘The Struggle’. As the elevation increases and you glance upwards you’ll see the very top of the climb ramping up dramatically before you for the final 200-300 metres. You’ll need to dig deep for one final lung-busting effort up the remaining 20% gradients featuring two difficult hairpins and a more unpredictable road surface.

The only redeeming feature of this final kick to the top will be the large crowds of supporters at the roadside, shouting encouragement and ringing their cow bells as they will you on to the finish line where the pain will finally cease and the inevitable wave of relief will wash over you as you begin to recover and wait to find out your time and overall position in the race.

The Struggle – Fast Facts…

  • Total Elevation: 403m
  • Maximum Gradient : 24%
  • Total Distance : 2.67 miles / 4.8 km
  • Avg Grade : 8.2%

Enter The Struggle Hill Climb

If you think you’ve got what it takes to challenge for the top spot in your category, or if you fancy challenging yourself regardless…

You can enter the event here.

We’ve made a short course preview for you to see what you’re getting yourself into!

Video by Badger Productions Ltd

The atmosphere on The Struggle is always fantastic and spectators are welcome and encouraged to join the fun at the side of the road.

Event organiser Jack Talbot has organised the local Struggle Hill Climb race for the past few years, with our very own Andy Cunningham from our Wheelbase Yorkshire store taking the men’s win in 2022. This year he’s teamed up with the RTTC (Road Time Trials Council) to host the biggest hill climb of the season and just like in other years the event will be raising important funds for the Great North Air Ambulance who saved Jack’s life in 2017

We Hope To See You There!

Exploring the World of Topeak

Built For Safety | Built For Adventure | Built For Travel | Built For Precision

If you’re into cycling, you’ve probably heard of Topeak. But if you haven’t, or you’re just getting into the world of bikes, let us introduce you to a brand that could easily become your best friend on the road. Topeak has been around for a while, and they’ve earned a reputation for making some of the most reliable, innovative, and downright useful cycling gear out there. Whether you’re a hardcore road cyclist, a mountain biking enthusiast, or just someone who enjoys a casual ride around town, Topeak has something for you.

A Brief History of Topeak

Let’s start with a little background. Topeak has been in the game for over 30 years, and during that time, they’ve built a brand that’s synonymous with quality and innovation. Their mission has always been pretty straightforward: create tools and accessories that make cycling better. It’s more than fair to say they have succeeded.

What started as a small company with a few essential tools has grown into a global brand with a wide range of products. From multi-tools to pumps, bags, racks, and lights, Topeak covers pretty much all the bases when it comes to cycling gear. They’ve also been recognised with numerous awards over the years, which just goes to show how well-respected they are in the cycling community.

Why Topeak?

So, why should you consider Topeak when shopping for cycling gear? Here are a few reasons:

Innovation: Topeak is all about pushing the boundaries. They’re not just making gear that works; they’re making gear that works better than anything else on the market. For example, their JoeBlow pump series has set the standard for floor pumps. With features like an easy-to-read gauge, a stable base, and a durable design, it’s no wonder these pumps are a favourite among cyclists.

Quality: When you buy something from Topeak, you know it’s going to last. Their products are built to withstand the rigors of regular use, whether you’re tackling rough mountain trails or cruising through city streets. They use high-quality materials and put their products through rigorous testing to ensure they’re up to the task.

Range: Whatever you need, there’s a good chance Topeak makes it. Need a compact multi-tool to carry with you on rides? They’ve got you covered. Looking for a sturdy rack to carry your gear on a bikepacking trip? Check. Want a set of lights that’ll keep you visible during night rides? Yep, they do that too.

User-Friendly Design: Topeak products are designed with cyclists in mind. Their gear is easy to use, even when you’re in a hurry. For example, their MTX TrunkBag series features a quick-mount system that lets you attach and detach the bag in seconds—perfect for when you’re on the go.

Must-Have Topeak Products

If you’re looking to add some Topeak gear to your collection, here are a few products that we highly recommend:

Topeak Mini 9 Multi-Tool: This is a super compact multi-tool that’s perfect for carrying with you on any ride. It’s got nine essential tools, including Allen wrenches, a Phillips screwdriver, and a tyre lever. It’s lightweight, durable, and incredibly handy.

Topeak MTX TrunkBag DX: If you’re planning longer rides, you’ll need somewhere to stash your gear. The MTX TrunkBag DX is a great option. It offers plenty of storage space, with expandable panniers for extra room, and it’s compatible with Topeak’s QuickTrack system for easy mounting.

Topeak Bento Pack: A top tube bag and phone case 2-in-1 design, featuring a transparent protective film that allows you to operate your phone while it’s inside the bag. The second compartment of the bag features dividers that allow you to easily organize and store small items such as debit cards, loose change, keys, and other personal belongings.

Topeak Pocket Rocket Pump: A compact high pressure mini pump which easily pumps up to 160psi. It’s machine cut with a sleek aluminium barrel. A durable and lightweight pump loved by road cyclists far and wide.

