WHEELBASE BIG DEMO WEEKEND LAKE DISTRICT 2024

Wheelbase Lake District are celebrating yet another fantastic two days of demo riding following our hugely successful Big Demo Weekend 2024!

Last weekend saw us kicking off a busy year of events with the our Big Demo Weekend 2024. With fingers crossed all week we were graced with dry weather and even slightly dusty trails, of which there’s photogrpahic evidence below! As usual our favourite bike brands made the long trip to the Lake District with a fleet of their top tier models for demo and very quickly the event village quickly took shape with TREK, Yeti, Whyte, Cannondale, Merida and Cube all setting up their pits and priming their respective fleets of demo mountain bikes ready for a weekend of riding. This year they were joined by Fox clothing, Smith protection and Burgtec who had shoes, helmets and pedals all available for testing.

The big demo weekend was again a chance for riders to get a feel for the latest tech and shred on some of the most exciting new mountain bikes and eMTBs from the world’s leading brands. Each group ride was guided by fully-qualified, certified mountain bike guides from the Cycle Active team. Our customers got to take their dream bikes out onto some of the most iconic trails in the south Lake District before heading back to Wheelbase HQ for refreshments and a quick bike change before heading out again for more fun!

We’d like to thank all of our customers who attended, our fantastic bike brands for supplying us with the world’s best bikes and the hard-working guides for getting everyone around the trails safely and with a huge smile on their faces. We can’t wait to do it all again next year. If for some reason you couldn’t quite make it this year, don’t worry… pencil it in your diary for a similar date next year and we’ll see you there.

We had two amazing photographers capturing all the fun of the weekend. Visit the links below to check out all that went down from two days of riding the best trails of South Lakeland…

But if you can’t quite wait that long, fear not. Wheelbase Northeast also be hosting a mountain bike demo day in Hamsterley Forest on the 11th of May, where again we’ll have a huge fleet of eMTBs and Mountain Bikes from Yeti, Merida, Orbea, Cube, Trek and Whyte. You can now book your dream ride online, selecting each bike that you want to test ride during each time-slot available, with rides going out at 9.30am, 11.00pm, 12.30pm, 2.00pm and 3.30pm. All demo rides need to be booked in advance through our booking website, linked below. Demo bikes are £10.00 to book per ride.

Wheelbase Big Demo Weekend 2024 Event Report

Even with dry conditions, there was still opportunity for the odd splash!

Our registration team were busy all day signing riders into the event from all over the country.

The event had professional MTB guides on hand to showcase the best trail of South Lakeland to our demo riders.

It was smiles all round as riders jumped from one awesome demo bike to the next.

All our brands had experts on hand to achieve an optimum set up on their bikes for each rider .

The bikes had very little time to rest, but each brand expert ensured they were fine tuned ready for the next session.

Sunshine meant everyone was eager to hit some prime trail conditions.

The Cannondale Moterra was a sure fire hit all weekend, check out our “Hot Bikes from the Weekend’ feature below, to find out why.

There were many demo routes to choose from, each featuring some amazing trails.

Yep… that’s a dusty trail!

And some blue sky too!

Everyone had a ‘wheelie’ good time (sorry!)

Our riders still managed to find the dirt…

Which meant the bike wash was a hive of activity as usual.

Our bike wash team are a dab hand at turning around a filthy bike in record time.

Burgtec had their amazing Penthouse pedals for testing and plenty of their shiny bling to catch your eye.

Fox also had their Union Shoes available to demo.

Want to know all the about the tech and development of each bike? Merida’s Andy Mee was in attendance with a wealth of knowledge on their range.

With many riders opting for multiple demos on the day. It was a case of a quick refuel and pedal swap before heading back out for another hot lap.

Smith also brought along their latest sunglasses alongside their range of protection and with an amazing forecast, for possibly the first time this year, riders were able to put them to the test.

