Chris’s Ride Review

I am a huge fan of my trail bike (160mm/142mm) and couldn’t wait to ride this new super-lightweight platform and see how it compared to something a little bigger.

I thought this bike was going to feel and handle like an XC bike. Having spent a few days riding it across all terrain from bikepark to high alpine – it has that responsive XC bike feel on flat/climbing sections where maintaining speed is key. Pumping and aggressive cornering is highly rewarded, the bike responds giving you huge amounts of speed through sections where you want to go faster.

When you point it downhill and open the taps, it feels like a trail bike. What was most surprising about this bike was the amount of grip. Speaking to the engineers behind the bike, they learnt a lot from the Spark over the years, and it’s one of Scott’s best-selling bikes for a reason. The DC utilises a low pivot point, with all the moving parts, strength and carbon layup focused into one single area, they are able to make this bike insanely light, as the rest of the bike needs very little material to keep its strength. While this is the first thing you’ll notice about the Spark, the weight. In my opinion the weight is the secondary benefit, and grip is the main benefit. What exactly causes it, I’ve no idea. Whether it’s the flexstay moving in the final 50% of the bike’s travel or the low pivot point allowing the wheels to yaw, some kind of magic is at work with the rear end of this bike. The bike comes specced with Maxxis Aspen EXO on the rear and a Forekaster on the front. While suitable for the bike’s intended use case, I do not associate this tyre combo with unlimited grip. Fast rolling yes, but grip? I set off fairly steady feeling out the bike, but by the end of the first lap –  I was comfortable picking high lines and less grippy lines whenever I wanted. Credit to the engineers at Scott for this magic ride feel.

SRAM Motive’s are the perfect choice for this bike, keeping that weight low while providing plenty of stopping power. My first time riding them will not be my last!

If climbing all day, the bike’s weight will also be a huge advantage – coupled with Flight Attendant this is a FAST bike, and covered up a lack of aerobic capacity on my end. Grip, reward for pumping and aggression and a climb-all-day feel is a hell of a combination.

Cable Routing

2 options available: run it as it comes with the cables routed through the headset for the cleanest silhouette or if that’s putting you off, the rectangular Scott badge comes off and is replaced by another cover which the cables can run through the frame. Nice.

 

Flexstays

A word that has always sounded like a weakness, proves itself in mountain biking yet again on the Spark DC. Grip, lots of grip! It negates the need for a pivot point on the chainstay which both keeps the weight down and the helps the back end delivers grip through the off camber and corners. The handling is 10/10.

Yeti MT | Riding the Perfect UK Trail Bike

We headed out for a test ride on the brand new Yeti MT. Conditions were very slick, wet and loads of fun. If you’re looking for a one bike does-it-all, you’re in the right place.

Riding the Yeti MT

The T-Series carbon has a lovely ride feel to it, and backs up the premium price point instantly. It’s takes out a lot of vibrations and noise from the bike when you’re riding the jank. The carbon frame is reinforced with Vectran® liquid crystal polymer fibres. Vectran is used in the Mars Rover, no joke! Combine this with Yeti’s undeniable build quality and you have yourself a frame fit for kings. More importantly, it’s absolutely stunning! The seat tube angle is nice and steep, keeping you in a all-day riding position and it climbs really well. While the Switch Infinity link used on Yeti’s of the past was innovative and provided an amazing platform, it was never the best for the UK and all the grit and grime that comes with winter riding. The Sixfininty design gets rid of the need for the extra Kashima, and gives the frame designers a little more wiggle room. The Fox Float shock is custom tuned so just keep an eye on your pressures, it may run slightly different to what you’re used to. It’s a lively ride-feel. You are rewarding for pushing power through the pedals or pumping/jumping into transitions, which is what you want from a trail bike!

DH National Champs ’26 | Revolution Bike Park Delivers

Revolution Bike Park provided the goods over the weekend, with a hugely stacked field, blown up corners and 2 podiums for the team with all round results. Can’t beat it!

Story of the Race

With world cup riders back from international duty and ready to take the National Champs jersey home with them, the elite field was full of heavy hitters. Fresh off a world cup win Jordan Williams took the top step for the elite men, closely followed by Matt Walker and Joe Breeden. Our man Sam Conroy put down a formidable run for 8th gaining momentum throughout his run. Tom ‘Bradford Bruni’ Campana slots into 20th with buckets of pace through the first split.

Emily Carrick-Anderson who joined the team this season has gone from strength to strength. With worthy adversaries in Phoebe Gale and Hattie Harnden taking the 1st and 2nd step, Emily takes home a bronze medal and a dead-eye champagne spray on Hattie.

Chris Whitfield must have tired legs from climbing so many podiums, taking home 3rd in vet 50 behind Will Longden and Steve Peat all while imparting his limitless wisdom into the younger riders.

Who’s Who?

An overview of two new bikes from Whyte, the Sythe and the Syphon. Replacing the popular outgoing models the T140 and T160, Whyte have created two alloy do-it-all bikes at a brilliant price point.

Both bikes share the same excellent alloy frame platform – the key distinction is really about riding intent. The Sythe’s extra travel (30mm up front, 25mm rear) and aggressive Magic Mary tyres signal it’s built to go fast downhill with minimal compromise, while the Syphon’s shorter travel and Albert tyres lean more towards all-day trail efficiency with still-capable descending. Sythe: What We Like

The Sythe is Whyte’s offering to the gravity-hungry crowd. Built for enduro racers, big mountain regulars, and anyone who measures a good day by how fast they came down – not how far they climbed up. It’s a big, capable bike that doesn’t apologise for what it is.