Topeak Elementa Seat Bag: This ultra compact seat bag is hidden under that saddle with hook and loop fastening strap to carry inner tube and tyre levers for a safe and secure ride. It has built-in anti-slip fabric that prevents the bag from swinging around whilst riding. A popular item in all 4 of the sizes that it comes in.

Topeak Hexus X Multi Tool: Based on the award winning Hexus II. The Hexus X features all of the tools needed to repair a modern road or mountain bike in a compact folding tool. A large part of it’s success is down to the built in tyre levers, chain tool and pin breaker.

Final Thoughts

Topeak is one of those brands that once you start using their products, you wonder how you ever got by without them. They’re reliable, thoughtfully designed, and they just make your life as a cyclist easier. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or just starting out, we’d definitely recommend checking out what Topeak has to offer. Chances are, you’ll find something that makes your next ride even better.

Happy cycling! ?‍♂️

Summer Cycling Shorts & Tights

Lightweight Fabrics with Sweat Wicking Technology

Summer cycling shorts are essential for comfort and performance during warm-weather rides. Typically they are made from lightweight, breathable, and moisture-wicking materials to keep you cool and dry. As with all cycling shorts they will still feature a padded chamois to cushion and protect against saddle sores during long rides. The fit can be snug and aerodynamic, reducing drag while offering excellent freedom of movement. Elastic grippers or silicone bands at the leg openings prevent the shorts from riding up, ensuring they stay in place. For the trails, the fit will often be baggier, allowing for even more airflow which is particularly useful at slower speeds. Some designs may include UV protection, flat seams to minimize chafing, and reflective details for added safety during early morning or evening rides.

Brand Feature : Ortlieb

Ortlieb has long been a revered name in the world of cycling luggage, known for its commitment to quality, durability, and innovation. For cyclists who value reliability on long-distance tours, daily commutes, or adventurous off-road excursions, Ortlieb stands out as a top choice.

A Brief History of Ortlieb

The brand’s journey began in the early 1980s when founder Hartmut Ortlieb embarked on a cycling trip across southern England. Frustrated by the lack of reliable waterproof panniers, Ortlieb crafted his own from truck tarpaulin. This humble beginning paved the way for the development of a line of cycling luggage that has since become synonymous with quality and waterproof reliability. Today, Ortlieb is headquartered in Germany, and its products are still made there, maintaining a commitment to sustainability and quality craftsmanship.

What sets Ortlieb apart from other brands is its dedication to producing waterproof gear. Each product is meticulously crafted to withstand the most challenging weather conditions, ensuring that your belongings stay dry no matter what. The secret behind this waterproof performance lies in the materials and construction methods used. Ortlieb employs high-frequency welding techniques that fuse materials together without seams, creating an impenetrable barrier against water. This method is far superior to traditional stitching, which can allow water to seep through over time. The result is a range of products that are not just water-resistant but fully waterproof, capable of withstanding torrential rain, river crossings, and even submersion.

Another hallmark of Ortlieb luggage is its durability. The materials used in their products are incredibly tough, often made from abrasion-resistant fabrics like PS36C and PD620, which offer both flexibility and strength. Whether you are navigating rough trails, city streets, or airport terminals, Ortlieb bags are designed to withstand the rigors of constant use. This robustness means that while Ortlieb products might come with a higher initial price tag, they are an investment that will last for years, often outliving cheaper alternatives by a significant margin.

Ortlieb’s product range is extensive, catering to a variety of cycling needs. Their panniers, such as the Back-Roller Classic and the Front-Roller Classic, are iconic in the cycling community, known for their spacious interiors, reliable mounting systems, and, of course, waterproof design. These panniers are easy to attach and detach from bike racks, making them convenient for both long tours and daily commutes. Additionally, Ortlieb offers handlebar bags, frame bags, and saddlebags, each designed with the same attention to detail and commitment to quality. The handlebar bags, for example, provide easy access to essentials like maps, phones, or snacks, all while ensuring these items remain protected from the elements.

One of the standout features of Ortlieb luggage is the user-friendly design. The brand understands that cyclists need gear that is not only tough but also practical. Most Ortlieb bags feature roll-top closures, which provide an airtight seal that is easy to open and close. Many products also include reflective patches for increased visibility, an essential safety feature for cycling in low-light conditions. The mounting systems used in their panniers and other bags are intuitive and secure, ensuring that your luggage stays firmly in place even on bumpy rides.

In recent years, Ortlieb has embraced innovation, integrating modern features into its designs. For instance, some of their newer models include features like USB charging ports, which can be powered by a dynamo hub, allowing cyclists to charge their devices on the go. This blend of traditional durability with modern conveniences ensures that Ortlieb remains relevant in a rapidly changing world.

Overall, Ortlieb cycling luggage is more than just a collection of bags—it’s a trusted companion for cyclists around the globe. Whether you’re embarking on a cross-country tour, commuting in the rain, or just looking for a reliable way to carry your gear, Ortlieb offers a solution that combines waterproof reliability, exceptional durability, and thoughtful design. For those who take their cycling seriously, investing in Ortlieb luggage is a decision that pays off in the long run, providing peace of mind and dependability on every ride.