Hot Bikes of the Weekend

There were some phenomenal bikes available to demo all weekend. But there were a few that really caught our eye and some which are already firm favourites with our staff. Check out our ‘Hottest Picks’ of bikes from the weekend…

Cube AMS Hybrid One44 C:68X TM 400X 2024

We have all grown to love this bike here at Wheelbase and for good reason. If you’ve ever wanted that little extra boost up a climb without worrying about the weight, the AMS Hybrid ONE44 C:68X TM is the bike you’ve been waiting for. You might guess from its elegantly sculpted frame – made from Cube’s premium C:68X® carbon – that it’s something special, and you’d be right.

Bosch’s new SX drive combines with a 400Wh battery, built-in system controller and bar-mounted Mini Remote to deliver up to 55Nm of additional torque via Sram’s GX Eagle Transmission 1×12 electronic gears. A Fox 36 Performance fork and Float X Performance shock deliver progressive mountain-flattening travel. Newmen Evolution SL A.30 wheels are fitted with Schwalbe Magic Mary and Nobby Nic 2.4in tyres, and held in check with a pair of Magura’s powerful MT7 hydraulic disc brakes. And if you thought all this adds up to blistering pace, you’re not wrong!

Spec Highlights

  • Fox 36 Float Performance GRIP, 3-Position w/ Micro Adjust, Tapered, 15x110mm, 140mm
  • Fox Float X Performance, 210x55mm, Adjustable LSR w/ 2-Pos- Lever
  • Newmen Evolution SL A.30 Wheelset witted with Schwalbe Magic Mary, Super Trail, Addix Soft, Kevlar, 2.4 tyres
  • Bosch Drive Unit Performance SX (55Nm) Cruise (250 Watt), Smart System
  • Sram GX Eagle AXS Transmission 12-Speed drivetrain
  • Magura MT7 hydraulic disc brakes

Yeti SB160 29 T3 2024

Next up in the weekend’s pick of Hot Bikes is a staff firm favourite, the Yeti SB160. Upholding a time-tested, race-bred ethos that says nothing should hold a rider back from the sheer joy of untethered speed. The SB160 is built off one of the most successful race platforms in EWS history, the sb160 is race bred and honed to be the fastest bike when charging hard in technical terrrain like that found here in the Lake District.

Forget what you know when it comes to suspension kinematics — according to Yeti the clock doesn’t lie and proves more progressive leverage rates aren’t faster! The SB160’s kinematics have been refined for the longer travel of the SB160’s chassis with increased bottom out control while maintaining a relatively linear progression curve. Why a linear curve? Riders experience more predictable damping characteristics throughout the travel. Predictability whether in a competition setting or riding an epic ridgeline can make the difference in success between the tapes or dropping your mates through the singletrack.

The Yeti factory team wanted even more confidence at pace. To achieve this, they refined geometry with little more reach, rebalanced front and rear centres, and size-specific chainstays and seat tube angles. It’s their most confidence inspiring geometry to date and it’s optimised by frame size, ensuring athletes of all sizes and styles are in a position that prioritises speed and efficiency.

Spec Highlights

  • TURQ Series Carbon Fibre Frame with Switch Infinity Suspension, Threaded BB, Fully enclosed internal cable routing, Sealed Enduro Max pivot bearings.
  • Premium Fox suspension – Fox Factory 38 Grip2 170mm fork and Fox Factory X2 Shock
  • Raceface ARC Wheelset with Maxxis Assegai and Minion DHR EX+ tyres
  • Burgtec finishing kit and Fox Factory Transfer dropper post.
  • Reliable, smooth shifting from a SRAM X0 AXS Eagle groupset
  • Extremely powerful and superbly modulated SRAM Code RSC 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes

Cannondale Moterra Neo SL 2 2024

We also had the pleasure of our friends at Cannondale bringing along their new Moterra Neo SL, another trail eBike that’s high on power and low on weight. Aimed at providing an engaging, nimble ride experience that will tame the tech and find the flow. However packing 85Nm of torque, 600W+ of peak output, and 601Wh of power into a machine weighing as little as 20.6kg /45.4lbs, when it comes to full-power fun and lightweight agility – the Moterra Neo SL in a class of its own! Quite literally… it has more watts per kilo than any other on the market! The lightweight carbon fibre frame features Cannondale’s weight-saving FlexPivot technology which is key to achieving this.