Up front you get 170mm of Whyte custom-tuned suspension travel, with the option of Marzocchi or RockShox depending on your spec choice. Out back, a commanding 160mm keeps things planted when the terrain gets rough. That’s not trail geometry – that’s a bike built to eat chunky tech.

The mullet wheel setup is very welcome. The big front wheel rolls over obstacles with authority while the smaller rear keeps things snappy and responsive in tight corners. For riders on M, L or XL frames, there’s even the option to run a full 29-inch setup should you prefer – a nice bit of flexibility to evolve as you do.

Schwalbe Magic Mary Radials wrap those wheels, and frankly it’s bang on for this kind of bike. Aggressive, grippy, and confidence-inspiring when you’re pushing the limits on a steep descent.

Syphon: What We like

Where the Sythe leans into descending performance, the Syphon is a more rounded proposition – aimed squarely at trail riders who want genuine all-round capability without sacrificing too much in either direction.

The suspension package is where the character change is clearest: 140mm up front via a RockShox Pike Base fork, and 135mm out back with a RockShox Deluxe Select RT rear shock. Still plush enough to handle technical terrain with composure, but light enough to reward a pedalling rider who wants to cover ground efficiently.

Wheels are full 29-inch on medium frames and above – the right call for a trail-focused machine where rollover speed and stability matter. Smaller riders on the S size get the mullet setup, which keeps the handling lively without compromising reach or standover. Schwalbe Albert Radials throughout – a tyre with plenty of grip in varied conditions but far less rolling resistance than the Magic Mary on the Sythe.

The Syphon arrives in a single spec level – Syphon S – offered in a choice of two colours. Keeping the range focused like this is smart: it simplifies the buying decision and concentrates Whyte’s component budget where it matters most.

 

What They Share

Both bikes are built on a 6061 hydroformed T6 multi-butted alloy frame – the same platform, fettled to suit each bike’s purpose. For riders who actually ride their bikes hard and aren’t precious about paint, this is the right choice.

Proportional sizing is another shared strength. Rather than simply scaling one frame geometry up and down, Whyte build each size with adjusted proportions so that the fit, reach and handling feel consistent regardless of whether you’re on a small or an extra-large. It’s a detail that separates the serious manufacturers from the rest, and it’s welcome at this price point. Geometry adjustment also comes as standard on both, giving riders more control over how the bike sits and handles across different terrain.

The 10-52t cassette range means you’re covered whether you’re hauling yourself up a Lakeland slog or pinning it across the Tweed Valley. Stopping duties are handled by SRAM Maven Base 4-piston brakes with 200mm rotors front and rear — plenty of bite and great heat management for long descents.

 

 

A Few Clever Touches

Santa Cruz have built in a proper Glovebox storage compartment in the downtube — big enough for a tube, a snack, and a lightweight jacket for when the weather does what British weather does. The geometry is size-specific too, so whether you’re on a small or a large, you get the same balanced, confidence-inspiring ride. There’s also a flip chip on the rear shock mount if you want to tweak things between snappy and stable.

 

The Verdict

The Megatower 2 C 90 is as close to a do-it-all enduro weapon as it gets — rowdy enough for bike park laps, capable enough for full enduro race days, and surprisingly good at getting itself back up the hill. At £4,199 it’s an absolute steal.

 

Choose Your Fighter: Full Face or Trail Lid? Both?

Having just headed out on a road trip around Scotland, Chris our Graphic Designer & Content Guy shared a van with 3 other riders. Covering 4000m of climbing over the trip and riding bikepark style jump lines at Glenlivet, the trail lid alone can sometimes feel inadequate for this mix of riding types but the bulk of 4 riders bringing full-faces – is just too much.

Welcome the Targon. a really simple latch mechanism (aptly named the Speedlatch), removes the chin bar and turns a full face into a trail lid in seconds and removes clutter from the car/van on race weekends or road trips.

 

The Speed Latch System: Conversion Without the Faff

The headline feature is the patented Speed Latch System. On many convertible helmets, detaching and reattaching the chin bar is enough of a nuisance that riders end up just leaving it in one position. Abus have tackled this head-on (so to speak) with a no-tools-required mechanism. It really is simple and quick.

 

Comfort

We took the Targon out in the winter for a full day at the Golfie. Trying both configurations when riding the different speed of trails. I found the Targon the feel comfortable in both setups, but more importantly, felt purposeful in both configurations. It’s downhill rated, and it feels like it. The dial on the back of the helmet fine-tunes the feel to suit, quickly loosen on climbs for some airflow and tighten before a lap of Mega Track. Confidence inspiring and comfortable at the same time. I did find the chinbar to be slightly tight when putting the full face setup on, however I didn’t try adjusting any pads, which I’m sure would have solved my issue.

 

Who Is It For?

The Targon makes most sense for riders who mix up their riding between mellower trail days and more committing descents — enduro riders, bike park visitors, those heading on a mountain bike holiday where conditions are unpredictable, and anyone who’s ever turned up in an open-face lid and wished they’d brought the full-face. It’s also a sensible choice for riders who travel with their bike and want one versatile helmet rather than two.

If you’re a dedicated downhill racer after the lightest, most focused full-face on the market, a dedicated DH lid may still be your best bet. But for the vast majority of UK riders who spend their time somewhere in the middle ground, the Targon is a very well-executed option.

Bosch Performance Line SX Test Ride: Review

Wheelbase Downhill Team rider Sam Conroy fresh off the back of his British Downhill Series Win, took to the Lake District’s trails to get to grips with this bike. As we were filming a video of the bike, Sam was having to push up the hill to reset A LOT.