The Moterra Neo SL has four different levels of boost, easily adjustable on the fly, help you choose between maximum range, monstrous power, or your ideal blend of both. Whether mild or wild, your ride will be whatever you want it to be, no more and no less. It’s not just about power and weight, the Moterra SL’s suspension is specially tuned for the kind of high-speed sessions this bike encourages.

The burly FlexPivot stays are also at the heart of it’s suspension design, acting as a Horst pivot, it creates a true four-bar system, that’s been dialled for incredible traction, confident braking, and a playful feel that just begs to be pushed harder.

Spec Highlights

  • Light and durable, full carbon, 150mm travel FlexPivot frame with Proportional Response suspension kinematics
  • Premium Fox suspension – 160mm Performance Float 36 fork & Performance Elite Float X rear shock
  • Reliable, smooth shifting, Shimano XT/Deore 12-speed w/ e*thirteen e*spec Plus cranks
  • Powerful, dependable Shimano Deore 6120 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes
  • Cannondale-tuned Shimano EP801 motor & custom, high-energy-density 601Wh internal battery

The all new Aspero is here… Welcome to the world of speed gravel!

Welcome to the world of speed gravel!

Cervelo may not have made the first gravel bike, but they definitely made the fastest gravel bike in 2019 with the introduction of the first Áspero, which took gravel riders across the world by storm, heralding a “new era of speed in gravel.” It was gravel, but Cervelo-style, taking all their knowledge of designing and manufacturing the fastest road bikes and applying that to the world of dust, dirt and fast adventures.

Since then, gravel bikes have grown, fragmented, and started to look a lot like the road and mountain bikes that spawned them, with suspension forks, bolt-ons for…everything, and ever-increasing tire widths. The new Áspero remains true to those early, simpler days of gravel, but with some improvements—a threaded BB shell, neater cable routing, and a UDH-compatible derailleur hanger for those who want to use SRAM’s Transmission drivetrains. But in true Cervelo style… IT’S FASTER!!

So how have they done this? To start with they shaved off three watts worth of frontal drag in the redesign process. Then they dropped the seat stays to give a bit more compliance out back, and reduced front-end stiffness slightly to make the last hours of a long race or the final miles of that epic adventure less painful and fatigue inducing . Between those dropped seatstays, Cervelo added in a bit more clearance for mud, too. It’s a lot of seemingly small improvements, but they add up to a lot. The result is a bike that feels a lot like the original Aspero, but is faster, more comfortable, and more versatile.

New Features

● Lowered standover height

● ST36 Semi-integrated front end – D-Shaped steerer

● Engineered compliance – Lower dropped seat stays for comfort

● Threaded T47-A bottom bracket

● Dropped both the chainstays for improved chainring clearance

● Slimmed downtube profile for compliance

Geometry built to race!

397mm reach – Greater stability in downhill conditions by moving center of gravity back from steering axis

72° head tube angle  – A steep head tube paired with a longer top tube and a shorter stem, results in reduced toe overlap and a more stable handling in technical terrain

425mm chainstays  – Increased chainstay length to improve stability and increase clearance for mud and chainrings. Longer wheelbase for improved mud clearance and chainring clearance

Design Highlights

Threaded T47-A bottom bracket

Asymmetrical threaded bottom bracket is easier to service and maintain for the home mechanic, whilst the oversized BB shell increases surface area, which improves structural stiffness and turns watts into KPH! The longer shell increases stiffness and stability high load cases, such as when turning.

Easiliy Adjustable Front End

Áspero shares the same bearing dimensions as R5, Soloist, R5-CX, and Caledonia, which means you can use any combination of bearing caps and stems. Want a super-racy, fully-

internal look? Grab the ST31 and HB13 from R5.

UDH

SRAM made everyone want to step on their derailleurs when they introduced the Transmission mountain bike drivetrains in 2023. It seems unnecessary, no matter who made your derailleur, but Áspero uses the Universal Derailleur Hanger (UDH) standard in case you want to try.

Trailmixer Dropout – Maximum Versatility

The new Aspero carries the same adjustable fork dropout as. the previous model with an adjustable ‘flip chip’ which can be set in either a rearward or forward setting to tweak handling characteristics to bias the steering towards faster handling or increased stability. The forward position offers decreased trail, which equates to faster handling;  best suited for 700c wheels. The rearward position offers increased trail which results in an increase in stability which, optimally suited for 650b.

In Conclusion

  • The new Áspero is a fast, versatile, and multi surface race bike
  • Updated slimmer profile
  • Increased tire, and chainring clearance
  • Clean integration for accessories
  • 650b wheel size compatible
  • Adjustable trail for consistent handling performance
  • Accessible price points

The Cube NuRoad Hybrid – The Adventure Starts when the Tarmac Stops

Cube have just launched the all new Cube NuRoad Hybrid. The lightest and and most versatile Gravel eBike they were capable of building. Providing you with all the assistance and battery range to explore new, endless horizons without limit.

Wheelbase are stocking three models of the NuRoad, all built around Bosch’s lightweight Performance SX drive unit. Bosch’s lightest and most compact drive unit, providing all the power the rider would ever need at a minimal weight penalty. The SX drive unit is powered by Bosch’s CompactTube 400 Battery, delivering 400 watt hours at a featherweight 2kg.

The new frame is also PowerMore ready, having the capability to carry a +250Wh battery booster pack, meaning the only limit to you next gravel adventure is now the battery on your GPS!

The Cube NuRoad Hybrid Features:

Bosch CompactTube 400 Battery

Slim, integrated, compact and delivering 400 watt hours at a weight of only around 2 kilos, it’s a real energy powerhouse: The CompactTube 400 with innovative battery cell technology offers the highest energy density of all Bosch eBike batteries. This makes the extra-lightweight battery the ideal choice for a minimalist eGravel bike, such as the NuRoad, maintaining a nimble almost ‘analog’ feel in terms of bike handling characteristics due to it’s lightweight, whilst having the sleek appearance of a conventional bike.

Bosch Performance SX Drive Unit

With the NuRoad’s Power unit, the Bosch SX, muscle power and electric support work in conjunction and deliver top performance exactly when you need it. Aimed at rider looking for a more engaging and rewarding ride experience, the Performance SX is an excellent option for riders who want to push themselves a little more physically either on short sharp commutes or those looking to ride father and deeper into the backcountry without limitations. The Performance SX motor requires a slightly higher cadence to fully develop its power, but supports you willingly once it gets there.

C:62’s carbon Frameset

Each new NuRoad built around Cube’s premium C:62 Carbon Fibre. It really is a case of form meeting function in the elegant shape of the Nuroad Hybrid C:62’s carbon frame. Aesthetically it’s stunning, with a clean profile and organic curves. But Cube haven’t forgotten practicality, like incorporating clearance for tyres up to 50mm even with mudguards fitted. Or carrier mounting points at the rear and on the full carbon fork, for maximum bikepacking versatility. The real magic is in the carbon construction of the C:62 frame. With slightly less resin and  a denser carbon weave the frame has been optimised for stiffness where it’s required and compliance where it’s needed. SO you can be sure of rock solid power transfer from You legs and the drive unit through the chainstays into the wheel and onto the tarmac. Combined with all the vertical compliance you need in the seat stays and seat post to make those longer adventures a pleasure not a chore.

The carbon monocoque has the Bosch drive system’s control unit incorporated into the top tube, with a mini handlebar remote, and the frame is PowerMore-ready for a +250Wh battery booster pack. The seat clamp is hidden, there’s a direct mount lightweight chain guide, a flat mount kickstand interface, Boost rear end and UDH derailleur hanger. It certainly looks like Cube have ticked all the boxes. So which model will it be…

Cube Nuroad Hybrid C:62 SLT 400X 2024 – £6,499

For the gravel-riding perfectionist, the NuRoad Hybrid C:62 SLT takes things to the next level. We sweated every detail to create the best-equipped, lightest and most versatile gravel hybrid we could build. From the new Bosch SX drive unit to the C:62® carbon frame and electronic Sram Transmission, it’s ready for adventure.

Reserve 34/37 carbon wheels – Further, Faster, For Longer, For Less with 40% Off RRP

Engineered to take you Further, Faster and For Longer.

Reserve are renown for their expertise in designing the best composite rims and constructing the most optimum Mountain Bike wheelsets on the market. In recent years Reserve have built upon their own knowledge of manufacturing a superbly compliant and durable wheel and collaborated with Cervélo when looking to develop, test and manufacture the most optimum Road Bike wheelset.

This partnership which utilises Cervélo’s understanding of how to develop an aerodynamic advantage and Reserve’s ability to construct compliance, strength and stiffness into a wheel has resulted in the ultimate road riding wheelset range!

The Unfair Advantage… Turbulant Aero Technology

The partnership between Cervélo and Reserve saw the introduction of ‘Turbulent Aero Technology’. A technology that accurately replicates the kind of wind conditions you experience day in and day out on your typical rides, but in a wind tunnel. For two years, the Reserve engineers travelled the US, mapping different types of wind conditions, and using the data to replicate real world conditions from shifting winds, changes in wind direction to alternating velocities to develop the fastest and most stable road wheelset available.

Learn more about Reserve’s ‘Turbulent Aero Technology’ here:

Developed and Tested on the World Stage

Perhaps the biggest step in the development of Reserve Road wheels has been as a result of their partnership with undoubtedly the best race team in the Pro Tour peloton. With athletes such as Jonas Vingegaard and Wout van Aert providing essential developmental feedback on Turbulent Aero Technology at the highest levels of competition, allowing the engineers to fine tune carbon construction and rim profiles for the perfect balance of comfort, efficiency and aerodynamics.

Reserve Make Rims and Build Wheels.

Reserve believe building the wheel is just as important as manufacturing the rim, and each wheel goes through a thorough human and machine-aided inspection before it gets put in the box. This process and inspection is the first and most important step in offering a lifetime warranty.

Lifetime Warranty

Reserve stands behind the wheels they make, if you break a wheel, they’ll send you a new one to keep you going. Even if you reverse over it with your car, they’ll arrange a low-cost crash replacement ASAP. This Reserve rider support is in effect for the lifetime of the wheel for the original owner, offering huge peace of mind.

Everyone at Reserve is a rider and they know that missing a ride is a huge disappointment, and missing a race can mean throwing away months of hard work, so they’ll do everything they can to ensure that never happens as a result of one of their wheels.

Reserve 34|37 Wheelset – The wheelset for everything you do on your road bike

The Reserve 34/37 is the wheelset for everything you ride on your road bike, designed to find that perfect balance between weight, stability and aerodynamics. It benefits from a wider, shallower front mixed with a narrower, taller rear wheel.

Developed in the wind tunnel and proven on the tarmac with professional race teams, the 34|37 provides quick acceleration and predictable handling. And with all the lateral stiffness and lightweight that comes with a Reserve the 34|37 offers outstanding performance when climbing.

There are no weight limits, no tire limitations, and can be set up tubeless or with tubes. The mixed profile front and rear setup of the 34|37 provides for maximum stability, lowest weight and optimized aerodynamics.

Key Features of the Reserve 34|37 Wheelset

Internally Reinforced

The Reserve 34|37 wheel set uses internally reinforced spoke holes to strengthen the area where the rim sees the most force, around the spoke nipple. This provides for improved strength without adding unnecessary weight.

No Fuss

The 34|37 is designed to be your no fuss climbing wheelset. There are no weight limits, no tire limitations, and can be set up tubeless or with tubes.

Mixed Profile

The mixed profile front and rear setup of the 34|37 provides for maximum stability, lowest weight and optimized aerodynamics.

Shimano Deore Crankset. With plenty of stiffness, the Deore crankset provides great power transfer and a top mounted chain guide keeps everything in check when the trail gets rowdy.

Dropper as standard. WIth a bike this fast and capable, a dropper is a must. The ZFS-5 comes equipped with the superb One Up Components V2 dropper.
